You'd still have concerns Daveyboy, but I think teachers have to be more self-sufficient when it comes to the use of ICT. They're not exactly the stereotypical two finger typer (which my dad is btw ) and don't ask questions like..."So where does the tape go" and there are some teachers at the forefront of using ICT in new and innovative ways but overall the standard is far short of where it should be. I mean these teachers are supposed to be preparing our young people for a world where computers and software applications dominate the world of work. And yet all we seem to hear from teachers is complaints about computers replacing traditional teaching - when the crux of the matter is lack of ICT proficiency among teachers is also detrimental. And is something that needs to be addressed. Which Planet are you living on mate.. in la la land.... ? Most of the teachers I know can barely logon let alone be proficiant with ICT and the setting up of systems/software to teach.... Thats why they have Support staff.. As in Science Support Staff, Food Tech Support Staff, Design and Tech Support Staff, Music Support Staff... and ICT SUPPORT STAFF..... Not just ICT Managed Service Supplier Drones..

We just id the students and then lock them in a room until they take it off..

My first contact with a large Managed Service Company in my first week starting in the Education sector was when the "company" wanted to charge a primary School £800 to add an additional 80GB IDE HDD to a server... I informed the head and the price was dropped to £300 as the company was shocked that an ICT Specialist was onsite and querying their costs and practice.. The second was when I saw in a few Primaries a CD Server tat cost £3000+ just sitting there doing nothing.... I asked about this and they said that they wee sold the CD Server to store CD's on the network.... What the company failed to mention that it would only store CD purchased from them in there Packages.. So from that day on I knew that I had to defend my Primaries and Secondaries from being ripped off..

Doubt it as it seems by his posts that he doesn't know what he's talking about .. and anyone that advocates destroying the ICT Community within a school is a fool...

My Calculations is on what the site pays now for the in-house ICT Team and what the BSF Rates are for a Basic Managed Servies... and it's nearly double for less work. Why in God's name would I want to do that.. what you propose is me losing my job.... And for your information a lot of companies are taking their ICT Support back in-house after the disasters of outsourcing.. I wanna get angry with you with your stupid statement "expensive school network managers".. but I am a professional so I wont Are you a Troll ? My quote about 'expensive network managers' is from past experience where I have dealt with a number of network managers on between 28-32K a year who don't have to worry about providing dns, firewalls and a whole host of other solutions (because they are provided by the local authority) and that traditionaly to be implemented in-house in corporate IT . Thats because we do many many other jobs that are not in the corporate world.... like AV, CCTV, Photocopiers, Telephones, Cashless Catering, Bromcom..etc We have our own firewall and DNS servers... which is a very simple and 5 min job once setup and configured... There is no position for Network Managers under the BSF.. we get TUPED as technicians or have to leave..... What we are saying is not that Managed Services is bad in all schools as many many schools need it as they are in a bad IT condition... But it's that the schools with good ICT Departments are being forced to destroy the in-house services And as for calling you a Troll... well it's a bit bizarre that every Professional and their Head Teachers on this forum DO NOT support the BSF ICT Managed Service Model .. yet you come along ....been on here for only 2 weeks....... and support the destruction of many schools supurb ICT Departments.. What is your role in the Education sector if i may ask ?

ARE YOU NUTS!!!!!! We know for a fact that is doesn't work like that and it has been proved wiith the CFP Rollout... All you get is being forced to buy from the preferred bidder at inflated prices and you can't buy from anyone else..

Yes we do - is the CAL for server access not included with OEM WinXP Pro? This is where MS licensing really confuses me and a lot of others I suspect! Nope, you have to buy CALs separately - per device or per user. I don't think this is true as I believe that the reason XP Pro costs so much more than XP Home is that it's classed as a CAL on the server..

Nice neighbour you are

I believe so... why so ?
-
This is not true

I have heard that the ICT part might not be a tightly bound with the BSF Building Works ?

Mac Book Pro VS Toshiba for a small room of Laptops Mac The Cheapest Mac Book Pro is £1,105.53 ex VAT You need a Mac Book Pro for a Secondary School because a normal Mac Book's 13" Screen is a bit to small so you really need a 15" screen. So 20 Mac Book Pro's cost £22,100.00 ex VAT Toshiba A Toshiba 15" Core Duo all Bells and Whistles (firewire, wireless etc) is £349.00 So 20 Laptops cost £6,980.00 that a difference of £15,120.00 That's Fifteen THOUSAND pounds more for Mac.. just because it's a prettier looking piece of kit... How can you justify that...? unless you are obsessed..

Eh ?!? If I spent an hour making up a GPO I would want to use it in my other schools...

Had the same problem.. you need IMACS but you also need to buy a Xserver unless you want you file server filled with massive music files..

You are allowed to copy Music you own... you can copy it to your PC, your Ipod, to tape for the car.. as long as you do not copy it to give away
