Talking about DC's.. I have 1 Domain and 3 DC's on site.. Two in the Main area and one in the Admin Area.. All the DC's have 2 Roles 1/ The Main DC with the FSMO roles is a Curricilum File Server 2/ DC is a Application Server 3/ Admin DC is SIMS/File server.. The problem is when the main DC is off no-one can log on it says domain unavailable ?! .. but isn't it supposd to then go to the next DC to allow logons ? Any suggestions on how this is supposed to work

Tony are you ever going to take sides on the Managed Services issue as you are doing a fantastic job of sitting on the fence... We need people like you condeming The Governments Managed Services Policy and shout that from up high... not just sit on the fence with School Politic Political Correctness Spin.. Oh is this is the new Government initiative of getting the Teaching Assistants to become basic level ICT Support.. Our County is offering TA's the chance to go on a quick Free course to learn basic ICT support.. This is to Supplement the outsourcing of the In House ICT Departments to the Managed Service companies and the technicians onsite will not be controlled by the school so they are trying to make the Teaching Assistants do some of the dog work (like moving printers) It is mate... It's called the BSF and it's coming to take over every In-House ICT Department in Secondary Schools in the country and outsource in to a Large Managed Service Company.. You don't mention if you school is part of the BSF.. Is it ? Because if it is you're stuffed and cannot get out of the Managed Services as thats what the government wants for all schools.. And if you are the network manager your position under BSF is redundant in your present role at your school.. Read the BSF Forums.. http://www.edugeek.net/index.php?name=Forums&file=viewforum&f=45 If you are not part of the BSF project just yet and you are unhappy with what is being implemented you can restructure and renegotiate your "Contract" with the ICT company for a different level of service... i.e .. Please take away the fully managed service and only give us helpdesk support for the Network that you are installing for US.. If it is a non BSF installation then it is YOUR network and servers and you can tell them to do what you want... This is as long as you have the support of your Head Teacher... if this is not the case you will have to convince the Head why the fully managed service is not good for teaching and learning.. If it is BSF you have no chance... Under the BSF managed services the technicians no longer work for the school they work for the ICT Company.. and if there is a job request a ticket has to be raised and assesed if it part of the contract or not.. and if not a purchase order has to be raised by the school to get the job done .. and it has to be signed and faxed before the job gets started .... like moving a printer.. Support for the printer is in the contract but moving it is not.. so threfore it's an additional charge.

Isn't RAID 5 meant to offer speed advantages as well as redundancy? Raid5 has quite bad write performance and isn't so good for databases, which is essentially what the exchange storage is. Probably read performance on raid5 will be better though. I doubt Raid performance is likely to be a limiting factor on that server anyway. Also a 73GB max will be fine for the exchange limit so no need to take advantage of the better disk usage that raid5 offers, better to take advantage of an offline (and non spinning) disk IMO - then you get double redundancy - you can loose 2 disks before the data is gone!. @grommit When configuring the raid 1 or raid 5 there is an option for a hot spare (but you don't have the space if you use raid5). if a disk dies then the spare disk powers up and the data from one of the other disks automagically copies itself onto the spare disk and the broken one is marked as dead. On the Compaq I have a Compaq Array Configuration Utility for a Smart Array 431 Controller.. Do i just use this or this and the BIOS ? And thanks for the input.. trying to buy the disks from Insight now... What generation is the ML370 as they say your SCSI Disk SN is so old they don't make it anymore .....heh heh.... My other option is to buy a new server... but why this server is doing it's job....?!? What would the others do as to backup, rebuild OS, install Exchange, Configure Exchange, restore old mailboxes will take a lot of time... as to just putting in 3 disks and moving the datastore ?

HOT Spare ? Is that installed as a stand alone or within the RAID 1 or 5 ?

OK.. Cool... So i buy 3 x 75GB HDDS... Insert HDDS and Boot to BIOS... Make a new RAID 5 with the 75GB HDDs in the BIOS (being careful not to touch the existing HDDS) Boot to Windows and Format the new HDDS Use Exchange System Tools to Move the Exchange Datastore to the new F: Drive which will around 150GB.. Wallah... The do a quick inplace upgrade to Server 2003 :-)

Thanks CyberNerd... You are right I have 6 slots and 3 are filled with the 9.1's... I was told y someone that I would have to rebuild the box if i put in new HDD's.. but that is what I am trying to avoid ... I have already C, D and E Drive's in the server of around 7 GB each and the Exchange Database's is on D: which has 500mb space left.. what I wanted to do was expand the volume of D: If it goes OK I would put in 3 x 73GB's to expand ... would that work and how ?

Hi I mave a Proliant ML370 with 3 x 9.1 GB HDDS Raid 5 and 2GB RAM.. OS Server 2000 SP4 This is being used only as an Exchange Box.. Exchange 2003 It's an old rackmount P3 Server.. I am running out of space.. I have not done this before but how easy and what is the largest size HDD I can add to the server and how do I do it ? What do I buy?

I agree.. there was a poll on this site a few month back and over 84% voted that Vista offers nothing more than XP for their schools needs.... and they have no Vista onsite.. Now there seems this rush towards Vista... just because a few teachers thinks it looks pretty and then slags off the IT department for not being up to date... Why are we rusing towards Vista when most of the PC's in our schools cannot handle Vista any way... Because it's new an pretty... .. no no don't stare into the lights... anyway...I was at least hoping to wait untill the Christmas holidays before rolling out any Vista.. :-(... but it looks like I have to run with the herd

There are a few staff members that think that they cannot do the work without a Mac..... but these people have their email addresses with the word MAC in so I can see where they are coming from... la la land

We are just looking at buying PDAs for all our Year 6 pupils...... If you have a few dozen I think we could find a very good use for them!!! Why are you giving a year 6 a PDA... what can it be used for ? Field trip data collection, memo recording, if has camera adds more ideas.
