I know.. but this was raised as one of the plusses for Managed services, as well as the fear factor of "What happens if your Network Manager is knocked down by a car!!" This was from S*****... they had the higher number then came back with the "adjusted" figure as there were gasps of shock from the SLT when they mentioned the first yearly figure. I also hear the London Underground want to bring the Support and Services back in-house as the Private Partnership Managed Services are a failure

But let's look on the flip side.. at least if it is in house someone onsite can take control of the network.. be it the Director of ICT or a Technician But lets say RM is you managed service Providor and you get into dispute with them. like unable to pay or contractual dispute and they put your account on "stop" or "hold" like most support companies do if there is a dispute.. They will just lock you out and could shut you down.. no passwords can be changed, no students can be added, if a server crashes it will be held hostage.. all the technicians are in the pay of RM so they will be taken off site... How difficult will it be to gain control of the Network back from RM and provide support to the students and staff.. all eggs in one basket comes to mind

I was told and I might be wrong that it is just the Managed Services Support that is £95 per student.. Nothing else.. Thats change the toner, replace the Mice or Ghost a PC... But as Moss will say..... the Managed Services can be tailored to you needs.... Yes that is correct... BUT anything above the basic watch the servers and do menial work around site will cost a lot extra.. We can have a SLA that will cover Weekend work or after hours work..... but it'll cost much more

Well simple maths is School of 1200 Students BSF/PFS BSF/PFS basic rate for Managed Services Costs is approx £95per student So thats £114 000.00 per year for 5 years = £570 000.00 No Evening Support, No Weekend Support, No instant deployment of Software, No Moving PC's from one room to another. No ICT/Phone/Photocopier/Cashless Catering/Library Software/Whiteboard/Curricilum/ Manager (all rounder) In-house ICT ICT Manager and 2 Techs approx £60 to £70k per Year = £350 00.00 or £220 000.00 less than BSF Costs (how many ICT suites can that buy) Evening Support, Weekend Support, Instant Deploymet of Software, Moving PC's where-ever you want. ICT manager/ All Rounder included in bundle Remember also the first year of the Managed Services is from the BSF build monies all further years have to be funded by the School

Ok let me get this straight.. 1/ The Managed services quote we got for our site was nearly DOUBLE the cost of our good in-house flexible accommodating IT Department. 2/ So if the school wants to keep its ICT Manager they have to pay double the existing Support costs for the Managed Service Contract AND employ the ICT Manager in another role at additional costs... So basically the school is paying a lot more for less?

What I think SGCF is asking.. is that Ranger uses local profiles and does not configure Outlook when its first started... So how can you get ALL the users to have an outlook profile How can we get 160 Local Profile Users to have a Outlook profile... because if you make an Outlook MSI with the server name how will it know the user name.. would it not default to the user account it was made in ?

Well the BSF say the a Core Duo is the basic Workstation for Admin and a Super Core Duo for Students In real life a Celeron is ample for Admin and a P4 is OK for Students P4's are now being sold for under £240

So I should install terminal server onto a "Server" and then get the ISA box to forward all Remote Control Access to this box... The box can then be set up with office and the rest of the applications... ? So the user would in-effect bypass the ISA server?

Hi Bit clueless here... Just opened port 3389 for RC... Have my ISA server with 2 Nic's in and one is outside facing... When I use a remote control client on an XP PC and log on... I am logging onto the ISA server...? I thought that the RC would be like logging onto a workstation with the Logon bat script mapping the folders and such.... not just a raw 2003 Server! What can I do do lock this all down and have the staff corralled in a happy place

What shocks me is that the Document says that its Schools have a very High level of ICT.. way above the DfES guidelines... So why kill something thats good and working ?

our "Consultants" took nearly £300 000.00 for the consultatition they did in the ICT sector.. And when they fiirst sat down with us they spoke the biggest load of drivil I have ever heard.... "Do not think of the ICT PC's as Boxes .. think outside the box".. think of your needs and then design the boxes around the needs".. and that will be £30k for the consultation..
