posted this in the other thread, but it is kind of off topic Download details: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2010 Update 1 There's a lite touch step by step in there. Basically create your task sequence in MDT and import into SCCM using MDT 2010 update1 i had a bit of hassle with the region settings too - but i was updating the wrong files.... Will dig them out

I've just migrated 300+ PCs from xp to win7 using config manager. nice being able to sit back and watch it go One thing to watch out on with the power management reports (I'd logged this during the RC but it was too late to be changed). When/if you change the paramaters on the reports, mage sure that any value (in particular CO2) that is to more than 3 decimal places isn't saved as 0.00 ie CO2 is given as 0.015. I changed the KW on the report from 0.09 to 0.07 but didn't notice that the CO2 value field was also only 2 decimal places. It displayed correctly (well - to two decimal places it was correct!) as 0.00 and when the parameters are saved, it saved as 0 so all the reports have 0 values. Anyway - MDT and SCCM Grab the print ready documentation for MDT2010 Update 1 Download details: Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2010 Update 1 There's a lite-touch walkthrough in it which I made a couple of small tweaks to and used it to migrate our XP boxes to win7 capturing the user profiles.

Yo may find that removing AD (and if it uses SQL) that the server gets a new lease of life and you would be able to live with it still hosting your file shares. IIRC there is a file and share migration utility in 2008 server but you'll still need to change your drive mappings etc. DCPROMO will take care of the DNS server for you. IIRC you can rename your AD controller ok - its the domain names that are a pain. I'd be inclined to give it a new name (school-dc01) if you can live with it. once the migration is complete rename the old box (school-files01) if need be, you can setup a DNS entry for the old DC to point to the new one.

Its a bit of a waiting game with the power managment reports. Make sure it's enabled in the client agents (site settings -> client agents -> power management client agent) Change the hardware inventory to a day (mine was at 7 days) to get some information collected - change back later if its reporting too much. check the client agent version on your site reports (sms site - client information -> count sms client versions) Most of mine have updated from 4.00.6487.200 (SP2 with R2) to 4.00.6487.2153 (SP2 with R3)

Was using RC (unsupported). I'd imagine the trial would go on fine - once it's done either upgrade to full, or uninstall through control panel.
-
Have been running it for a few weeks. Worth it alone for the power management additions.

Excellent! one of those annoying "I must find out where that's gone, but I dont really have the time just now and it's not critical" issues

Is your 'upstream server' error message a pop-up dialogue from a screen, or logged in an event log? The only place I can see an 'upstream update server' is on the second tab of the component configuration->software update point component properties Ours is set to 'synchronize from Microsoft Update'. All very strange!

Office 2010 (volume license version) comes with a KMS key built in and activates automatically. We use VAMT to apply a KMS key to Win7. We can them KMS activate them, again in VAMT. VAMT Download: Download details: VAMT 2.0 Using VAMT (docx): Download details: Product Activation Using VAMT 2.0

Updated Ribbon Hero -
I wonder where it thinks you're using an upstream server? it's not 'activate software update point on remote server' thats enabled is it (mine is greyed out). port numbers are the same as the wsus admin page - although I don't have 'enable ssl for this wsus server' enabled on my software update point component properties.

Using the Smart Install Manager package you can set it to install the gallery locally, copy from a network location or share from a network location (i think - thats off the top of my head) Get it from here - expand the 'administrator downloads' section as well as the gallary files. This is how I've installed it: From WSUS and SCCM 2007 on Same Server
-
I've rebuilt my wsus/sccm box a couple of times and always had them working without much (if any) hassle. Once wsus is installed, we tell sccm which updates to and products to download (the 'ticks' kept disappearing from the wsus console) and the settings stick. Settings are in sccm->Site Settings->Component Configuration->Software Update Point Component Reports and approvals are still done in WSUS. Not sure if that helps any!

[ms office - 2010] Office 2010 are you using it yet or are you planning to?

Skip 2007 if you have any choice - 2010 runs much better. It's pretty, but slow (compared to 2010) -

I know - export and import time. tbh it's the only thing thats making me hesitate -
Asset and hardware/software inventory in MS SCCM does the trick for us (along with OS and app deployment). It's peanuts if you've got a schools agreement as the desktop cal's include it. R3 is going to include a lot of power management controls and reports. The only thing it's lacking is licence enforcement which they removed from config manager 2003(?) But it uses a client. I've used BrowseControl in a previous life and it was quite good. Pricey at the time i'm not sure if it's changed much BrowseControl - Value Added Distributor for Symantec, Altiris, Credant, IT Security and Desktop Management Solutions in the UK and Ireland

we have a custom ms access program which reads our pupil mis, creates accounts (and stores the logon in a network database). It does groups and email addresses at the same time (although it was written for Phoenix Gold, AD2000 and exch 2003 and now we're WCBS Pass, AD2008 and Exch2010). it was straight forward enough in VBA. For reporting, intranet class-lists and pupil info all had areas for network logon and default password was the same for all pupils (change on first logon).

We use pcounter to monitor print usage, but that only covers our network printers. there was a 10 workstation software giveaway/promo at some point but we havent activated it (although we should). we've moved a lot of printers to networked ones but the added benefit of pcounter is we have swipe cards on our general access photocopiers (colour and mono) which pcounter monitors/controls also.

Well - windows 7 and office 2010 has been a breeze (SCCM). Migrated our exchange 2003 to 2010 and BES 4 to BES Express. External domain name and emails changed. Sharepoint sites changed for domain rename and new certificates applied to sharepoint and exchange 2010 sites. and HP Multipoint kit should be arriving in the next day. Then I may consider the domain rename -
[ms office - 2010] Convert text column of dates to date values
jc1875 posted a topic in Office Software
Usually I faf around with dates, extracting the day value, month value, concatenate etc. The once it's in a nice format, it usually sticks as text instead of changing nicely to a date field (right aligned etc) Strangely it changes correctly when you click on a cell, then hit return. Thats ok for a few cells, but not an entire SPL fixture list Found this tip. Select the column of values (take your concatenated date string and paste as a value) Bang - column formatted. -
I thought I'd erad a post that the duncan mackenzie service had stopped working. obviously fixed now another avatar pic i'd missed - the small avatar http://avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar//avatarpic-s.png so http://avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/jonty/avatarpic-s.png gives http://avatar.xboxlive.com/avatar/jonty/avatarpic-s.png
