Hi all we recently campaigned sucsessfully to be moved out of our server rooms to another office due to excessive heat, noise etc and things are much better and i no longer go home with headaches. I have just found out that in the new shiny school we are having built due to merging with another one that i'm to be housed once again the server room! i have spoke with the gaffer and he suggests i put forward my arguments,( he supports me but worrys the architects etc won't) how many of you have to work in the server room and can anyone point me in the direction of hard evidence that we shouldn't be doing this? i ran a poll on a previous forum and was met with an overwhelming view that supported my argument but want your opinions please.

ah yes that works where were you three days ago outpost! many thanks anyway, incidentally a sims chap called this afternoon and confirmed this is a problem and that the above mentioned fix is the way forward. Now to try the sql migration...

i'm still having reason 2 problems within vmware basically i set up sims.net sql etc in a vmware machine and then tried to run sims.net from with in it and i get the reason 2 error sims don't seem to want to contact me as per normal.

adamc i can't get sims.net to work in vmware with invalid username /password errors what network settings did you select ? ie bridged, nat etc i'm wondering whether this could be the problem?
-
Hi all is it possible to merge two sims.net systems? we will merge with another school soon and will need to have only one mis system?
-
yeah thats the way i'm doing it but have not got it setup yet, did you copy your sims folder to the vm machine or jsut run the august setup and attach your existing sims.dbf?

is it having a problem creating the shorcuts if so log on as local admin?
-
any one using with impero does it work?
-
umm mine don't on xp sp2 (i havn't tried any other flavour), on vmware the ctrl alt del box comes on very quick after a restart but there is no mention of any scripts being applied , i created a simple bat file with a pause in to try and at least see it, then made sure my scripts were set to be displayed visible in AD but nothing?
-
should group policy machine start up scripts in vmware work? i'm testing and can't see to get any bat files to display? As always thanks in advance

ah i see, but bginfo.exe still is needed on each machine as opposed to a network share for the machine startup to work. I currently use bginfo via a login script and server share for all my users and it works well but not for machine start up.
-
jsnetman: can i assume then that you still had to go around and install bginfo on every machine first?
-
sorry mattx what i meant was if it *should* work then mine doesn't so was looking for another pointer. i read up some stuff on the bginfo forum last night and its almost impossible to troubleshoot this as a machine start up script. i am going to try it your way with one script calling another.
-
how do youinstall webmin?
-
so if i put this into a machine startup policy and copy the bginfo.exe to the netlogon share should that work? start bginfo.exe\\server\netlogon\CNCSWorkstations.bgi /timer:0 /silent /all /nolicprompt

ah i installed kubuntu-desktop when i recently installed ubunu server is there any massive differeences, between this and xubuntu-desktop i had a few performance issues, notwithstanding the two hours it took to download and install.
-
how does the machine know to point to the p: when it starts up though ? i tried to do mine through the logon share but again the machine does not look there at boot time does it?
-
Has anyone managed to get this working via a gpo for a machine startup script without deploying the bginfo.exe to all machines ? ie via a network share ?
-
Mark can i install lamp into the install via the boot cd i seem to remeber there being that option or can it be done within the gui?
-
to be fair i'm running it on my lappy in a vm using about 512mb of ram the lappy has a 1gb i think its a graphics issue and i can't install vmware tools on it as it says it can't find the right ones. a couple of quick questions (sorry i'm probally hijacking the thread). 1. i got kubuntu desktop installed working ok, does this give me access to all that ubuntu offers or is anything hidden away under the bonnet? the desktop is great and saves me having to mess with too much so i hope so. 2. is there a joomla installer for ubuntu? i want to try and set up the edugeek template stuff on here. thats all for now no doubt there will be a stack more as always thanks in advance.

rchilcott you need to go right click and choose view, filtering and take out the two ticks on only show things that can be fully managed, you will then be able to see the policy in all its glory.
-
funny old thing i too revisited ubuntu this week (i previously dumped it as i could never a gui to load.) i managed to get it all loaded and came across some commands that connected to the internet and downloaded kubuntu desktop along with all the nice bits and oieces like open office etc, i'm just having a play now but have to say it seems very slow.

they no longer send cds everything is updated via solus but when that fails they do make the setups folder available via ftp i so i imagine this is what would be needed, that said when solus downloads it creates those long nubered folders and then runs them via dbupgrade which effectively copys them to the setups folder proper and runs the sql statements (i think)
