hi all i just ran my first RIS riprep which went ok with no error and then tried to restore back to the same machine everything looked fine in terms of the machine being formatted etc but when it restarted i get disk boot failure? where do i begin in terms of fault finding where it went wrong is there a log file? any one else had this happen?

bishopsgarthstockton this does not work have tried this as soon as i log off it goes back to 'bliss' Ric we use bginfo its great as we can also use it to check out who logged on and what time but this is delivered via login script thus after ctrl alt del. quackers tried your way, set the bitmap to blank bingo. thanks all for your help and for ric for making network geezers day.

yeah it was local policy, although nothing was set so i disabled it forced update bingo thanks for your help all.

hi all how can i change the windows background at the ctrl alt del window? one machine in our network has the 'bliss' style background, which i think is the default windows one, even though we have force classic via gpo and when i log on and check its set to classic locally as well, its not so much a problem it just looks a little odd in trhe classroom.

i have just installed ie 7 on my work machine getting ready for mass deployment but how is that tab browsing is available at home but not at school ? am i missing something both home and work are xp pro sp2.

great so i can stop banging my head against the wall and ask how you do it Tony, like i say i have it set up but really want to deliver complete images.

Can someone please tell me whether wds/ris can be used to deploy a complete image of a base machine ie complete with office, sims etc, i have it ris set up but its no use to me if it can't deliver prebuilt images or have to fath with msi installs etc, i'm loathed to buy ghost but other than some open source stuff this seems to be the only thing that will do this?

Thanks john i had dhcp server installed but non-fuctional pxe and ris automatically search for local dhcp if it finds one it looks no further but my dhcp server was on another server so i removed the non-operational one and bingo.

a quick question, my ris refuses to play at work, (i have it working at home so i have the fundamental knowledge to get it set up) pxe is ok but does not get past dhcp message, i have a dhcp server but not on my ris server does this make a difference or will pxe lok for any dhcp server?

not sure i understand mate? i have managed to create a ghost boot image and serve it via pxe but i can't see the network?

Hi all i have a ris server set up on which i want to be able to load a universal network boot disk and map a drive to a ghost image and be able to load it on to a bare machine via PXE has anyone any knowledge on this? Symantec suggest doing it using ghsot cast server but its over complicated, i looked at partimage is not ghost but could not get the drive mapping to work i desperately want to have a way of distrubuting an image to our machines. thanks in advance

if you buy a domain from some isp lets say http://www.kyle.co.uk than you should also get mail lets say [email protected] now normally your isp will host your website so you just upload your stuff via ftp to them, and they supply you with pop email settings so you can configure outlook, so they basically handle your email for you and forward it to your pop acount as and when you click send and recieve. your isp do this via something called mx records so all you need to do is set up exchange server on a server with a static public ip address or using a dns forwarded ip address from someone like mydns .org and have your isp change the mx records for your domain, it then becomes a catch all addresss so that if someone sends to [email protected] or anything else at @kyle.co.uk exchnage server catches it and distributes it to your configured users. usually when you buy a domain and hosting from an isp they give you access to a control panel for your domain and the chances are the settings are in there.

fair play to you phil for coming along and running the gauntlet on behalf of Sims but if we don't tell you when your getting things wrong how can you learn from us and make your product better ( this has to include support), my point was that i was a little disapointed when you said its not a simple install and that you recommend a days service, surely the idea is to provide a working document or a simpler install, that said i do appreciate the complexitys of the product but this appreciation is not shared by SMT etc that want the installs done seamlessly out of hours and without glitch, read the forums this simply does not happen. There was a radical shake up two years ago at sims support during the time when web support was implemented and i was contacted direct by one of your head honchos and things seemed to be going well but we can't all be wrong can we?

whats the cost implication on drive image it can't be free surely but the website suggests it is?

i downloaded aik via the deployment work bench but came to a grinding halt now.

incidentally are you creating and deploying xp images with this?

okay mate will do. I have downloaded the .img file from M$ so will get cracking.

"We do recommend purchasing a service day to install the necessary MS software that Mobile requires - it is not as simple to install as SIMS" are you serious phil! you create and sell software and then want to charge people to have it installed? hows that work then? and i agree jamie sims helpdesk needs a shake up ( i don't normally slate anyone in their work but the service is and has not been up to speed for a long time).

as long as you can to speak to your isp mate you will be very surprised how easy it is to set up exchange server. Get your self a test domain with email for about a tenner a year and fully test it and don't forget we're all here to help you.

we no longer user fms so am not sure how you update it, do you access solus via sims.net interface? or via a solus stand alone shortcut? Are your FMS login details different to your sims.net login details? if so try using sims.net logon details because the indication on the error message is that the credentials are not liked.
