We use the behaviour management module extensively and have done away with paper discipline slips all together. Once staff are trained in it (and that has been a relatively calm process here) it is brilliant - a much more coherent way of recording behaviour/detention. The detention section isn't that complex but of course as it's new staff do have to think a bit more to begin with. The important thing for me in all the SIMS initiatives we have pushed is to have the message coming right from the top. I am blessed with some excellent SLT members who see the value of central recording and have backed the changes.

With respect it is a very irrelevant point. It makes no difference if teachers do or don't pay back cpd fees - they are on completely different terms and conditions.

Required as soon as possible, an enthusiastic, self motivated and committed person to maintain and further develop our Admin and Curriculum Network systems. This role requires “hands-on” experience of the installation and maintenance of Windows 2K, Active Directory, building and setting up of DHCP, Web and Mail servers. Educated to HND/NVQ level 4 in IT or Computer Science, and qualified to CNE/MSCE or equivalent, you must be willing to develop your knowledge to keep pace with technological developments across the range of ICT services. Knowledge of Novell networks would be an advantage.

It would seem reasonable to ask you to sign this before going on the course and indeed I have worked in many places where this is the norm. However to do it after attendance is unreasonable and I probably wouldn't sign it on that basis.

The role of our ICT co-ordiantor is to be part of the ICT strategy group and to work with staff to see how ICT can be embedded into the school wide curriculum. E.g they will come along and say x wants to achieve this. Is it possible, what are the resource implications etc, is there a better way. Discussions are had and then software/hardware/technologies specified and approved by me are purchased/implemented. In our school they certainly don't just go off and buy stuff.

We used to do that but this year we have given up to it. IMHO a banning culture seems to achieve little. We used to get staff saying "they need access for such and such a lesson" and to be honest you have little choice but to allow them back on in those circumstances. What I have done here is made ICT "offences" much more in line with the normal code of conduct in school - so playing games etc earns them a disicpline slip (all done via SIMS) just like messing around in a lesson would, vandalism is usually letters home and a bill for repairs (again this is what we do if they break a window or door). The upshot is that we are trying to embed the culture that ICT matters are no different than other matters around the place. The net result is this puts the onus on staff not us to police things. All in all it seems more successful than banning lots of kids.

We get our 5430 carts remanufactured locally so we can reuse them.

Could you not install them as virtual machines?

I had lots of 2500 codes which were generated by 1 person having a Z in their attendance records (not allowed). This caused the system to generate an error for every student!

Surely that depends on how the school is structured. One of my techs is IT/AV and all AV requests come through me to be scheduled into the departments work load. Seems to work ok here. In terms of salary - it's about the same as my 2 senior techs get and they are both very able - certainly not in the pay peanuts catergory.

I have to say that on the whole Capita support works for me. There are times when I get frustrated but on balance I find them pretty good. I rarely get a first line fix but the 2 calls I logged this week were sorted out within an hour so and that seems to be the norm (at least over the past few months).

What have you got in the way of colour lasers? I need to replace our ailing Konica 5430DLs with something soon.

Done Sept upgrade here and no probs. Even sorted my Census out today! Excellent stuff.

We've had SIMS in classrooms for a couple of years now and to be honest we don't have technical solution to the issue. We have trained all staff to lock their PC and to be fair most of them manage it. SLT are very behind this and do give people who don't lock machines a going over.
