What you need is SLT support - when we implemented it a year ago some staff moaned about it but were just told (by SLT) that was the way we did registers in our school - going back to paper wasn't a choice or option for individual teachers. We have just ditched paper discipline slips in favour of direct entry to SIMS and some will complain but the message will be the same. It really does need SLT to get behind these initiatives.

A mac is much better IMHO and I have done a fair bit on both. We find our media students produce much better results using the Macbooks in mac mode than in Windows mode. It just seems to flow much more smoothly. As Domino said I would look at an iMac which does pretty much what you require I would imagine and is very easy to work with.

That'll be something to listen to when your waiting for the breakdown truck to fix another alfa failure

@Stewart - if it's CMIS I won't be going for it. Not really sure if I want to go at all yet - just started my 9th year which is about 6 more than any other job I've done and feeling I maybe need new challenges. On the other hand compared to many of the tales I read on here I have a pretty good deal - just been offered a TLR equivalent to hold the director of elearning role which could be good.

I must have missed that in the bits I read - shame - if it had been SIMS I may have had a go at that one.

We pick stuff up ourselves most times (although 1 company we use now come straight to our office with it) and site staff move stuff for us sometimes (not because of any "it's their job - not ours" mentality) - just because they are helpful chaps. Like others I couldn't believe the OP's attitude. Working in schools is all about getting stuck in and playing the team game. As many have said on here we are all doing tasks we are way over qualified for but the job is what it is. Personnally I think the way everyone pulls together at our place is what makes it one of the best places I've ever worked.

Think Wisesoft (WiseSoft - Resources for IT Professionals) has a bulk modify utility. If is as good as the account management spreadsheet from the same site it will be excellent. PS Thanks to the guy who writes that app - it has saved me hours this term!

We get this request for adult ed courses. To get round it we created a virtual PC image that was basically unlocked and let them use that.

Myself and my team all have newish PC's of a reasonable spec. 1Gb LAN cards into the core switch, 4Gb RAM - 80Gb primary drive with 320Gb secondary + dual monitors. I also have a MacBook which I quite like.

Just a digital camera and the class list. One of us calls the kids out and writes the photo down while the other takes the snaps. Then we just manually chuck em in SIMS. To be honest it's pretty quick - this year we had 247 intake and got them all snapped and in SIMS in about 3 hours. Pretty sure there isn't a webcam way - would be good if there was.

For SIMS and we put out a couple of booklets out explaining who everyone is and how to contact them - their photos go in that too.

Must say we've had a cracking start to the term. Few niggles but nothing to shout about. Staff were in Mon and Tues, Year 7 Wednesday which we got photographed and in SIMS by lunchtime. All back today. We've even got our new HP managed wireless sorted after a bit of a tussle. Just got back from a start of term curry (IT tech team and IT teaching staff) to get to know the newbies - very pleasant. Only 7 weeks to half term after tomorrow too!

We support our feeder primaries 2 hours per week - they get that free. They can then buy extra hours in if they need them. We do routine stuff - hardware repair, software install, IWB & projector training etc. A couple of schools have contracted with us to redesign and rebuild there networks but have paid the school and my team well for it (£25 and hour to the techs). I think the biggest benefit to them is the fact we aren't selling anything - we price kit with our suppliers and they buy at the rates we do. They also don't get sold the wrong stuff, examples of which are: Full exchange server for 80 student primary school Windows Small Business Server rather than 2003 for next to nothing. Fully wireless network including the server! Guess how often that fell apart. The other big payoff is the primary school kids get to know at least someone from the secondary and it often helps us later on.

Not true at all - we've been using reg and lesson monitor for ages and they both work a treat.

I agree that SIMS needs to have that quick reporting functionality that Nova T4 has however as it doesn't exist we gave all staff access to Nova - not individually but just by getting them to use the default user button.This give them minimal access with no work on your part. Far from ideal but it gets you by.

Thanks - ours won't even find the each other in the switch with the WESM installed. I did add a DNS record as I'd seen that could be an issue but to no avail.

Thanks - it is plugged into the same switch as the module.

OK- we have just installed a wireless edge services module into our HP 5406zl core switch and bought some HP Procurve 210 Radio points. Now all the documentation says plug the module in, do a few simple configs, plug radio points in and the edge module should adopt them. Needless to say this is not working at all - they just stay in unadopted mode. Does anyone have any experience of these bits or any bright ideas? I have read so much stuff and nothing works! Help please??!
