Hi all i have shortcut to a folder which is mapped f:\staff i have created a shortcut to this on their desktops and users can access this no problem, but when they want to access it via word , excel etc they get accessed is denied? once word is open i can type the path to the folder ie \\servername\sharename and it opens no problems so why not through the shortcut mapped drive?

hi all i have built a stripped down version of windows 98 (ripped out all its guts etc iexplorer and all the other crap)and changed the shell so that it bypasses explorer.exe and loads a remote connection straight to a terminal server this works really well and means i can re use old machines and nobody is any the wiser that they are are windows 98. My problem is though when i want to use a wireless network card it baulks even though all the drivers are ok and when i load windows 98 normally it will work? i suspect its because of the way it loads i have by passed the loading of the driver ? or the wireless utily? can anyone help? do i need dos drivers and do i need to load them in config.sys or something ? its been years since i messed with anything windows 98 so i can't figure it out. I have a fall back of using a wired network but would quite like to have both thanks in advance

Just spotted a problem with above: these shortcuts are located on a shared area refered to as f: so if i want access this shorcut i browse to f: click on the new shorcut and it works well however when i go to file save a document in word, excel etc these shortcuts no longer appear?? so i can't open them to save anything in there??

create a new ou and pop the user into it(connected to existing ou to allow for existing permissions to filter down) )and lock it down further by a new group policy specifically there is a setting that allows you to specify what application are allowed to run. Also think about redirected start menus to hide shortcuts.

Almost This is a folder on the same drive as sims (server space issues, don't ask) so i want users to access s:\folder but not be able to travese , i have just managed to crack it. here is some syntax. %windir%\explorer.exe /e,/root,\\servername\share this opens the folder and makes it the root so they can no longer traverse through that server.

Your quite right stewart, and was the first thing i could think of whilst joining a forum years ago it sort of just stuck and have used it ever since.

I just wanted to add my two penneth worth to this converstion, in my experience someone who is unsafe with his/her own knowledge base is one that won't share any info about there setup (there worried you'll make them look bad) you should accept this as a compliment to your own skills and knowledge and keep proving your worth sooner or later they will learn to work with you and accept your obvious value for the good and benefit of the entire establishment. i know thats easier said than done when your in the the thick of it but keep plugging away it'll work out.

Hi i'm Adi Forum Admin over at the 'rival forum' and wanted to share with you a post i recently posted on technet.org.uk "When i started technet.org.uk way back when, i did it because for the life of me i could not find another forum of its kind that could answer the questions that i had, about sims pars and other school stuff etc. I discovered today that there is a very well established forum by the name of edugeek which if you havn't been too then go take a look as it looks very useful(i'm not suggesting you abandon technet.org.uk on the contary but i certainly have found very good info on there)."
