some one will correct me if i am wrong.. but i think this is a manual job really Assume PCs are XP should work in Vista too in an AD env. log onto the PC as the local Admin (not a domain acount it doesn't always work) 1) right click my comp -> Properties 2) Computer Name Tab press Change 3) chaneg the Name there.. (it will be reflected in AD) 4) when prompted for credentials pass a domain admins usr/pwd or at least someone who can alter computer objects. Reboot.. we name ours roomXXYY with XX being the room number ie 01 02.. 43 and YY being the PC number 01 02..99

this may be related or a similar issue of just deleteing the user profile from the %systemdrive%\users folder. there is a corrisponding registery tree as well as the directory and in Vista / 2008 TS if you remove just the directory you get the same error message.. perhaps the defualt user prof probs you are having is the opposite to this or maybe you need to assign eveyone rights to the appropriate part of the reg hive too.. cant remember where it is not at work any more but they are all listed under a folder called Profiles or something... interesting Delprof doesn't work either as it misses out cleaning this the registry part of the user profiles..

We use Sophos... I don't like it though its bloated & resource hungry. It is however very easy to deploy and manage. also our LA buys it in bulk so it costs us less than £200 a year for all our workstaions and servers! So i cant justify spending several thousand on our 500 odd PCs for another AV i personally like AVG though i haven't worked out how to easily deploy using the management console. <- a primary school i help at uses it.

we have the HP MiniNote 2133s used by nearly all year 7s here.. (yes thats one per pupil) run XP they come with 2GB of Ram but a Via C-7M cpu not so good as an Atom... though the 6 cell battery does mean they last the day. with the 120GB HDD plenty of space to partition of the PC and dual boot so it can be used at home safely too... they are fine for office net use etc... the kids haven't complained nor the staff.. they do have CS3 on though i haven't used it really. definitely no good for movie maker and the like.

you can store the copies on a different volume. not sure about server.. though if the drive was connected by iSCSI then maybe... Right click a drive on the server and choose Properties from there goto the shadowcopies tab select the volume you are interested in and choose settings and select the drive you want to store the copies on... you would need to disable the copies if you want to change the volume.. ie press settings and change the drive before pressing Enable.

Not that its the VB script.. but AD Modify will allow you to bulk change attributes and you can specify %'dispalyName'% in the description field and it will do what you want! AD Modify cant be run of a network drive you need to run it of local disk or it throws an exception when you start it.

if so could you share how you did it thanks ... My Core server runs hyper-v and since I have a diskeeper 2008 server lic for it I would quite like to use it

have you been through all the GPOs from the PC all the way up the tree to the top of the forest and checked to see if Computer Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Software Restrictions Has any policies applied to the EXE that is moviemaker Also it could be a user policy so you should check down the user policies to the effected user objects. User Configuration -> Windows Settings -> Security Settings -> Software Restrictions Though from what you have said it sounds more likely to be a computer policy. does it effect the local administrator account too?

Thanks for the reply guys. they were the sorts of issues I was worried about. I suppose you could replicate it but only allow referrals to one of the servers, for a backup copy you could bring on-line within seconds should the main server die. I'll go away and think some more anyhows.

This is where turning on Previous Versions is a life saver... ofcourse its no good on a pen drive but great foe home drives share

anyone know if it will be avalible for download anytime soon on Technet Plus? or if MS have said when it will be avalible to technet / msdn or VL subscribers... not that i have seen beta software on the VL service i have seen some on Technet Plus.

Hi Guys, just looking at budgets for next year, was considering getting a second home drive server and then using DFRS to load balance the home drives, i allready have everyones homedrive mounted via a DFS share and also already loadbalance the staff and students shared area and programs drive, which is usefull and works well especially good should you need to take a server down mid day in an emergency or such like. Has anyone used DFS loadbalancing on home drives before? if so any comments Gordon.

MS Schools agreement allows you to put Vista Enterprise/Business or XP Pro on any pc as long as it allready has a windows licence. this can be 3.11 / 95 / 98 / xp home / etc this is part of the Desktop Licence that costs you 23-35 quid per workstation per year

Could always use a Terminal Server and Remote Desktop via a TS Gateway. Or you could host the homedrive share on IIS and enable WEBDAV though Vistas WebDAV client is broken so it won't work correctly

HP make a few different Drivers, PCL and PostScript specifically for the Printer or their Generic / universal HP PCL Postscript driver, you could try a different driver see if that helps

I use it too, hosts a couple of servers including our Sharepoint Server (not the DB the Front End) and works really well. 10GB 2xQuad, Core based Xeons I setup Server2008 Core on it and it works fine, managment can be done from a Vista Workstation. I'd like to try clustering some... maybe next year next budget.

We do use sharepoint here. or MOSS 2007 more specifically. as our Intranet I like the fact that it ties in with AD, therefore its easy to setup permissions and groups. or change how the pages look to groups of users. On document Management its definitely better than 2003. the check-in and out functions work much better. I don't like the fact that I haven't worked out how to do an automated backup

If you travel from and too school then they should pay for the whole journey. If you travel too and from home, then they should cover the difference ie miles to course - miles to work = miles of reimbursement. I think that is fairly standard practise. Gordon.

in my enviroment i have rebuilt my base build using a XP With SP3 CD rather than deploy it. i will be deploying to other PCs in time but wanted to build a new image for our main labs for lots of other reasons. Gordon.

1) the new UXTheme patcher doesn't rest the security permissions correctly on uxtheme.dll in the system32 dir. once patched reboot and then login as an admin and add to the security tab users and power users with read and execute rights. Symptom was an Explorer.exe crash on login. 2) the Printer spooler service crashes when you add a printer (on logon via my VBS script) found an issue with the Driver PCL5 and PCL6 for the HP 4000 and HP 4050 Laserjets.. so far only resolution use the Apr 08 Universal Printer Driver I’m using the PCL5 one.

I'm Playing with 2008TS in the middle of getting it locked down. I'd like to get rid of the Fravorite Links and Folders from Explorer and other dialog boxes such as Open and Save. Has anyone done this before? i guess it would be the same in Vista but i just cant find the GPO setting i must be going Blind lol. Thanks Gordon

As long as windows knows about the controller before you move the boot drive you should be ok. I installed a new RAID card in a server installed the drivers then using ghost moved the whole image form one Raid array to another. ok they were only IDE raid to SATA Raid but it worked, at the same time i re-carved the Boot and Data partitions up. I think you won’t have a problem even just moving your C: Drive over to a new set of disks. i guess you can copy it over then make sure it works before using something like PQMagic to destroy the original c: drive and expand the data volume.

I begin to wonder if its actually worth having a virtaul DC because if you had a disater like this by simply resoring the VHD you would have a DC up and running again negating the need to do complex restore options.
