NO - NO - NO The IT equipment in schools exists to serve the education of children - whether by assisting teachers to do their job or to help with directly educating children in the classroom or as a means to provide students with core ICT skills....... For far too long, staff and students have been the slave of the IT setup - it must be the other way round because the minute that IT makes life more difficult rather than easier, is the minute we need to order a skip to dump all those computers into so we can use the space and resources they take up for better purposes. As IT professionals it is our responsibility to make technology as accessible as possible and to ensure that the teachers in the front line of delivering education have the confidence and skills to use IT in appropiate means - that also means that we need to ensure that what we are delivering meets the actual need and not some hyperthetical need that we percieve........ Hello .... What planet are you living on ???? La la land ? Listen mate.. how long have you been in ICT is schools for ? beacuse we try to give the best but then we hit a big snag... It's called Teachers who find it difficult to log on let alone using up to date technology.... So please don't preach to me.. untill you've been on the front line

From the BBC News website.... Looks as though even if the school is shut the Bills still get Paid so the Managed Services Contractor still gets Paid... even though there is no useage.. 8O MPs warn over £45bn schools plan The government should take stock of plans to rebuild England's secondary schools before rushing into a series of costly mistakes, MPs have warned. The Commons Education Committee says there are risks linked to the method chosen to fund half the £45bn rebuild - the private finance initiative (PFI). Three PFI schools are closing because of a lack of pupils, but councils are still contracted to pay the bills. The government said it had learnt lessons and was improving procurement. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6935505.stm

They do not use SIMS on the Laptops as every classroom has a Teacher PC, the satffroom has 4 PC's and Ecah Departmental Office has 4 PC's for the staff to use... The Staff use Bromcom Winfolder on the Staff PC's for Registers.. If every room on the site has a PC in whats the use of Laptops on site ? nothing reallly so they take them home..

Our staff users only have 3 letters in their logon and SIMS demands 4.. so how will it work ? KB71595 - SIMS Connection failed for login USERNAME reason 7 Having other issues though now with the main server upgrade :? Hoping its related to using remote desktop ...... we will soon see. I did mine remotley and it worked fine

I have it downloaded but I'm holding off installing for now because I need (want) to do the Personnel conversion first and test that before I launch into the one that could go tragicly wrong. Anyone installed it yet? HBJB Ye sI installed it and it went OK.. When the user logs on for the first time it tries to update Adobe Reader...which fails as the users has no rights... But SIMS is OK

It's Free Subscription, £100 for the box and £30 for the installation.. they will install within the week as mine is going in tomorrow..

We give the staff a Laptop and a 256mb Flash drive... thats all... If they do work on the laptop they use the Flash drive to transfer the files to the school servers.. The reason it's only 256 is that we find that the staff will fill a 512 or 1gb flash drive and copy it all to the server.. than they will do it again repeating most of the stuff they have copied before... so we give them small Flash drive. The backing up of their laptops os thier problem... We also do not allow the staff laptops onto the Domain.. they are kept as stand alones.. Much better this way

Well I have wondered this before but the RBCs hand out these subnets so I guess its ok (though I strongly suspect our RBC makes its decisions via magic eight-ball). However I work in the Primary phase where 254 IPs is ample so never tested it So it looks like you are behind a server that hands out private address independent of the RBC? I will echo sparky's question about the choice of subnet - just interested really I Inherited it... What would you suggest the IP range and subnet mask to be ?
-
I keep doing that and it says it cannot access the folder ? Please can you pM me on how you did that....

Thanks for the input guys.. 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.3.254 sn 255.255.252.0 and I am running out of IP addresses as I only have around 1024 IP addresses And I need to go to 255.255.248.0 = 2048 Hosts or 255.255.240.0 = 4096 hosts I am not Sub Netted off of any other Network My question was how do I expand the scope as I would have to change the SN mask and it would be OK on the PC's but on the static addresses I would have to manualy change the SN Mask which wuld be a bitch to do.. Any ideas :-)

Which is better for Backup to Disk, Open Files, Open SQL, Remote Servers ? NovaBACKUP? Acronis? BACKUPASSIST? I have Backup Exec 11d and Terastation Pro 2tb Problems Contacted Buffalo.. and they say. That it doesn't work from a Windows 2003 Server. That it doesn't work with Backup Exec 11d, as Backup to disk doesn't work with an IP .. That the mapping with UNC mostly can't be by name and has to be with IP.. So any suggestions appreciated. I bought this 2tb bix to be the backup to disk server with Backup exex.. How can this done ? Is there a decent Backup software that does Open files and Sql Databases (sims and stuff) that can work with the Terastation ? Is there a way to make the terastation work with server 2003 .. and if not what suggestion could you make to get the files from the 2003 file server backed up onto the terastation ? Plus SIMS on a 2003 Server 8O
