Athlona is right - you can put a bigger drive in and it will only use the amount needed.

As a school using LP+ and Sharepoint all I can say is "All that glisters is not gold"!

If I recall when we had it do that it was to do with permissions being set incorrectly on the workstation (but it was a while back). I think folks need to be able to write to a certain location.

Don't you have to go for the Elite pack 360 to get HDMI output? If truth be told (despite having had a 360 and now a PS3) I'd buy a Wii for sheer entertainment and Mario Kart is out soon!!!

To a point I'm with you but pens etc don't allow the video/pics etc to be shared around the internet instantly. The trouble with all these things is the minority screwing it up for the majority. Eg. Lets unfilter the internet - if we teach kids to use it properly there isn't a problem. Most kids here would use it sensibly but some wouldn't and that's why we ban/legislate. I mean should there have to be a law to stop people drink driving - of course not - most right minded folks would see it as madness to drink and drive but some don't and the law exists to catch them! I could see lots of students here using phones/ipods etc well but I know some won't (it's already happened) so we make rules for the minority thus others suffer. That's how life is.

I guess the counter argument would be that if students have mobiles out it is hard to tell if they are using them as you'd like or texting their mates.

I think this is probably connected with bringing your MIS system into common usage by teaching staff - ensuring they use it to record assessment data etc then using it (along side things like FFT data) to help them achieve better results and CVA scores. It certainly fits with the AfL (Assessment for Learing) agenda and try to provide ways of helping staff have "their finger on the pulse".

Nah - had one sold it, got PS3 - sooooo much better IMHO. Samsung is what I was thinking but Sony seem to do some nice stuff too.

Chuck it out, use a vanilla set up. It's much more easier in the long run.

Don't know about that contract but we use Stone for most of our kit and they are excellent. If we have a problem and log it they are almost always out next day to repair it and the guys we get are very helpful.

I think our script is probably the wiki one iirc (thanks Ric) and it works just fine. I tend to agree that a couple of lighter weight boxes are better than one big on - we are using some HP 1U rack mount ones - we just mirrored the drives for a bit of resiliance and stuck lots of RAM in it. I can see a time when we have a number of servers feeding lots of TS clients as large parts of the school do only use ICT for basic functions. The room we replaced all the monitors in looks nice and shiny which the head loves and the PC's would have been scrapped but now have a new lease of life. We built a spare PC as a server and couple of old boxes as clients to have play with it first. You can have our thinstation image too if it helps.

Yes we use thinstation which seems to work fine. We have just left the hard drives in but CF cards would be a plan. We just wanted to spend as little as possible. The workstations run Office 2003, IE, Openmind, techsoft 2d design - nothing too exciting but covering the basic stuff. All our printers are via a printserver so we just script them to get a printer based on the station name for the thin clients. I'm happy to share that with you as I think I got most of the code off here anyway! Hope this helps but just ask if I can be of further help.

We run a mixed ecomony of fat and thin clients. We bought a fairly cheap HP box (under £1000) to act as a terminal server and we run 50 clients from it with no bother. We bought some new flat screens, mice and keyboards and refurbished (repaired face plates, cleaned etc.), turned them into thinclients and deployed the new monitors etc. The result is 50 PC's that look good as they have flat screens hiding the old base units and run quickly as they are thin client. In all they're ideal for the areas that browse the web and use office. Cost wise it worked out about £100 per station (inc. mouse, keyboard, monitor and client licence) + £1000 for the server, so for £6000 (£120 each) we replaced 50 PC's. That seems like cracking value to me.

Right click is available here - we seem to have no trouble with it as we use group policy to lock out bits we don't want students to have access to. I agree it is important they learn how to use it.

Well I did ours the way I described with no problems.

You can set your desktop PC up to be a TFTP server. Basically find some free tftp software (think I used Solarwinds) and install it. You can then point your switch at your PC's IP address and you should be able to install the software you want. Sorry that's rather vague - it's ages since I did one but basically setting up a TFTP server is pretty straight forward so nothing to be too daunted by. Hope that helps - if I get chance I'll try it out on a switch here and give you more detailed instructions.

We have a script that looks at the OU the PC is in from AD then assigns printers accordingly. You're welcome to that if you want.

You should easily be able to do that. Knock a quick report up and export to Excel. I am assuming all you want is: Surname Forename ICT Class or something similar.
