Hi simon we thought about a commercial web based system like hotmail etc but worried that it wouldn't work sending large emails to internal users via these. also it brings into play things like if the internet goes down no internal email etc

cybernerd thanks that gives me a start FN i did consider it but thought that sbs had a 2gb ram limit so could reconsider once i get some prices. i just noticed the karoshi link up top is that for education only? i just had a quick peek at the functions of the single server setup and it seems to tick alot of boxes, is it free?

Hi all i'm working on a small project which involves an xp peer to peer network. My problem is that its hit the ten user limit machine when accessing data on the main machine and it looks like its time to start using client server technology.I would opt for windows 2003 rc2 and exchange server etc but the cost involved(i can't get educational prices for this project) makes it a little prohibitive. so i wondered whether i could go down the linux route?and if so what would be the best distro to use (there seems to be so many now). Ideally i want to be able to have more than ten people accessing one central location which will host data etc.I also want to be able to have an email server which will deliver internal email and give external access ala OWA. Can anyone point me in the right direction? some caveats: i'm a linux server noob and so ideally it will need to be gui driven. I searched the forums and googled for info specific to this and whilst there is lots of seperate info nothing that quite hits in on the head. Thanks as always in advance

you basic premise is spot on, you build a fairly high spec server, install O/S and SP's drivers etc then install vmware or MS virtual server and then you can add any number of servers inside flat files, which can then me moved around etc. the data is stored in virtual hard drives, which increases the size of the virtual machine or you can use networked drives etc. your best bet (picture paints a thousand words) download and install and play about, you will soon get the hang of it. At its most complex you can virtualise current physical servers and install something like esx and manage the lot via a web browser.

it has built in porn etc blockers though so could be useful in schools

Has anyone had any experience of upgrading there current windows 2003 sp1servers to server 2003 r2 i generally would never do an inplace upgrade but i want to take advantage of some of the features without having to entirely rebuild all my servers. solar winds do lan surveyor, its not free but there is a 30 day trial which could you give you a start point.

unistalled ie7 and it worked so am going to stick with that for now cheers.

hi all my mother in law has a dial up modem connected to bt yahoo she is getting an message after about two minutes of connection that says " isp does not support modem on hold" and disconnects, the modem is aztech and does not mention this feature anywhere in its setings or how can i disable it, broadband here is a non starter but how can i get rid of this crazy message is it a isp issue or should i try a new modem?

I have just been informed i needed to run domain prep on the second install even though it said during install that if i already have an exchange server on the domain i didn't need to can anyone confirm either i do or don't? it would make sense why i'm having the problems.

Hi all i just installed a second exchange2003 server as the first one is running low on space,(is this the best method???) all went ok i managed to move some mailboxes no problem and internally everything works great, my problem is that if i try and access webmail externally it fails for all those mailboxes on the new server? the users on the mail server still work ok. I think it may be something to do with the new server not having direct internet access through our county firewall but i was under the impression mail would be delivered via the first server with some sort of pass through? i'm reluctant to ask for more servers to be accesible from the net but don't what else i need to do. Any advice as always is appreciated.
