If you already have a Windows 2000 server DC and your new one is 2003 you'll also need to run adprep tool so your domain is ready for a 2003 server.

Use Ultimate boot cd to reset it.

Why not make the script write a txt file to the c drive (script_has_run.txt for example) then get the script to check for the existance of that tx file. If it exists on the c drive the script just exits - if it doesn't exist the script runs. That way it should run once, write the text file then not run on next boot.

Cue - flat network versus divided network debate again! We have a flat network - saves all the hassle, never had any issues and certainly don't feel we have "given up data security" In answer to the OP question - get everything onto one flat network and use SIMS attendance - it's free as it's already there and it seems to work really well (we implemented it 2 years ago.)

I don't understand why anyone in schools other than the IT support folks have the admin password. No-one else needs it as far as I can see.

There also seem to be a number of people going CMIS back to SIMS. Why does your school want to change. A frying pan to fire scenario may be coming your way!

Yes (not, perhaps laptops left on the desk) 3. how fast do you resolve things? ASAP (usually within the morning or afternoon they are logged. Certainly within a couple of days 4. who monitors your performance? I do as IT Manager (and the customers I guess) 5. do you ever supply self help answers rather than jsut doing the job for the teacher Yes (the old give a man afish proverb) 6. how do students interact with the helpdesk? We don't have one so they just email or turn up at the IT office 7. what is your school policy on requesting help? does it all have to be via helpdesk, how do you deal with people that refuse to play ball? We had this with some laptops using ATI cards. We found a tick box somewhere in the settings called "theatre mode" - clicking that cured it for us.

I would echo this - SIMS ain't perfect but having work on MIS systems over the years none of them are. If you need to talk to a school that switched back I know The Lakes School in Windermere did.

Do you not have the facility to have an IP address unfiltered? We have 2 IP's that have no filtering whatsoever for myself and my senior tech?

I'm with Russ here - we use web links provided by Careersoft - saves tedious updating every year!

I go on our yr 7 residential which is a week of drama, art and outdoor pursuits. Yr 8 outdoor pursuits weekend, yr 9 outdoor pursuits weekend, Currently directing a drama production for KS3 for performance in Jan (yikes that's come around quickly!) Also organise our whole school activity day in summer - 900 kids 30 trips - deep joy! (mind you I do get paid a bursuary for that which usually pays for the summer holiday!) In the past have run animation projects and other IT stuff and involved in various fashion shows, PTA events and school productions. Do a bit of ICT sometimes as well

Why not - it's school equipment ergo the school dictates what can and can't be on there. If staff put music on their laptops here (or in there network space) it's just deleted - no questions. Staff are told clearly what they can and can't do with the laptop (and network) and they are expected to stick to it. The head is backing you - just do what he asks. I would get him to announce that the staff must return laptops for reimaging to you. I wouldn't expect to store music on my school laptop (and I don't) - it's the schools not mine!

If you get the chance go to the comedy store on a Wednesday night - they do 2 or so hours of Who's Line is it Anyway style games - it is just outstanding. They will probably just laugh it off. **I am not supporting or going against what has been said** That's missing the point mate. *I* find the use of the word gay to rubbish something offensive (as do others on here) and that's the issue. I spend so much time telling kids off for saying that kind of thing and using the word gay as a term of abuse - it's as unacceptable as racist language.

Travelling from Oxenholme Lake District to Euston on the wednesday (£77 return), do a bit of BETT on Wed aft, comedy store wed night, more BETT on thursday then 3 or 4 o'clock train back home.
