Yeah, maybe do defrag etc... I often prefer with slow machines to do re-installs its sometimes faster to back it up reinstall it and restore the data.. if they don't mind of course. I like bottles of Bordeaux.. used to be self employed.... its a pain in the ass having to fill in self assessments so the occasions I do it I do it for Red :-)

XP Pro has a set number Remote of connections it allows at once... i think 5 so a NAS box would be better.

MS have released a Bare Metal Hyper-V basically 2k8 core with hyper-v on... to run the mmc snap-in manager you will need another 2k8 server or Vista Client. If all you want to do is run Virtual Servers on the box then a Core install of 2K8 is a good idea or the aforementioned bare metal release. if its just for testing then i guess you don't need to go crazy maybe even a desktop board will do with a quad core intel... but watch out as some desktop boards will max out at 8gb... though some take 16... if you want to use it proper then don't buy the desktop stuff... I guess the key is a lot of RAM since each VS will take 1 - 4 GB depending on its role. disk system will depend on what you want them to do as stated earlier! i think i mentioned in a different thread what our VS host does and has in it http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows/30126-physical-virtual-2.html

I'm sure someone will come up with a real solution but can you not schedule a job from a workstation so at least it is scanned semi regularly? i know the version of Sophos we get from our LEA will go on workstations or Servers without complaint, though Sophos does generally suck!

I have seen this sometimes when over a network share where i have had to refresh before i have seen the folder i just created... im thinking particularly of my desktop.. not fixed it and its not consistent... (again x64 vista) wow that was no help at all!! what happens if you copy stuff in do they show up straight away or do you have to do refresh for this too...

I am in the middle of moving as much as possible over to Virtualised infrastructure. at the moment i have a single Hyper-V (Core Enterprise) server 10GB and 2 quad core xeons 1U intel with mirrored Disks. It runs just Dandy at the moment, though i wouldn't like to put much more on it. 1 MO Sharepoint 2007 Server (Front End not DB) 1 EPortal (CMIS Web Front End) 1 Moodle Server <- on win2k3 lightly used experimental.. not happy that the DB is on the VHD but don't know enough about linux or moodle to set it up properly.. 1 Heritage 2K8 Library System server. Old kelidos V2 server (again under used another story) and MSDE on VHD it also ran QCA onscreen testing and runs Edexcel server when required. I am going to get another next year and do the 2k8r2 load balancing thingymebob My Question is on SAN this is where i would like to know what people do... do you attach the SAN to the Hyper-V/Virtual host and dump the VHDs on it or do you in the Virtual Servers add an iSCSI host and offer the SAN space direct to the Virtual host data D: Drive as it were... <- im thinking this might be better for Light DB stuff .. or you could start to visualize file servers maybe? I will have a look at Openfiler as i was looking at Linux for SAN as i want to do it myself and Win doesn't do it out the Box :-( again Core would have been ideal!

I think the Logic is that it moves the development on out of the 32 bit environment to the 64 bit. they will need to stop supporting and building 32 bit systems some time like they did with win16. and WoW for 16 has just been dropped with the advent of x64 platforms, so i guess despite the OS moving to pure x64 WoW32 will be around for a long time and will support older software much like WoW16 did with old win 3.1 Apps right up to XP.. The Logic kind of breaks in that Win7 looks to be offered in both and that means that they will still be developing the code tree and support for both!! i think now XP and Vista have got x64 incarnations surely they could have put Win7 on just a X64 platform... maybe the driver development for Vista/Win7 x64 is still to low a base...

i've done one off app installs using GPO with a special user, ie psinstall (for photoshop) the GPO sets the shell to be a cmd script the script calls the installer you then simply need to do stuff like disable all bar log off on the security screen. also set a flurry of GPO settings that make sure that no other shell can be run cant logon disconnected etc. just make sure the user ends up with local admin rights. I've also used this method for activating software that requires admin rights... except it would run the software as the shell..

Ok.. this adds to the mystery.. using the TS gateway i can connect to a 2K3 server that is accepting RDP sessions. by manually filling out the RDP connection settings... manually filling them out for the 2K8 TS server i get the same error... so it must be something between 2K8 and Win7... a new feature / check that MS added either to 2K8 or Win7 that only gets tested between the two.... hum... Edit... Interestingly I can connect to a normal 2K8 Server.. Via the TS gateway.. just not the actual Terminal Server!!

ok tried to connect to schools Terminal Server (2K8) Via a TS Gateway (from outside) now this worked fine in Vista before i blew away the Laptop to install Win7 Beta i now get this error The remote computer could not be authenticated due to problems with its security certificate. it may be unsafe to proceed. Certificate name Name in the Certificate from the remote computer: TSServerName.My_internal_Domain.lan Certificate errors The Following errors were encountered while validating the remote computer's certificate: A revocation check could not be performed for the certificate. You cannot proceed because authentication is required. Now the TS gateway mydesktop.schoolsdomain.sch.uk has a real proper Trustico Certificate, but obviously the actually Terminal Servers has an internally generated certificate from the domans Certificate authority.. the Cert is valid and working. even installing the root cert of my internal domain as a trusted root authority doesn't resolve it... Anyone tried RDPing yet from Win 7 via a TS gateway???

