Avocent do them. We've got one with dual DVI connectors and 4 USB ports + sound. It did cost a packet but means we can control our 3d projection setup (hence the dual monitors) remotely. HBJB

Exactly. We expressed an interest in removing ourselves at one point but were told that all sorts of funding would be withheld and that we'd still have to pay for the service anyway since the LA had signed a contract on behalf of all schools (not that they asked us for opinions before spending our money for us). As a foundation school we 'should' have the ability to govern our own budgets but with this they have us over a barrel. HBJB

I just use this: c:\windows\system32\cscript prnqctl.vbs -x -s [i][b]servername[/b][/i] -p "[i][b]Printer/Queue Name[/i][/b]" With the prnqctl.vbs file (attached). I put it/them in a batch file and run it as a sceduled job or whenever I need it. HBJB prnqctl.zip

... also RM are trialling outbound filtering at the moment so any site hosted by you (inside the SWGfL) will be subject to filtering. This means that your intranet/website/VLE may have pages blocked if the filter deems it undesirable. HBJB

Man alive - they cost a fortune. I could probably have gone up to £1,000 but £4 -5K is out of the question. As it happens the little sod chewed though both fibre patches but only one of them actually looked damaged. I've got it running now but it's chewed through the feed to the wireless controller and a few other patch leads as well so I'm busy replacing those at the moment. I completed my 'full map' in the summer so I know the route of everything at the moment. Thanks for the response(s) HBJB

OK so not the conventional mouse problem but a furry rodent one. Got in this morning to be bombarded with 'the network's down' and 'I cant logon' type messages. After a few moments tracking the problem down I find a fibre lead in a cabinet that's been munched on by a mouse or squirrel. This luckily, was a patch in a cabinet so I replaced it with a spare. Still no network to ¼ of the school! On further inspection more cables were chewed through and a mains lead to one of the switches was down to the live cores (it’s a wonder I didn’t get electrocuted when I was delving in the back of the cabinet to check things). I suspect that a fibre in the ceiling has been eaten somewhere but I can’t track it down. Now to the actual point of my post. Does anyone have any recommendations for a fibre tester that I can use to find out where the problem lies? I’d like to get one urgently and I’d like it to also test Cat5/5e/6 etc preferably telling me the length of the runs and where any problems are. Thanks HBJB

I've got laptops here that use the Atom processor. The units are fine with just XP & Office on it but when you load them up with programmes they chug massively. Do these suffer from the same issues under load? I'm interested in possibly doing 2 -3 rooms with low energy kit but I need it to be powerful enough to run all of our software and also stuff we'll get in the next three years. HBJB

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a H2G2 purist and the only good version for me is the radio series (including the newer ones). I hated the TV series and only tollerated the film because DNA's friend Stephen Fry was the book (although Trillian was easier on the eyes than squeeky voiced Sandra Dickenson). The 12" vinyl remake of the radio series was OK though. It goes without saying that I love the books DNA wrote and have them all (H2G2, Last Chance to See, Meaning of Liff (2) and the Dirk Gently ones etc) and was seriously upset to not get any more DG episodes although I hear that a film is on the cards there as well. I think of Nero come with a bcakup tool. I've never used it myself so I can't say for sure but I assume you can select which files to backup and that it would automaticly do the disc filling bit for you. HBJB

We along with a few other professions have a very negative bias to our jobs. People only notice when things don't work and never for the 99.99% of time when they're working fine. People say that the IT is never working properly because they've had to report two faults in the past year. We're invisible when things work! Occasionally staff will come in and say thanks for sorting something/helping/staying behind for two hours to get it fixed etc but those moments are rare. HBJB

If we have our own filtering system and restrict who has access to to the resources surely that's enough to satisfy the RBC. I can't track any documents down about what hoops we need to jump through to have a failsafe route to the internet. I find it a bit ironic that they seem to want your backup connection to be from the same provider that would most likely be down at the same time. Surely a backup connection must be from someone else. HBJB
