We use a Ghost Boot CD or Flash Drive to boot the PC into Ghost.. From there we have a Laptop or PC that has \Ghostcast started and then join to it.. No RIS or PXE needed....

Thanks Are you saying that I should change the network driver on the RM One and them make a Ghost Disk with the RIS Driver.. Or just make a Ghost Disk with the RIS Driver ? BTW.. we do not have a RM Network.. we have a vanilla XP/2003 Network and we are Ghosting 34 RM Ones with only Ghost from a Build

Hi I am having a terrible time trying Ghost an RM One We have Ghost 8.3 and cannot get the RM One Realtek GIGABIT RTL8169 Network Card to load so that we can Ghostcast... Any Ideas why as RM says it's not their problem..

It works like this where I work I am the Network Manger equal to above an Head of Department.. (just under an Assistant Head) My Boss.... the Director of ICT is a member of the SLT and I will sometimes join his at the SLT meetings to discuss issues and projects Teh Head My Technicians work for me

The New RM One comes with a toughened Screen.. on our open Days I punch a screen a few times to show the parents the toughness of the PC..

Hi I want to upgrade the main DC FMSO, File Server to R2.. How simple is this.. ? Would it be a case of just popping in the disk or is there a lot more to it as I have done upgrades before and they seem to reset everything.

Disagree with that there is always a need for added security. My networks are ultra secure but I still like the comfort of having seperate networks and I will never change on that. We have 2 networks here and a stack of servers. How do you run Exchange and SIMS over the 2 Domains ? Do staff have 2 seperat logons for each Domain.. and can Admin Staff logon to the Curricilum Domain ?

We are next to a very large independant collage and our ICT Network kicks their ass.. :-)

The new Tech drones that work for the massive company... servers Administered Remotely and a help desk system to manage the site.. Sorry mate.... But I have heard this before from our Schools that are going through the BSF... The ICT Manager freaks out at the BSF plan and losing his Network.... goes to the Head... the Head then assures him that he is important to the school and there is no way that they will be TUPED or Retrenched... and the BSF are nuts.... The BSF rolls on and after a few months after the shock has worn off and the BSF ICT consultants are chatting nicely to the Head and the Head is as happy as Larry with his new ICT Consultants that are offering him lots of new ideas and kit... well I have seen 2 Network Managers promised that they would stay on as Network managers..... but after a few months they were then told that they need to accept what was happening be TUPED as a Technician or move on.. When the School is being offered a million pounds of shiny brand new kit it's hard to back one person who no longer has a role to play.. This is why we are all up in arms ... RM. they build bullet proof Education Kit.. as well as SEN Kit

Just to clarify Grumbledook.. To get the ICT part of the BSF funding you have to take Managed ICT Services by either the LEA or some big company.. If you insist the ICT stays in-house you lose the ICT part of the funding which is over a million pounds in most schools.. Also there is no role for an School ICT Manager in the present BSF setup.. only technician drones

BSF.. Which Edugeek Members work in a BSF School ? As I would like to know what the SLA is like?? What is considered additional work.. do you set up projectors ? etc

One Domain, 2 Files Servers, One Exchange Server, One SIMS, Server, One Applications Server, One Web Server, Another Database Server, Two Backup Servers, 3 DC's The rule nowdays is One Domain and a Server for Every Application File Database Backup Exchange ETC

The ICT Support Contract (which will cost double the schools present ICT support costs) is only paid for the first year of the 5 year contract by BSF funding.. for the other 4 years the school has to find it from thier own budget.. Plus they will enter into a "refresh" contact which means thay will be contracted into buying more kit every year as the new company will not automatically support kit over 3 years old.. Plus all the feeebie work that was done .. like repair damaged PC's or set up a projetor for a presentation is chargeable.. Plus the Support staff no longer work for the school.. therefore cannot be instructed by the schooll.. so all problems and requests have to come through a help desk and assesed if they are chargeable (aditional work like replace missing mice) and if chargeable most likely a purchase order has to be signed before any work gets started..

That is great Grumbledook as you seem to be the most articulate one of us and therefore should get the point over in government speak… My in-house idea is not for it to be a LEA in-house but a lower down grass roots in-house at the school, where it is needed.. Some of us have fantastic ICT departments and the school relies heavily on us to do many more jobs related to ICT than just supporting the network… So I suggest that we should explore the idea of a School In-House ICT department with a LEA ICT consultant overseer to allay the fears of the BSF that the ICT might not be up to standard… but the school still keeps final say.. I mean how many schools want to become a foundation school so they don’t have to listen to the Council :twisted: You can also speak about the costs of in-house to outsourced… a school 1200 students is £133,000.00 per year outsourced and no additional service's commited for 5 years to £70,000.00 in-house with full 24 hour service for all and everything… The Consultant can also organise training courses for the ICT Support Staff and thus you have an investor in people and not just an investor in corporate fat cats... Yea we have glass walls and doors.. the staff put cupboards in front of them and are complaining that they have no walls to put up shelving… Look brilliant on plans but again design over function… lot’s of money wasted..

Hi I do not understand what the "instance" is on the bat script.. it says I have to run ShrinkDBLog {server}\{instance} {database} now I do not know what the instance is ? my server is called server1.. and the database is called SIMS so how would the string work ? so i go from the C: drive (does it have to be run from the drive the database is on ?) ShrinkDBLog.bat SERVER1\SIMS sims I keep getting this error [DBMSLPCN]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. [DBMSLPCN]ConnectionOpen (Connect()).

I inform the Head who holds back their last pay check.. we soon get the laptop back.. :-)

Our Idea should be to try and keep the ICT in-house for schools that have strong ICT already in-house.. And maybe a supportive Uber ICT Consultant working for the Council "advising" the ICT Managers on the governments vision. And then only offer outscourcing to schools that need it.. But the schools have to heva a choice as amny many schools have a good, happy and strong relationship with their ICT Managers it's just FITS..
