Cost of living crisis 2022 - what have you cut back on?
nicholab replied to Ditto's topic in General Chat
It really worth getting a digital programmable thermostat it seems the last thing anyone bothers about in their home. Does anyone have their own OBD2 dongle for their car/motorbike and have any software they recommend? -

Also now I am checking the tyre pressure more regularly as I seen the difference it makes in fuel economy. I also set a limit of £50 pounds fill for both cars. This helps your mind set I got to fill up again that means I driven 250miles. Also your not paying to drive fuel round. -
Had anyone used VIVITEK I notice a lot of schools had android units when going round for my sons open days?

Also can you move over to MS whiteboard or Onenote as the primary software? I very interested how cheap screens now seem to be. The issue was always software you get a cheap screen and your not licensed for the software you use on other boards.

There a massive cost issue should you hang £3.5k on the wall if not all teacher have laptops? At some stage there needs to be a compromise for cost purposes.

Is there any MIS for secondary schools that comes close to SIMS
nicholab replied to JamesParker's topic in MIS Systems
It depends on the SLT sometimes they need to think it's their idea as no one could know what staff need as well as them. Even thought sometime they give their staff systems that are like doing your job with you hands tied behind your back. I once saw an MIS review that only looked at going back to SIMS from Bromcom and I knew it was a fait accompli. We should have stayed with Bromcom and sorted the issues. One the issue was that the Bromcom server was onsite not a service which would have had upgrades managed and the server did not have enough RAM it was too processor heavy. I think cloud MIS are like electronic hand breaks in cars and trying to do a hill start with one they are the future and there is no going back. -

What I noticed with usability is having worked at a Bromcom school none of the specialist areas had gone for training. I am talking Exams Office and Timetabler had not done the training and said SIMS was better when that what they had had training on in the past. Training is a key part of usability, have you main user base been trained how to use it in an every day contexted? You then need to make sure power user keep there hand in and get the right training and reference materials. The biggest issue being is that MIS system are a closed shop it very hard to get you hand on reference material unless you have the right access to a support contract. It one of the key school system but there never seem to be time for training in using it. -

The biggest issue is one member of SLT will be a SIMS addict and have the ear of the Head. If you can get round this and have a proper look at the market you will be doing well. Benefits are the platform and software are managed by the product provider. Your most valuable data is then on different infrastructure to your local network. Some thing like timetabling is often the sticking point it was easier in SIMS. There almost needs be some tough love it a better complete product so get on and change. -
Having worked with this setup it great until a machine does not renew it certificate and then can’t get on the network. The said key person then can’t work before a fix is applied. I think the question is is it worth adding this layer of security and complexity to the network is it going to stop you doing more critical changes to security? May be it should be in your plan but lower down the list than MFA. My question would be if your network is a zero trust architecture is it needed?

Cost of living crisis 2022 - what have you cut back on?

Another area that I guessing would cause up set is how often the good lady visits the beauticians, hairdressers and/or nail salon. My wife is a beautician and I heard about the wads of cash handed over after a 3 hour’s of treatments for one customer. Also the same for us men the hairdressers/barber that can be £18. -

Is anyone thinking of getting rid of their cleaner and getting a gadget to make up for it? -

I did a 7 day switch a few years ago and it worked fine. All DD transferred fine and employers payroll switched over. Wife’s sister transferred money to old account and it found it way to new account. -

I want to know hat handsets people are getting for these deals as the price seems to have gone through the roof on handsets? On Energy: Also with energy Martin Lewis said you can be charged for usage on DD not averaged bill. You can also dispute a DD amount if it unreasonable. -

Change Broadband supplier if you can, you get full fibre for £25!! Also getting a PIV (positive input ventilation) helps as it reduces humidity of the building so your not heating water. The walls will also feel warmer. -
I have just locked my PC and it starts face scanning to unlock.
-
I am in IT sometimes I want to check it locked. May be a windows mind set.
-
I did have the XR for work and I found it stupid bug and the Face ID was annoying. How did you cope with it during covid? I don’t want to use a pin in public after hearing what happened to someone in this weeks money box with their banking apps. Also how did this work for you during covid?
-
Why did apple get rid of Touch ID to me it seems so natural? How do you check your phone is locked if looking at it unlocks it? I use Face ID on a PC and that works well.
-
This was a package from a travel agent so I think building my own might be worth it.

It depends on your budget if hanging £3.5k on the wall works that fine. But a industrial tv, cast device and laptop should be less. If you looking at 60-100 classrooms per school that a lot of money.

Does anyone know if staying in the park is much better than a normal hotel?

My wife wants to go before our son gets much older I wish there was a holiday that split the time between Disney and Paris? I just worried it cost a fortune and will not be a relaxing holiday we are talking £4.5k for a week for 3 persons? I mean for that kind of Money I could have an exciting holiday. Please can someone explain how you can spend 5 days in Disneyland Paris? When Paris is on your doorstep and more exciting. I don’t understand how you can take so much time in a Theme park? I been to Thorpe Park, Chesington, Oakwood, Chesington and Legoland I only spent a day there and that was enough I tiring enough. I also struggle that we might go to France and not even see Paris when it just down the road. I am not really in to the fake Disney world

I find this very strange that this was my view of the future direction of IWB a few years ago. Laptop with touch screen and cast to a large screen.
