    Checking USers

Hi Is there a simple way (with out Ranger or CC3 etc) to see which users are logged onto which PC's in a Server 2003 XP network ?
  2. I think Grumbledooks' earlier comments sum up your concerns I read through the FITS implementation documentation and in general I'm supportive, It would be great if I could spend "more time to assist teaching staff embedding the use of ICT in the classroom." (I take this to mean using my current skills to improve ICT systems rather than being a TA). So far we have only just got past the helpdesk part - but IMO the benefits of change management are significant and should lead to a smoother running department, rather than firefighting. FITS .. Yea.... Doesn't help you when some teachers storm up to the ICT Office damanding that you fix their DVD player beacuse its not working... ( got damaged period before) and stand there untill you comply.. and when you tell them that its damaged beyond repair and that a new one has to be ordered you get an evil stare amd mutterings that the IT support is shit.... Or the Senior Teacher that texts that their board isn't working.... then you go down and find that its unplugged at the wall.. (next to the teachers desk) Or you get a student that comes to the ICT office because the Deputy Head PC's not working.. you go down and get a lecture that the system is rubbish and has not been working for days.. then you plug in the network cable (by the teachers desk, which had been unplugged by wandering hands) and it works fine .. Oh the Joys..
  3. BECTA said "once the burden of managing Infrastructure Services has been reduced" Now it's not a burden... it's my job.. It's what I do at the school....if it is reduced I will have no position.. But.. someone will have the burden making sure that the School gets Value for Money and a good system.. So the school will still have a burden of making sure that have the best ICT services.. So the burden moves from the ICT Manager to make sure it all works to some school staff member taking on a massive company......
  4. its so sad it it's funny.. How the postive Change will Affect Us http://schools.becta.org.uk/index.php?section=re&catcode=ss_res_pro_bps_inf_04&rid=12714 http://schools.becta.org.uk/index.php?section=re&catcode=ss_res_pro_bps_inf_04&rid=12711 I think I am going to beome a Vet...because sticking your arm up a cows arse has to be less stressful than being an ICT Manager with the BSF and BECTA trying to take your job away

    Petition your MP

It looks like BECTA has responded "Becta strongly rejects these claims and issued this statement to the media: Becta rejects the claims made by John Pugh MP that it is denying schools the opportunity to benefit from free and open source software." http://industry.becta.org.uk/display.cfm?resID=26062
  6. Management and support: Users need to be confident that the ICT infrastructure will work reliably and consistently, allowing them to concentrate on their learning, education or administration activities. To help meet and manage ICT requirements, Becta advocates a managed service approach to institutional infrastructure. Additionally, Becta has carried out a considerable amount of work in the field of network management and support by developing and helping institutions to implement the Framework for ICT Technical Support (FITS). 6 Familiarisation with and adoption of this scheme of work should be considered as a prerequisite to meet the requirements outlined in this document.

Please don't tell me you are going to defend RM ? Err sorry thay was just after RM said to me "If we give you the Domain Administrator Password we can no longer support your school"... That was just after they sold and installed a HDD for neary £1000 to a primary down the road..

Newham has fallen to RM RM appointed preferred bidder for £20 million Newham LEA educational RM will equip approximately 140 classrooms with interactive whole-class teaching environments comprising interactive whiteboards, the Kaleidos VTLE (virtual teaching and learning environment) and a range of interactive learning content from RM and other educational software publishers. Teachers will be provided with Tablet PCs for planning and lesson delivery, with teaching assistants and more than 4,000 pupils receiving notebook computers. Underpinning the whole-class teaching environments will be Community Connect 3 networks with wireless capabilities in each school, combined with an authority-wide portal based on Microsoft SharePoint Portal server. Warwickshire is RM Dudley is RM
  15. BSF is a government funded upgrade of all the Schools in England.. One of the criteria of getting the ICT part of the funding is that the Schools In-House ICT departments are outsorced and the ICT is then Managed and Controlled by a large ICT company like RM or RAMESYS.. The in house ICT staff are then employed by this Managed Services Company or Retrenched...

Who said this? All I can see is the Becta Tech Specification that specifies things in terms of open standards. On the face of it it is open but it does not preclude proprietry software and many bits looks like they were written as a way of including to include many MS products. eg word processing documents *must* be saved as ODF *or* txt - doesn't preclude MSOffice, but of course nobody will actually save word processing docs as .txt They could say that, but it would be utter rubbish. I can buy lots of things to integrate to windows but that doesn't mean windows is non-proprietry. Anyway I think this is slightly beyond the point because BSF doesn't preclude non-propriety, in many ways it encourages it -eg the early day motion (now signed by 67 MP's!) only large companies are allowed to bid and most of the bidders are MS partner companies (probably MS MoU precludes them from OSS - seems to anyway). As for Contractual documents, These are Public Domain after the bid is won as it is public money. Probably available on the counties website but certainly available by Freedom of Information search. What Scares the crap out of me tho is... 80% of the Contracts awarded so far are for RM...so therfore RM will be taking over the IT of English Schools... as well as the KS3 Testing... God help us all.. The last government IT thinktank apifiny was the NHS CFH IT Contract .. and look at how that disaster is turning out ...

Right.. apart from a few servers in the Schools RM won't be flogging them RM Ones and the such ?... I don't think so... RM is RM and they are there to make a profit..

    The Fallen...

One thing I don't understand.. The BSF and others state that the "new" ICT systems must be Non-Proprietary... and open.. yet they are now spending millions on RM systems ..like the CC3 which is Proprietary.. ??!

    BSF Topic

I see its been in its own forum for a couple of weeks... but.. it is still in the bottom of general Chit Chat.. under Christmas Parties and Blue Skys..... heh heh.. The BSF thread needs to be more prominent and should be up on top above technical or something.. in its own forum... also any activity in the forum isn't even on the front page in "EuGeek Forums Latest".. Questions need to be raised and asked... Like how come we have spent years blocking RM as they are too restrictive and very very expensive... yet now that have found a back door into the schools? We need to start getting together soon and talking ... BEFORE its too late.. Manchester, Stoke, Newcastle, Waltham Forest, Lambeth... etc have gone...
