Does VLAN'ing offer better performance than just QoS?

Hi All, I have a problem where the mojority of the student iPads are often (but intermittently) having issues with connecting to the internet. The iPads will be unable to connect to a website that it was working fine with a few seconds ago. If you leave it a couple of minutes it will work. If you immediately turn on Airplane Mode and then turn it off again, it will work straight away. I'm using UniFi Nano HD APs, UniFi switches, Server 2012R2 as the only DC with DNS and DHCP. No VLANS in use and wireless laptops aren't missing a beat. No DNS errors are coming up in event viewer on the Windows Server. The iPads are fine when I've taken a handful home to test. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to chase this down to see what's causing it? Thanks,

We use MS Forms - It's simple and does the job. It doesn't allow for follow-ups but from what I gather from those using it, that would only be RIDDOR reportable ones and that's done on an LA system.

Try not adding the Wifi Profile in AC2 and just connect to the wifi manually on that iPad. Try adding Mosyle as an MDM provider in AC2 so that it does the initial enrolment bit on there rather than through the browser If the above don't work, try adopting it into DEP on ASM

I use Mosyle as well and get on with it really well. I found out about it when I noticed they were using it at an Apple Education event in London. The price is good, and worth the money but there's a minimum licence order of 30 units which is daft and prohibitive unless/until you get enough devices to use the licences.

I set up 3CX and a few Yealink T46S phones out of interest. It is easy and cheap but it's one more thing that comes down to you to sort. I did a comparison of costs against having another company do the phones on a Cloud Hosted VOIP situation and found that it's worth the cost to spread the risk and hassle a bit, especially as it still offered decent savings over the existing analogue system. The trial helped in upskilling us to be able to deal with initial issues and being able to tell if we were being BS'd by a supplier. We sold the phones and did a procurement process with some 3rd parties and they invariably resell and value-add the top Cloud hosted providers like CallSwitch, Horizon and Xelion. The first thing to sort is getting your alarm(s) off of redcare. Find out who's monitoring what - some schools have different intruder and fire companies. Some will buy red care and the alarm companies will piggyback and others will have the whole lot done by the alarm company. There's usually a choice between a TCP/IP link or a 4G link. There was a cost to get the change done but that saved money within the first year by getting rid of redcare. Then decide whether you want to keep your existing physical lines. I think most people would suggest that you don't. Then you need to decide whether you're going to put in a dedicated broadband connection for the phones or not. The companies prefer it sometimes because it takes away any issues of filtering and firewalls, but in reality thats not a big issue. The broadband capacity used by VOIP calls is TINY (use 1 Mbps per 10 simultaneous calls as a guide). The issue of losing your internal phone system if your internet connection goes down can be sorted with an SBC (Session Border Control) unit on site which will ensure that internal calls don't leave the internal network. I found that this added a layer of complexity with Softphones, apps and using them at different locations though so best to weigh up what you need, or might need in future.

Hi All, I'm trying to get my head around moving DCs to the cloud but can't find what I need to get so that I can assess costs. I would rather move sites wholesale to AAD rather than mess about with hybrid versions. What I'd like to do is: *DHCP, DNS and local file cache on a 4-bay NAS joined to AAD. *Join devices to the AAD domain and be able to set policies there that the devices can access from any location *Policy requirements are basic and would consist of: Print management, per device or per user; set logon screen options; set drive maps; add shortcuts as in local GPP; transfer files or registry items as in GPP; *program/app deployment - we currently use PDQ Deploy which is a breeze but have seen reports that this won't work with AAD only machines and won't even connect using a common local admin credential. *users log in to any device using their O365 credentials from anywhere and get a regular domain-joined machine experience. What do I need from MS to make this work? How much is it likely to cost? Can the extra licences be added on to the OVS-ES agreement? Thanks,

I'm not back on-site until tomorrow, but will check the above suggestions then. That site doesn't have any VLANs. It's a small network and they don't have any CCTV or VOIP phones.

The PoE switch was swapped recently as the old one was over its power budget and was making APs go down one after the other and then come back online in rotation! I'll check your suggestion. It is running the stock config though. Thanks,

I've tried putting a new r510AP up which has fixed the problem for 1 of the three affected devices. I thought about wireshark and then remembered I don't have a clue how to do anything useful with it.

