Now that both my daughters are at university I've a good idea of what can be saved. Normal spend for us (taking into account that Daughter 1 has to eat a low fat diet for medical reasons) was around the £100-£125 a week mark. We had our Visa statement yesterday and our supermarket bill has fallen to around £35-£40 per week. We don't unfortunately see any of this saving as it goes on the upkeep of our daughters.

The fountains outside the Bellagio are quite something in the evenings. If you're taking children you can always take them to M 'n' M World. It's a while since I was last there and things change so quickly in Vegas. A stroll around the Venetian, or any hotel on the strip, is a cheap way to pass the time. I found the Grand Canyon literally too big to take in, the scale is unbelievable. I've never been to a place quite so beautiful as Yosemite and I'm extremely jealous of you, especially as (I assume) you'll be experiencing it for the first time. If you're staying in the valley take the time to go out at nightfall to check out the night sky. The number of stars in the sky is simply awe inspiring. If you're a keen photographer there's also the Ansel Adams Gallery to take the wind out of your sails. You'll have a great time. I've done that on her behalf, and despite Moodle icon indicating that it was a Show, the file opened in PowerPoint. Saved it in both 2003 and 2007 formats without any joy. The only solution I've so far found is iSpring, but as this only free for personal use, and not academic use I need to find a cheaper way of doing it.

A teacher has created an interactive PowerPoint (2007) which she's saved as a Presentation so that pupils can't simply go to the last slide and find the answer. However, when she uploads it ot Moodle (1.9.7) it shows the Presentation icon but when you click to open it, it opens in PowerPoint, defeating the whole point of the exercise. Is there any way of getting it to open as a Presentation? I didn't mean Presentation, I meant PowerPoint Show. My apologies.

@hakko I hate to get on your case here (geddit?) but PCs in schools don't get "light use". In fact I would suggest quite the opposite, that PCs in business get "light use". When I managed a few business networks I tended not to find that keys had been prised loose from the keyboard, that face plates had been ripped off and the odd pencil thrown in to see what it would do. Though I did enjoy seeing the consequences of one boy changing the voltage on the back of a PC whilst it was switched on. The PC was a write off, but the boy survived. I don't recall seeing much of this type of thing in business as the result would be loss of job. In a school the culprit may get a detention, and return to carry on damaging our PCs. Our IT suites tend to be used during the holidays for such things as revision classes and other projects, which admittedly can be a pain as we can usually only carry out major tasks during school holidays, and we sometimes have to limp along until we have the available time.

We have this up and running in our school. It's all Flash video and rather like YouTube etc you can embed the videos in your VLE. This was initially a very popular purchase, but it appears to have fallen by the wayside despite constant updates. It's very well laid out and easy to navigate.

Look at the way choice is laid our for you on Sky Movies for example. You don't simply get a long list of the movies on that evening, in order to guide your choice Sky has placed the movies in categories in order to help you make a choice. Similarly when a teacher asks us to source a product or service the choice we give them is constrained by price, and they choose the optimum within that range. On the other hand, the internet being the egalitarian world it is offers so much choice that after a while you tend to self-censor your choices otherwise you'd suffocate under the weight of choice. We limit choice for our pupils by having white lists and black lists. In our school the techies inform choice by advising those teachers who approach you with a new piece of software that they might consider buying the network version rather than asking us to install it on 500 machines. All choice is constrained by the circumstance of our situation. What we are beginning to offer pupils now via the Learning to Learn programme is the ability to make their own informed choices, to play a greater role in their own learning by teaching them the skills to analyse and assimilate useful information whilst discarding that which is worthless. The choice with BSF is not to take it or leave it, as I believe that battle, if it ever was one, has been lost, but to make sure that within the constraints of BSF we work towards broadening the choices available to the school body. Choice has always been available for those who can afford it.

Perhaps if more companies were to ask the folk on here to try out beta versions of their software we might think about some sort of charge or donation perhaps, but so far this is a one off; let's encourage them to to turn to us for technical advice, by helping them we help ourselves.

It fails to open even logged in as admin.

I have a problem with Jing installed on one teacher machine. When a teacher goes to start the program it appears that nothing has happened, so they click on the icon again only to be told that the program is already running. Task Manager (Win XP Pro) confirms this. I've uninstalled the software, rebooted the machine and re-installed only for the same problem to reoccur. I assume that something is set in the registry which is preventing Jing from running as it should. Has anyone come across this, and if they have, how have you solved it?
