We have moved over to a new site just recently, well about 12 months ago! The whole old site was wiped completely. We've moved from being in the LEA to now being privately funded. When we moved across to the Academy we had the opportunity to buy any kit the predecessor school had, we took some of the latest servers we had purchased and so forth. All the other schools within the LEA were given first pick at the old kit from the site, all the rest was sold onto parents or the community. Not sure what the policies are for schools doing this themselves though?

Devizes School Online Booking System
plock replied to plock's topic in Network and Classroom Management
Ian, Thanks for your help previously; I'm sorry I've not been in touch to continue our investigation to the SQL Database connection problem. Things are manic here at the Academy! I have a slightly different problem now; the changes we made over the phone previously have caused the system to run more stable. However, when the system falls over, not as often, but when it does, the database connection isn't the error. Staffs’ are presented with a completely blank screen instead. Do you know what this may be? Thanks in advance! -
They were fortunate they came across you, someone who knows that they're talking about! The current Network I’m supporting is brand new, had lots of decisions made which were out of this world! Getting there slowly, I have Ramesys to thank for the 12 months it has taken!

I do find the Computer Weekly back page with Dilbert quite amusing!

Have you never had someone from outside or previous post holder make some decision which you for one can't understand and they've buggered off?

Tips to (not) get the most out of your IT department
plock replied to sidewinder's topic in General Chat
hehe - I think you should, you could make yourself a tidy little packet! Following on from 'sidewinder' #23 - Don't tell us the Make or Model of the printer because we can remember all 10 makes and models and where they're located on site. -

@ Lee_K_81 - #41 that’s so true! I often get calls from random folk trying to get some free support! -
Another strike for Log Me In! I use this on a variety of machines, it's free and simple to setup and use. I do however feel VPN has its place; personally I use Log Me In for most remote sites and personal use. For my main place of work, we have VPN setup so certain staff and I can VPN in on our laptops and use network resources, applications and so forth. In education generally speaking institutions have 'Application Servers', which for my place anyhow, has millions of educational resources for staff/students. VPN allows for these applications to be used from the standard user interface our staff are familiar with.

I could travel to London - but no degree sadly! Yet I could do the jobs hands down! I do feel degrees are somewhat over rated!

Out of interest, are you only looking to push this out to a couple of machines? If not, perhaps a more complex script similar to my one that will check the computers location in AD and then map the correct printer(s) accordingly? This can then be called up via a User Login Script or Startup Script I would imagine too. Give me a shout if you would like a copy of the script.

I was thinking the same thing!

Was just interested, and for everyone else’s information really. It's a couple of hours away from me, to far to travel essentially! hehe

Where are you based 'defiance'?

Interesting results, I feel bad that some of you are coping on your own! @localzuk - good man, lots of responsibility there! I would like to run a system on my own, would be an exciting challenge! Woah! That's a challenge!

Superb results so far, all results show that our team of four is most definitely needed! We support over 800 machines, roughly 300 being laptops! Along with another site (leisure center) that has three servers and roughly 15 client machines. 22 servers if I remember correctly on the main site, loads of media kit and so forth. We are hoping to get another member! We're a brand new site, brand new kit, and loads of it! Would you agree we could do with another member? Another question, are your sites fairly new? I presume newer sites will have more kit, requiring more staffing? Cheers!

Morning all, I'm currently fighting the case why we need our team. I'm interested in seeing how you guys cope, how many Network Engineers/Technicians and or a Network Manager do you have? How big is your team? How big is the schools network? Cheers in advance!

I'm a heavy user of LogMeIn also, brilliant freebie!

Morning all, I know this topic has been raised before, but I can't seem to find any information on setting it up. We have SharePoint Server 2003 as our VLE, students have their own 'My Sites' and within there we have their Exchange OWA email. I would also like to publish access to their home directories from within here, I know of resources such as WebDAV but because the school has previously purchased SharePoint I thought we might as well make the most of it. Does anyone have any information on setting up 'Home Directory' access for our students/staff within SharePoint Server 2003? Currently our staff’ have laptops with 'Offline Files' assigned, so this facility is mainly for our student body. Any help is greatly received.

I would also be interested in this!

Likewise no issues here thus far.

I have the same promise from my current employer; I'm pushing to get going in the first holiday of next year! Let’s hope they keep their word!

Evening djm968! I appreciate your compliments! Reading is very well, along with myself! Indeed you're correct the MCSE is what you need... it's where I'm currently heading! I plan to start it in the first holiday of 2008. I did notice the other topic you pointed out, exactly what I thought! How are you doing yourself? I'll try and call to catch up with you at some point shortly. Cheers.
