Hi All i have been using wsus for a while for my member servers and wired pc clients, i just pulled in all my laptops over summer to the windows updates as i previously did not want to degrade my wireless connection by pushing wsus updates down, i realise this is a little risky and now wish to revise this situation and start using wsus to update my wireless laptops of which i have around 160 my question then is does anyone else use this method does it have a detrimental effect on their network, is it even advisable or should i continue as i am doing? any advice as always gratefully recieved.

create new year groups in EASYTRACE BACKOFFICE
Uraken replied to Uraken's topic in How do you do....it?
ok creating the new year groups is easy enough Select 1 student for who you would like to add to the New year Group. Right Click on them and select ‘Edit’ Now ‘overtype’ the current year group with the new value and click ok. That’s it. New year group created. As for the other problem of adding the year six users to easytrace still no joy, i honestly cannot believe it is this difficult and i am seriously thinking of going elsewhere for my printing solution as a result of this can anyone recommend any good alternative providers? -
create new year groups in EASYTRACE BACKOFFICE
Uraken replied to Uraken's topic in How do you do....it?
Not sure it will be as easytrace are sims partners so they should integrate seamlessly although that's not my experience.. Post back if you get any relevant help and I will do likewise. -

Liveatedu/ office365 is the obvious choice I would have thought for your situation! Have you explored this avenue?

Try a different file is it the .zip it's having issues with?

Thanks Vikpaw i will take a look through this, i know this is not best practice, but given that this is a xen server with very little bloat, i am toying with the idea of an in place upgrade from windows 2003 server to windows 2008 server so that i can take advantage of more RAM, i'm just researching any gotchas at the moment.
-
thats a great start thanks did you say 64bit 2k8 ? or 32 bit ?
-
Yeah that is a good idea, did you document the sims move to the new server? could do with a heads up if you did?
-
Yes i did an in situ install so the old sql server 2005 was still present but i have turned off all the services etc (which did make a difference, i'm stalling on doing an uninstall as i have msde 2005 running for easytraces follow me print solution so don't wanna mess that up). The problem i have with the RAM is i am on 32 bit 2003 so 4gb is my limit, the xen host itself could be a bit full so that is somewhere i could start, along with turning the panels off as you suggest. I will take a look at the links that you have posted and hopefully things will improve. Thanks for your comprehensive reply and suggestions, most appreciated.

Hi all my sims server is currently given me a load of grief, maxing the processor. Its on a Citrix xen virtual server with 4 vcpus and 4gb of RAM and it appears that this problem only really started to surface when we upgraded the sql install from sql 2005 to sql 2008. I am presuming that sql server 2008 is more resource hungry and i need to fine tune the performance. Does anyone have any tips for ensuring best possible performance both from a sims point of view and a sql server 2008 point of view? i have ran through some maintenance tasks in sql server but to be honest its a bit of guess work at the moment.. Thanks in advance

"I hope the Muppet enjoys his new career path at Asda." Why should ASDA have to put up with the idiot (although i take your point).. This will hopefully send out a strong signal that this behavior should not be tolerated!

Guys thanks for your help with this i have server 2008 and have never come across a block mac address feature in dhcp so i a off to do some reading, i really appreciate everyone's input into this thread. regards uraken
-
Thats how i would of thought it happened but this does not explain the dhcp leases also what protocol dooe sit use? if its tcp surely it must have an ip to do this?
-
Hi all i am probably being really 'fick' here but can anyone tell me definitively what happens first when an ipod/iphone device connects to the network. Does it get issued an ip address from dhcp and then have to authenticate via any wireless security or is that it has to authenticate before it gets an ip. I ask because my dhcp server is filling up with iphone/ipods and i can't imagine them guessing ir being told the wpa keys. As always thanks in advance for any help. Uraken

Hi all i have mcafee AV 8.5 and am using epolicy ochestrator, when we rolled out mcafee to the work stations for some reason it seems that the access protection was not included, does anyone know if i can 'add' it to the clients on the network (mostly xp) without having to visit each machine and do a fresh install with the access protection enabled this time around? as always thanks in advance. hello all does any one have any advice about how i can block/hide access to sd cards on student laptops, we have blocked the use of usb pen drives but clearly they can circumnavigate this restriction with sd card usage. ideally the solution will be apllied at gpo level (windows 2008)

looking for good citrix xen server support
Uraken posted a topic in Thin Client and Virtual Machines
Hi all we have a very good citrix set up here, but as is often the case the chaps that set it up are so busy (setting up other folks really good citrix setups) it is impossible to get instant answers to the growing questions we have. does anyone know a company that offer telephone support (maybe on a price per ticket basis??) so that i can ask questions on thinghs like upgrades, migrations etc etc. thanks in advance
