I'd say that website address that the minecraft launcher is trying to look for an update from, is being blocked by your firewall.

The problem I found with netbooks was that the users complained they were slow. Everyone expected them to be as fast as normal laptops, which they weren't. The best mini-laptops we found were the Lenovo X121e. I don't think they make it anymore but looking at their website they do other a new 11.4" mini-laptop with an AMD processor. Alternatively have you considered chromebooks? There's quite a few small and cheap ones made by samsung around for just under £200.

How about Nagios monitoring software? Runs on Linux. I prefer Ubuntu, as like Debian there's a wealth of knowledge online about how to achieve pretty much anything, if you look for it. I'm also currently looking at WPKG as a way of deploying exe based software across the network.

One of my schools has a HP Compaq 610 laptop and the touchpad has stopped working on it. USB mice work fine but just not the touchpad. There's no indication on the F keys as to whether one of them enables/disables the mouse and I've tried all of them unsuccessfully. HP seems to have no documention to indicate that an F key does turn on/off the touchpad. As part of upgrades to the schools laptops I've just reimaged it with Windows 7, so any pre-existing corrupted drivers can be discounted as I've reinstalled all drivers fresh. In Device Manager the touchpad appears and is working properly but in the Synaptics tool tab there is nothing detected. I've run out of ideas, Google has failed me and HP won't offer me any support because the laptop is now out of it's warranty period. Does this sound like a hardware fault or can anyone suggest something I've missed?

I've had this happen on teacher iPads with a Konica printer. As far as I can tell from hours of searching is that this is a problem with the OS and you'll have to keep manually changing it. If someone comes up with a solution to this it would be brilliant.

They are all standard build and don't include the systweaks software. That seems to appear once the teachers get their hands on them. No particular policies applied to the laptops. Staff have local admin rights for Sims. We currently use the standard RM SafetyNet web filter.

I'm noticing a lot lately that supposed registry cleaners/system cleaners/etc by a company called Systweaks keep appearing on school laptops. Does anyone know what software these are slipping in with or are they just downloaded through unsuspecting websites? If I can warn staff to steer clear of certain software downloads or websites it would mean a lot less time spent removing infected machines.

The font I found on the computer I looked at was called Sassoon Infants. Maybe it wasn't part of Office 2013 and someone had installed it themselves. I believe the school is licenced to use the Sassoon font, I just can't find it on the server anywhere!

Thanks for the info. I interited the fonts I was trying to install so I can't verify where they came from, just that they didn't work in smart notebook. The school is licenced for Office 2013 anyway so that font I used from the base package of office should be legit.

You could try LaptopsDirect. They've been pretty reliable for netbooks for me in the past. A search on their site brings up a couple of refurb models. Alternatively AsusLaptop are listed on the Asus UK page of official resellers. If you search their site for eeepc they've got one model in stock.

I used this guide How to configure a KMS server - Ivan Dretvic and set it all up on a Windows 7 VM. Works perfectly for office and windows activation. The only problem I have is that I'm having to manually add the IP of the KMS server as the DNS forwarding on the network isn't working properly. Probably something I've done wrong.

They should be able to but when I spoke to them on the phone I got the usual "oh, that is strange" comment and it just doesn't really inspire confidence! I'm going to try to get hold of an ipad and their tech on the phone at the same time and maybe we can get somewhere.

One school I work at has deployed Groupcall's Emerge software on their server and iPads. They are having a problem taking registers though as sometimes, completely at random, the current day will not be available in the registration list. They will be able to see the previous day and the next day but not the current day. This was temporarily worked around by forcing a resync between the app and the server, however this workaround now seems to have stopped working. I'm pretty sure that the app should automatically syncronise with the server every day so I don't know why sometimes it isn't. I've tried to speak to the technical team at groupcall but they seem as perplexed as I am and they obviously don't have any remote access to the ipads in the school to further investigate. Has anyone encountered this problem or can anyone think of anything I might try to resolve this problem? I'm guessing the whole setup works fine in other schools and there must be some configuration error in this school. This is the first school I've set this up in so don't have much experience to draw on in this instance.

At one of my schools they have a Samsung R40 laptop that will only boot after you press a key. There's no error message it just sits at the samsung splash screen and the backlight turns off. As soon as you press a key it boots as normal and everything works fine. I've tried updating drivers, installing Samsung display management software and changing the brightness control options in the BIOS, but nothing has worked. I can only assume a hardware issue now but apart from the backlight turning off and not booting until you press a key, everything else works fine. Has anyone encountered this behaviour before?

Unfortunately that is a problem of all Apple technology, but I have to try and accommodate what the school wants to do.

That's the general consensus that I've encountered so far. Most of the big players don't appear to be interested in incorporating proxy access into their apps and Apple obviously haven't made it easy for app developers to use the system proxy. I wondered if there were any dication apps that didn't require interenet access, but maybe that would make the app too large to work as an iPad app.

It's worth a shot I suppose. Anyone had any luck in getting this working through a proxy?

Can Siri be used to dictate to a notepad app of some sort? Does it need internet access, am I going to face the same proxy problems as Dragon Dictate?

I've been asked to find out if there are any diction apps available on iPad other than Dragon Dictate? We've already tried Dragon in the school but have had problems getting it to worth through the proxy. I've opened dozens of ports based on the advice on various other threads here but nothing has worked and I've had to call it a day on that app. Unfortunately I don't know of any others and everybody we've asked has always pointed us back to Dragon again. I think this might be a lost cause but I might as well ask.

Just to update everyone on what I've found out about this problem; Smart Tech have confirmed with me that Smart Notebook does not support Open Type Fonts, so even if they're installed they won't show up in the list. However I managed to solve the problem as Microsoft Office 2013 includes a Sassoon Infants TrueType Font which looks very similar (if not the same) as the OTF font.

I've just recently upgraded the teachers computers in a school to Windows 7. Everything went smoothly except the smartboards didn't work properly using version 10 of Smart Notebook so I've upgraded them all to version 11 of the software. However, since doing so the Sassoon Primary font that the school uses as default is no longer recognised by Smart Notebook. It appears fine in the font list in Word so I know that it's properly installed. Does anyone know of any issues that might affect Smart Notebook 11 and either the Sassoon Primary font or Open Type Fonts in general?

There's a factory reset button on the side of the controller board on the right hand side of the smartboard. You have to use a pen to press it. Alternatively it might be worth deleting the registry entries for the calibration settings. I can't remember the exact location of these entries at the moment, sorry, so you might need to google it.

Bear in mind the flooding in Thailand at the moment. With prices of HDDs soaring, SSDs are suddenly looking like a good option. It's a tough one to call because SSDs are still relatively new and untested in terms of lifespan.
