Indeed - it's hard to win! You can't get the experience if you're getting the qualifications, and you can't get the qualifications as easily if you're getting the experience. Along with this, it's hard to get the experience even with the qualifications because they then want to employ someone with experience! It's a catch 22!

I use CMD commands such as 'cacls' to set permissions.

Home use of staff laptops - detecting/consequences of misuse
plock replied to pete's topic in Wireless Networks
My setup is very similar to many of yours, restricted users, sometimes grant local admin rights for home printers/broadband. We govern all applications to prevent spyware/malware being brought onto our network. -
Not bad - I'll take a little look at PrimoPDF. I didn't realise there were so many free alternatives!

Cheers for that warning, we're scheduling a demo with Edexcel as we speak. Perhaps the ‘Everyone’ group wasn't inheriting on new items that appear in the Promissor directory. I've just checked this with my setup and it does seem to be happening. I'll give some feedback after the demo. Did you use the same switches as my above post? Cheers!

Evening all, Our sports department have managed to swindle five Wii's from Nintendo for our students. Now, he would like to connect them to our VGA monitors in the sports lab, and one through the VGA projector. Has anyone used the following three methods, what are your thoughts? http://www.vdigi.com/index.php?option=com_virtuemart&page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=2&Itemid=1 http://www.handhelditems.com/universal-nintendo-playstation3-xbox360-p-7381.html http://www.thegametrain.com/wii-vga-cable-box-with-video-recording-functions-p-198.html?currency=GBP

Free SSL Certificates for JANET connected schools
plock replied to Dos_Box's topic in Wireless Networks
The only way to use multiple certificates (presumably with HTTPS) with one IP address is to use a distinct port for each certificate you want to use, and provide links in the format https://domain.name:port/. Alternatively you can use one certificate with multiple names defined in the SubjectAltName attribute. The JANET Certificate Service permits this. You just need to supply the appropriate CSR. Cheers for that, this has been put on hold at the moment. I read somewhere about a Multiple Domain Certificate. What is this? How does this work? Cheers. -
A huge thank you has to go to 'jsnetman' for his MSI! I have now a fully automated Promissor install happening using GP. I have the MSI being pushed out then a batch file adding the registry key and allowing the user permissions on the Promissor directory. Here is a copy of my script for those of you that may wish to use it. @echo off IF EXIST "C:\promissor_installed.txt" GOTO :END regedit /s \\SERVERNAME\NETLOGON\promissorclient.reg cacls "C:\Program Files\Promissor" /t /e /g Everyone:F ECHO Promissor is now installed at %DATE% %TIME% >C:\promissor_installed.txt :END Good luck!

Instead of having your favourites being copied back and forth, why not just redirect them? Here is the script to move the old favourites to the re-directed UNC path. It's based on our usernames and folder structure being: Username: firstnamelastname## (## entry year, i.e. 07) Folder Structure: Pupils\#### (#### entry year, i.e. 2007) Script @echo off call set last_two=%USERNAME:~-2% set first2="20" set school_year=20%last_two% set oldfavs=\\SERVERNAME\pupils\%school_year%\%username%\favorites set newfavs=\\SERVERNAME\Pupils\%username%\favorites if not exist %oldfavs% GOTO :END_FAVS mkdir %newfavs% xcopy %oldfavs% %newfavs% /y /s del %oldfavs%\*.* regedit /s \\SERVERNAME\NETLOGON\favs.reg :END_FAVS Registry key [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\Favourites Modify and Export the key, then deploy this by calling it favs.reg and save it in the location defined in the script. Hope that helps. Remember that if you remove Contribute then that kills flashpaper PDF/SWF writer Perhaps try using PDFCreator - I have recently moved to this because Contribute will no longer have FlashPaper, it'll be selling as a seperate product. Follow this thread for more details: http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&p=133435#133435 Good luck!

Have deployed PDFCreator across the whole site on Tuesday, have had some good feedback from staff. Looks like we're settled for now! I think the head will be pleased to hear we're now saving huge amounts of money without having to pay for Adobe!
-
Currently we don't have Open Office deployed.

Morning all, As you're probably aware, Adobe has officially removed FlashPaper from the new version of Contribute. Another reason to divert my attention I feel! After a little look around the net I came across this marvellous tool. PDFCreator is completely freeware and comes with an MSI for AD deployment! I don't have to pay Adobe even more money for their PDF creator now! I downloaded the tool from here: http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57796&package_id=53473&release_id=442172 Hope that saves you some money too!

http://www.bombich.com - a super website for Mac support! I'm no expert on Mac's but am supposed to support a whole computer room full of them! That site has saved my life on many occasions!
-
Yeah IE7 was my issue, didn't have time to find a workaround so just resorted back to IE6.
-
It can be set in GPO; also IE7 caused me issues with my Wallpapers.
-
Either way works, depending on the software I generally have them in different GPO's. That way I can easily assign just one of the applications to another set of computers by easily linking just that software GPO. I do assign programs like Office and Learning Essentials in the same GPO, as they're similar and so forth. Hope that helps.
-
Leave the GPO and it will continue to check the software is installed, and install it on new machines added to the OU/Security Group that the GPO is linked with. When you delete the GPO I believe the software is uninstalled. When you remove the MSI from the GPO you're given an option to uninstall the software on all machines or leave it on the machine without installing it on any new machines added to the OU/Security Group. Hope that helps.

We have the remote control wall sockets for the speakers in our atrium areas; they're like 10 feet up the wall! They work really well though!
-
hehe - I managed to get a Pen Drive last year, only 64MB though!
-
I make an effort to go to BETT each year; I always end up with a fair few freebies! It's the carrying home on the train that I don't enjoy! hehe
-
Interesting, M$ take the network down again! Does configuring via GPO to disable the Windows Desktop Search work? Haven’t got the problem myself as yet!

Sorry slight off topic, how do you deal with multiple SSL Certificates with one public IP address? -
This may help: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows/search/dtscustomize.mspx Cheers

It's not a bad route to take - I did the same. Although I did complete my A Levels. Now currently studying for the MCSE - would like to then move onto the CCNA. Hope you like the new job.
