I would tend to agree with Synack. We replaced our switches recently with some 3com managed ones and had a similar issue. STP was turned on on all ports - turning it off seemed to cure the problem.

Most of my staff seem to train up in school jobs then move on to places like Lancaster Uni. In fact I think Lancs should start slipping me some commission! Think Zak is correct though - the range and variety of work in schools is huge compared to many other areas.

A friend of mine "fast-tracked" theirs - only took 8 weeks!!!

They are managed but not giving much away! They worked ok with netgear one end and HP the other. Turn on 30 PC's and most of them don't even get DHCP address. Very odd and worrying!

We replaced some of our switches with some new 3Com 48 port managed switches and now the rooms run like a dog!! The switches all go back to our HP 5400 zl which was working fine with our old netgear kit. They all go back on fibre running at 1Gb. Does anyone have any ideas as to why the new switches should be so slow?

Thanks Phil. I don't have a case ref. as it was just a phone call with nothing registered for action. To give you the full story I rang yesterday having run SOLUS and not had the Aug release available and asked where it was. The guy said "there is a bug in it so it's not available yet". I asked if I needed it for A level results on Wednesday and was told yes. I was told "there is a meeting this afternoon to decide what we are doing". I went in again today and ran SOLUS and it was there. I rang helpdesk again and asked if the bug had been fixed and it was safe to install and was told it was. I again asked if it was needed and was told yes. To be honest it's not a big deal -just nice to know where we stand.

As I said in another thread - it would be good if you and helpdesk were singing the same tune! When I rang the national helpdesk they said yesterday and today that it was needed for results! Anyway I have done it without any visible issues.

According to Capita helpdesk it is needed (Maybe Capita need to sing from the same hymn sheet). I've done mine this morning and it all went smoothly. Tried a few bits and it all seems to work. Fingers crossed for results day!

I came in to do it yesterday (11th Aug) and it wasn't in SOLUS. Rung helpdesk and was told there was a problem with it and they were having a meeting that afternoon to discuss what to do. They also said it was needed for results day!! Waiting for a call back to say what their cunning plan is! STOP PRESS: IT NOW IS ON SOLUS. Spoken to helpdesk and they reckon it will be fine to apply. Ah well here goes!

How is the IP address for your Vista laptop configured? My guess is it is getting it via DHCP from your router. You need to make sure that it is using your Windows 2003 server as it's DNS. If not when you try to join it to the domain it will look at your ISP's DNS server which (naturally) will not have any knowledge of your domain. Your Windows 2003 server should be set to forward requests to your ISP's DNS servers.

I guess I meant trust to include cometency as well - again if they aren't competent then they are not working for me My team don't have full access to some things - e.g. SIMS and the Finance system - not even I have a logon for the finance package!

Each to their own I guess. Got to say if I didn't think I could trust my team with admin accounts they wouldn't be working for me. As you say though, I'm sure Jamie_a knows his staff and I don't know his setup. I know my team would be very ineffective if they didn't have admin rights as so much of what they do depends on it.

Cheers Steve. I guess I would have to add I am very lucky in my school - good pay, good hols, well respected department, mostly friendly staff, lovely location etc.

I'm sure it will be superb for you. My advice is: 1. Get involved in whole school life - it makes it much more enjoyable if you have your fingers in as many pies as possible 2. Remember they are kids - they get it wrong and make mistakes just like adults. Always be ready to forgive and forget. 3. Try not be seen as the grumpy IT tech who just bans stuff for students and makes their lives dull. Work with the kids if possible and get to know them. 4. Enjoy - there is nothing like working in a school - sure it's hard at times and we all moan about it (me included) but it really is a unique place to be - cliched but you really are making a difference to peoples lives!

Sorry I must be missing something - why not just give them full admin accounts and trust their proffesionalism not to interfere with each others sites?

I would imagine a solution like Free Open Ghost (FOG) would be just the ticket. I set it up easily on an oldish PC (just followed the Wiki on the site using Ubuntu) and we're currently imaging linux boxes off it. Works a treat.

Oh heck - clicked the wrong vote. I meant to say Yes OO should work with SIMS, and we'd like to move to it.
