Yep the profile deletes on log off, and it's definitely a mandatory profile

Morning all, Our students use a mandatory profile, the start menu layout xml applies and works fine with no missing tiles on first logon to a machine. If that student logs off and logs back on the same machine, or any other student logs on for that matter, all tiles are missing on the start menu. Reboot the machine and again - first log on after reboot is fine, from then on it has missing tiles until the machine reboots again. I hope this makes sense, has anyone else come across this? Hi All, I have had some spare time for a change, to finally crack Windows 10 Mandatory profiles, ready for our academic roll out for September. I am going to share this with everyone, in the hope that others find it a successful method too. This method allows a quick reliable log on, with start menu tiles intact on every log on, at least in my experience. I plan on doing a proper write up with screenshot at some point soon. Here it goes: Firstly, make sure the computer you are using to create this profile has Delete Cached Roaming Profiles disabled, so the cache stays intact on the C: Drive. This can be enabled again after this process if finished. Create a dummy student account username: dummystudent, and give the student a roaming profile. Log the dummy student on and set up the profile as you wish, e.g. expanding the file explorer tabs, setting up start menu tiles etc. Once happy, log the dummy student off and log on to your own network admin account. Locate the roaming profile you have just set up, load the .DAT hive in Regedit and export to a .reg file. Open this .reg file in Notepad and find and replace dummystudent with %username%. This is as per most mandatory profile instructions. Save the .reg and Merge it back into the hive. Set the Hive permissions to Everyone - Full Control and unload the hive. Copy the above profile to your Mandatory Profile share, making sure permissions are appropriate. ie. student accounts can read the profile share and contents. put .V5 as an extension and rename NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN. Now that local cached profile outlined above, copy the Local folder within AppData (C:\users\dummystudent\AppData\Local) to the AppData within the mandatory profile on the share. There you go, a working mandatory profile. No black screen on login, no dodgey start menu, fast log in time. Cheers Scott

Hi everyone I created a Mandatory profile using the method above, all working ok apart from the pinned taskbar shortcuts (see screenshot below), Once logged on they appear as blank pages and only work if I right-click on them to launch the program.. Not ideal. Has anyone else come across this? Cheers

Restarted the PC and it updated itself, and killed the classic start menu software.. Argh... all part of the testing process I suppose :-(

I started off with the one you posted, now i'm creating my own.. Logged on locally and set up the start menu settings and exported the registry keys. Converted them to XML and imported into the GPO. Going to test shortly Cheers

Only problem I have at the moment is some of the GPO settings are not applying.. for instance i've set Control Panel to not be displayed but it isn't budging..

Morning All, We're currently in the process of testing Windows 10 for students (we already have some staff testing it for us who are giving helpful feedback), for students we would like to stick with a Mandatory profile, mainly because it is easier to manage one profile rather than 4000+ roaming profiles, and it is quick to log on. I have configured a Mandatory profile for Windows 10 and assigned it to our test student account, however when logged on with this profile the user's start menu does not open, the action centre doesn't work, nor does Cortana.. has anybody else experience this? If so, have you found a fix? Cheers

Could the local HDDs be Full on these 3 iMacs? This can cause the issues described. I usually connect said iMacs to a working iMac using a Firewire cable, boot the offending iMac into thunderbolt/firewire mode (by holding down T on boot up). Then clear space if required using the working mac, as the other mac appears as an external drive. Cheers,

I spent many months trying to make the 'Applying Group Policy Printers' process faster on logon. However no matter what I tried, it was always very slow. I ended up writing a simple VBS logon script, which adds the relevant main printer depending on which OU the computer is located, sets it as default and also adds secondary printers if required. Plus another script that installs the desired printer depending on computer name, mainly for specific computer that require a different printer to the rest of the computers in an OU. As our staff accounts are roaming profiles, they would have the problem you describe, a build up of printers installed on their profile. I got round this by using a .bat log off script which runs ADPRINTX with the command /f which deletes all printers on the profile quickly on log off. I have to say, it all works very well. Reliable and quick, really quick. The only occasional problem we get is when people log on too soon after the logon screen appears on some machines (particularly Dell machines for some reason), the NIC isn't fully connected to the network so they get a script error, but this rarely happens. If you would like a sample of this script to help you test it, please let me know. Cheers,

I totally agree. The Start Menu was a lot better in the first W10 Technical Preview build, I really hope they revert it back or at least provide an option to choose the Start Menu style..

Afternoon All, We're currently in the process of testing Mavericks before potential roll out later this year.. I've come across a problem with proxy authentication, the internet works fine on the local accounts with the proxy settings inputted, but when logged in with a AD user the proxy fails to authenticate, I have checked and the proxy details are entered exactly the same as the local account. I have tried installing Chrome to see if it was an issue with Safari, but the problem continues, I've also tried copying the internet password keychain to System as advised on other forums with no success.. Has anyone else come across this? If so what was the fix? Any help would be great, Thanks in advance!

Thanks for that themightmrp, I'll test that out. This afternoon however, what I have come to realise is - when a user logs on to a machine, they get the correct printer for the machine and the previous printer(s) but if the user logs off and back on to the same machine, the rogue printer(s) delete and they are left with the correct printer. Obviously we can't make users log on twice, has anyone else come across this at all? Thanks,

Morning All, I'm in the process of setting up printers on Group Policy, this is my first time doing it in an environment using Roaming Profiles. The problem is, when a user logs on to a machine with a printer targetted to the machines' OU, that printer installs, but when the user logs off and logs on to another machine in a different OU they get the printer targetted to that OU too, so eventually the user will have every printer available installed, instead of just the ones relevant to the room they are in. I have tried adding 'Delete All' to the policy (see attached screenshot) and putting it at number 1 in the order but it still doesn't work reliably.. Any advise would be great please! Cheers Scott

Is it me or have they swapped round the Open Link in New Tab and Open Link in New Windows in the new Safari? I seem to keep hitting the wrong one so something has changed! EDIT: Just had a quick look on a Mountain Lion mac and it has changed, I thought it was me being special. Very annoying.
