We have a 3COM 4060 Fibre Core Switch.. Solid as a rock 12 MTRJ Fibre Ports 6 GiG Ethernet Ports and 6 GBIC Fibre Ports.. All working and ready to go no adding blades or anything (apart from GBICS) Cost around £5000 This is 2 years old so I am sure there is an upgrade.. http://www.3com.de/pdf/sw4060_dsheet_engl.pdf The reason we got this is that ther Cisco switches were not value for money.. over priced and over hyped... 3COM and HP have good just as and if not better than CISCO at a much lower price...

How long before the BSF rolls in ?

I agree with Matt.. and I think he was very to the point and constructive 8) And I am very disappointed with the way Sophos handled it…. What d1sgusts me even more is that Matt was in dialogue with their developers/engineers and they didn’t even have the decency to respond to his problems with their software…

Hi I personally think the new Sophos is rubbish.. Why Is hard to install Many Installations fail It's hard to manage When you install it on a local PC and add it to the domain,, you then have to go into Sophos and add the PC to the group (why?) Why is every old PC that is no longer on the Network listed is Sophos The simplicity of V4 installation has gone and you now have this monster that you have to keep on monitoring.. My points... Now is that libellous?

It seems they kinda set you up.. maybe the copies of posts that were sent to Dos_Box were the ones that you sent to the development team...

It may be that person's opinion, but it could still represent a libel if that opinion is untrue or cannot be substantiated. Edugeek is not a hermetically sealed community, we're not discussing things over a beer in the pub, "just between the two of us", but for the most part we have a large audience. It is not slander or Libel is a a person expresses his own opinion... And that was the opinion expressed by someone because he thinks that a product is pants. It should say at the bottom of the board that the opinions expressed in this forum are not the opinions of the owners... Standard practice.. They were only really slated by one person. This is why they complained, as it was very biased and unfair. I think this is very unfair.. Sophos had a good stable product V4 and then they decide to upgrade to a version that quite frankly is the pits to install and manage. I have spoken to the helpdesk and they seem to think their product smells of roses.. Yet as most of us know version 6 is very frustrating and time consuming to install.. and we the ICT managers are in the front line and get the stress and abuse from the school staff . yet .. when Sophos see's that there is an issue with their product on a major ICT Technical forum.. what do they do.. No not chat to us and try and get their product better by talking to the ICT Technicians and Managers.... No... they get all heavy... I guess I'll have to find a new AV company then..

If you have a room of 30 TFTs Cost of a hard glass is double the cost of a normal TFT... So you will have to a whole suite of 30 non toughened TFT's damaged to equate the cost of the toughened glass.. So lets say you lose normal TFT's 10 over 3 years that's a cost of £1000 The cost of the toughened glass is £3000 and you still lose £2000... no economies of scale here

This picture is from the server... :-) and I am working on the folder properties on the server. On the Share tab Permissions Everyone has full control... and it still is stopping a user from changing the dll file..

Hi I am trying for a user Library to have full control of a Shared Folder on a Windows 2003 Server. The Folder is Shared with everyone full control The Folder is C:\program files\heri4 The Folder is Mapped to the Library User as W:\Heri4 Yet the user seems to have a problem naming one of the dll's or running a setup file on the share.. I made the user domain admin and it worked find but dropping their right the problem returned.. I went to the security settings and gave Domain Users full control to the shared folder and still the problem is there.. I see at the bottom of the property box there is a deny greyed out in the special permissions. I removed the inherit permissions but still the special permissions deny is greyed out.. How can I sort this ? I have attached a picture of the permissions box.

It has to be you decision.. but my point of view is that there is no future promotion in ICT in the Education Sector.. Under the BSF which is refurbishing all the schools in the country ICT Managers are being wiped out and there will only be TUPED Technicians (password/toner changers) left in the schools. Where as If you get out of the Education sector now and go into the Private sector you can still have a career in ICT and work up to an ICT Manager or ICT Director position which do not exist under the BSF / BECTA plans for schools.

It's not possible to run 30 CAT6 cables down the same Containment route as CAT5.. you'll have to invest in more containment

The BSF and BECTA are insisting on CAT6 for all the new builds... but the peoblem with CAT6 is that it is to thick and bulky.. and you would need double the size containment to do a room.. Plus it's very expensive... Just shows you .. what do BECTA and the BSF really know when faced with the knowledge of ICT Managers

So are you up for coming then Grommit being that you want BSF tender companies to listen to you... Russell I don't want the BSF Tender Companies to listen to me.. I want them to disappear.. I want the BSF to realise that they are killing the Community of ICT Management in the Education Sector... Will Edugeek exist in 5 years time .. ?!?!? I doubt it..... as most of the members will either be doing a job in the private sector or be a Education Managed Service Company Drone that wont need the Edugeek Community to bounce ideas or questions off of.. Basically there is no future Career in IT in the Education Sector.. The only jobs will be Technican Drones, Helpdesk Support Drone, 2nd Line Helpdesk Support Drones or maybe if you are very lucky a supervisors job at one of the Big Managed Services Companies.... Gone are the 10's of Thousands Network Mangers Jobs in Schools.....

Maybe someone should write to him [email protected] regarding the killing off of School ICT Managers and the Tescoing of the Schools ICT to massive companies.. thus wiping out smaller companies and the independence of the schools.. Should be a good stoory.. I have heard Head after Head say they want to keep their Managers but can't because they will lose the BSF funding..

Isn't this like going to the enemy and telling them what faults they have thus making them stronger ? What I would like..... is to have each County/ Borough have an ICT Education Guru (or a few) to look after and advise the Network Managers of the Schools and to develop a strong but Independant IT Network Structure.. So each School will have its IT manager Controlling the Technicians.. but have discussions with the Gurus on Education IT Developments and Best Practice RM or any Managed Service Providor doesn't fit into this picture...

I think you should ask you LEA if they are planning something.. as if you spend time effort and money on one thing and the LEA is going with something else then you might miss some funding and support

You can copy the Connect.ini file to the c:\SIMS drive and if it defaults it will still load.. You can also re run the installation and set the default drive in the configuration at nthe start of the install