Hi All, I have a Ruckus network with 10 ZF7363 APs and a ZoneDirector 1100. All of which are out of support. I have a number of laptops now that won't get an IP address when connected to certain access points and won't communicate to the AP if I assign the laptop a static IP address. Even though the laptops don't pick up DHCP addresses, I can see on the ZD that their mac address is associated to the correct AP. If I walk down the corridor it will automatically roam (which the ZD logs) and pick up an address and be ok. Then when I go back to the affected AP it drops out again and loses its IP. This is affecting 3 laptops so far. They have a mixture of wireless cards - Centrino N 2200, Intel 8265ac, and Intel 9260ac. All three laptops are running Windows 10 1903 with updates completed. All are Intel i3, 4th Gen, 7th Gen and 8th Gen. I'm typing this from a MacBook connected to one of the affected APs, while a PC next to me is plugged in to the APs pass-through ethernet and a number of other devices around me are connected and working fine. If anyone can help figure out what's going on, I would appreciate it.

I want people to be able to share individual list items to whomever they want, but it will only allow the link to work for people who already have access- the other items are greyed out. I can share files from a document library but not from this list, which is within the same site collection. Any ideas where I'm going wrong? Thanks,

Hi All, I thought this would be a good time to chip in - I've just made the switch from Securus to Senso for safeguarding and am rolling it out to 6 sites over a period of a couple of months. The sites I'm deploying to don't use classroom management software at the moment so that is all a brilliant bonus for them. I used Impero in a previous life and was pleased with it but have heard from various sources that it's on the slide both in terms of reliability and value. I trialled back in February after seeing senso at BETT in 2018 and again in 2019. I've come back to it in the past few weeks and gotten it off the ground at 2 sites and I'm pleased with everything so far. The safeguarding looks every bit as good as Securus but with a quicker and arguably more intuitive interface. The teachers love the modules we have enabled access to so far. It's also come in much cheaper than Securus. My only critisisms are: *The scheduling module is not as intuitive as you'd hope. Sometimes you'll want to apply a policy constantly during a period of time (eg mute sound) but sometimes you'll want to trigger it at a certain time and nothing else (WOL, Shutdown, Restart). The interface doesn't make it clear how to do this so trial and error is needed. *The power scheduling is clunky and if you don't follow the guide, you're likely to shut whole groups down immediately. The option for the user to delay or snooze the shutdown would be good too *The WOL function isn't as instant as our ConnectWise Control client, which is a shame.

If, like some of our schools, your internet connection provider sets your IP range, you'll need to contact them to agree an extended IP range. Once they've done that, you can add a new DHCP superscope with both ranges and you'll be good to go.

Hi All, No affiliation with the app, but wanted to let you all know about something I came accross this week that's proving really useful: https://www.skyjos.com/fileexplorer/ There's a free version that allows you one connection but it has to be entered manually on the iPad. The Pro version has unlimited connections to different services including SMB shares and you can export a config from one iPad and add it in to MDM to auto-configure all the others. I've set it up for children to access the student public area using a service account and the speed with which it connects and authenticates is impressive. An ideal alternative to Foldr if you don't need the individual AD logins/mappings. Regards,

Just wanted to pop Senso.cloud in the mix here. I've been hugely impressed by that. Over the next 12 months I can see it replacing Securus in all our schools for less than the annual cost of securus and the classroom management stuff will be a 'free' bonus!

Has anyone managed to get rid of the shortcuts that aren't wanted on the start menu?

Does this stop the icons appearing or just prevent them from running? Both would be ideal but the former would be fine.

I'm sorry this isn't an answer to your actual problem, but FWIW I got rid of all the tiles and then exported the layout with PS. I've made more use of the desktop if people want a more visual layout of applications.

Also interested in people's views on this. I'm not massively fussed about removing the apps - I just want to hide the icons to tidy the start menu!

I've carried on with the Win 7 Redirected start menu and it is reliable enough but can't figure out how to remove native app shortcuts. I've tried uninstalling them in the past which ended up in a world of pain and despair so would be content with just hiding them to tidy the start menu. Redirected desktop works a dream - I'm half tempted to sack off the start menu all together!
