From the slideshare FAQ - "Activation is handled automatically, so there is no exchange of 'keys' per se Office 365 ProPlus is automatically activated by KMS services." So if Dad logs in and wants to type a letter to the bank, the child has to log in to o365? Will having 2 copies of office 2013 on the same machine be an issue? Or will they just avoid it all and retain bad practice - one single admin user account on the pc!

@jamesbmarshall with many PCs (particularly ones school children can access) being shared with parents/siblings in the same home, will other users be able to use office suite too (i'm thinkin specifically where multiple profiles are held on the same pc). Will office just need to be activated once by the child (and subsequent validation checks) but available to all users (ie no registration for dad)?

1) Check your domain controller logs for account changes. That should pinpoint the machines and account thats doing it as well as the time. 2) Then check the processes running on the target machine. 3) Run RSOP to see if theres a group policy applying to set the local admin password

we use their own web portal for teachers. I have (as AngryTechnician has) created my own functions on SQL to monitor registration/attendance completion. Their latest update rehashes the way timetables are stored, so it looks like most of the work is out the window and I'll have to redo it (comes with the territory)

I found a (practically useless) solution to this. It's to do with the time/date on the apple tv once it loses power. If you keep the device powered (or even sleeping), and reconnect to the wired network to allow it to contact an external ntp server (apples i'm guessing), once its date/time is updated, wireless kicks back in. Surface (preordered) like many have said, is a direct ipad competitor and priced less expensively. Combined with o365e then it's pretty much got everything tied up. I've been running win8 enterprise on a samsung series7 tablet for a while. Its good. Then I installed DirectAccess 2012. All I can say is 'wow'. ticks all the boxes that your SMT/middle management have been moaning about, and ipads cant deliver. (watch the goal posts move when they find out their ipad toys arent the answer) Win8 on the SS7 really came to life. Its a bit like lync - you think it's just another gadget/gizmo but once you have it, you really cant live without it and it makes everything else feel outdated. I actually feel physically disconnected now when i use my desktop PC at home and cant access work (although I have remote desktop, VPN etc). Connect using the directaccess enabled device and it's like the world is complete again.

Interface seems hung up at the moment. We're using the aplle VPP but we want to retain ownership of the apps/books we purchase. The only way to do this, apparently, is to use the profile manager to check in and out the devices - retaining the codes to us, but allowing the users to log in with their own id's and download their individual apps. The downside is that you can only have the device managed by one MDM (so we're told) and means we have to ditch meraki. We can issue redemption codes for paid apps, but once they're issued, we cant get them back and issue to a.n.other.

OCS wasnt a PBX replacement. Lync is. We've been running it for almost a year now (summer '11 install). The feature that high on the 'what do i need that for' list, was presence. Now when you ask staff what they like most, you guessed it, is presence!

new Lync clients for WM and android are very slick. Just waiting on iPhone, iPad, Nokia symbian and BBerry clients. No VOIP or video (yet?) but very slick.

We used polycom cx200 handsets (USB) at around £80+vat each. cx500 model is only £20 more expensive and used as our common area phones exactly what we've done. also got a bunch of microsoft lifecam HD's for £25 each - bye bye skype

For staff its included in the ees agreement. if you go enterprise voice, you need to add that as a plus cal (ours was £4.06 per staff member) If we move pupils to office 365 we dont have to pay for their exchange external access and we could offer them lync at 0 cost (have staff onsite, pupils offsite)

I'm replacing our aging surfcontrol box and moving to TMG. Does anyone have any recommendations for reporting on usage etc? I know there's reports built in but they don't quite give the level of detail required. TIA J

Tried a search but its broken, so apologies if there's another Lync thread i've not spotted. Anyone else installed (or upgraded from OCS)? We had a small pilot running last year which worked well, and integrated enterprise voice over the summer. So much simpler to use than the old meridian/nortal system we had. The head perfromed a job interview with an applicant in Spain and it worked well. Vocemail/UM features working well. Federation is a doddle and works really well. I dont think I could go back to using a standard 'old style' phone system.

Spotted that along with InputDirector in the comments under tha article. I'd never heard of either and don't have to worry about OSX (yet) or *nix boxes (which you could argue (or not) is one and the same!)

How does your ICT structure work in your independent school? Typically in business, ICT would sit high up on the board (ie CIO). Many schools dont have CIO's, Directors of ICT and only have IT Managers (with the work being almost identical) or Network Managers (depending on the size of the school). With ICT being increasingly required 24/7 (email, staff parent and pupil portals, websites), ICT is becoming arguably the most important service in a school. If ICT were to be withdrawn from schools, teaching would still continue - the hardest hit (IMO) would be the business side - yet ICT is still looked upon a solely a support service for teaching. Will attitudes change? Can a direct line to the top (or puting your ICT Director/CIO on the SMT) help? Or will the position be resigned to work for the Bursar or an academic? thoughts