I don't get why they broke the setup though so you cant just through computer settings, software settings, deployed apps, attach the MSI and then give the the Transform you created... but that's another issue really... I got as far as making the deployed folder and MSP and i do like the way you can slap the patches in one folder and they get deployed too.. but what logic do you use to test to see if its been installed and if not install it... i read if you use startup scripts to push the setup you could (especially if you just ghosted a whole room) end up with the start-up script terminating because it took to long... and then office doesn't get deployed correctly.. would be interested to know how you initially push the setup... and the logic for it to auto deploy if the machine was ghosted and therefore not installed..

since we are on the schools agreement we have deployed office 2K3 everywhere. a select few teachers have 2K7. 2K7 is a pain to deploy unlike 2K3 hence I haven't done it. we use GPO and MSI deployment method for everything we can. I have deployed Open Office 2.2 and now 3 everywhere too since it to is easy to deploy.. though not found a good way of getting round the pesky registration... easily Unfortunately OO isn't used all that much, though I have started to use it more and more myself. I guess the staff and students tend to stick to what they know which is MS word. I wouldn't like to take MS office of people as I know apart from just being used by everyone it also forms a large part of the ICT carric at present. Though i would dearly like people to use OO more but its just never really happened.

I have two Cabs that are joined together via a trunk now assuming both switches on that Trunk understand VLANS. on each of these "Core" swithes i have another dumb POE switch (for the Wifi) so it should be possible to Tag on the Core switches the uplink to the dumb POE Switches as being a particular VLAN then all the APs on each of the POE Switches would be part of the same VLAN... What would you call the method that the two Core switches use to know that say VLAN_2 is on the two dumb POE switches on port x on Core Switch 1 and port y on Core switch 2. Do you think the Two Core Switches need to be Layer 3 or Will Layer 2 ones do (they seem to support VLANS) and if so do you know what terminology i am looking for?

when i moved folders in the past i used NT backup to backup and then restore them that way it keeps the security permissions I need to run something like that script over our folders because we have directory listing / traverse folder set for authenticated users all the way down the tree from home.-> yearjoined->Username and sometimes the kids think they have found a big loophole when they are browsing down someone else's folder structure... till i point out when they try and open a file or delete a file it goes access denied :-) Still i'd like to remove the Traverse right down at the Username Level..

We have L2 Netgear stuff and i too would like to look at segmenting the LAN into VLANs this summer or next anyone who has done this i'd appreciate some info too..

Thinking a little out the Box you could use some sort of TS to do this.. web App publishing via TS2008 perhaps.. though you would need the infrastructure there though. I see you decided to stick with VM fair enough... i have put Vista on my PC at work (and use this to manage my Hyper-V core server), and i run Virtual Server 2005 on it with XP for all the important stuff that doesn't run correctly in Vista ADUC Exchange Snapins i even do most of my GPO editing in XP since our workstations are still XP

I had a series of raptor 150s die in succession.. when i noticed more than one was exhibiting soft errors I bought a few spare in Good Job!! this is the problem when you buy a server... the drives serials are near as damit consecutive... you almost feel like you should buy one ever few weeks so they come from different batches and are less likely to fail within a short time frame of each other!

Do i read this right that if we upgrade / add a 2008 DC to the LAN (still 2003 R2 here) we get to push printers out using GPO using Group Policy Preferences and this works on XP clients etc... Do you just need to ensure the Group Policy Pref Client gets deployed from WSUS and Just need a 2008 DC or do you need to raise the whole forest / domain to 2008 Native? Thanks Gordon.

if all the different sub folders are on the same server then you would need a more complicated script that inspects the url the person typed in and auto forwarded to the correct sub folder eg if the put booking into address bar it would go 10.50.22.55/booking and say they put portal into the address bar it would go 10.50.22.55/portal you would need to set up cnames or a records pointing to the 10.50.22.55 server in DNS

you could pick up the stream on another PC with a TV card, providing Windows Media Encoder will grab the stream from the TV card.. this is how we broadcast Sky News and BBC News 24 around our School... then you can push or pull that the the Windows Media Server
