  1. Sorry - yes - print spooler. 2 trains of thought really. 1) dodgy drivers and other 'issues' can cause the print spooler service to hang, stop etc thus making it difficult to connect to printers from the remote machine or the machine thats hosting the printer. 2) guesswork - its possible the service has been stopped by malware/spyware/virus (conficker?)
  2. Is the spooler service running correctly on the machines?
  3. MS is to pull the plug on Encarta on 31st October 2009. Important Notice: MSN Encarta to be Discontinued - MSN Encarta and Microsoft kills MSN Encarta • The Register
  4. Also - your security logs (event log on domain controller(s)) should show you which workstations are attempting to log in repeatedly.
  5. We've got Sunbelt Software VIPRE and have our DNS set to forward to OpenDNS. Touch wood *knock knock* we've been relatively clean from viruses for some time. Once in a blue moon a browser hijack gets picked up but it's quickly cleaned out.
  6. We have the same setup, but let WSUS deploy the updates - SCCM holds the setting and config for the clients. Once the clients see the WSUS, WSUS dictates the updates/auto-updates.
  7. I'm begining to hate working in education. Too many teacher/lecturers that think they know it all because they surf the net until midnight reading about how to snaffle videos from youtube. "Copyright? It's ok - we're a school" "But why can't I download from iPlayer and burn it to DVD?" *sigh* A little knowledge (too little!) is a dangerous thing. Very grateful to have found some like-minded IT folks!
  8. evening all I'm currently working in ...erm... Dundee. Nuff said iused to work with Tosh in a real city though (shame it was a crappy employer though )
  9. Smart sent us a solution as it was still happening after the SP4 upgrade. It's to do with the registry setting in "HKLM\SOFTWARE\SMART Technologies\SMART Board Drivers\Machine". The DWord "PowerButtonAction" needed to be set to 0.
  10. 3Com used to have a RIS menu editor freely avaible. It was discontinued and emBoot released it. emBoot were subsequently taken over by DoubleTake and pulled it It's the only one I've seen (free)
