Windows 10 unattend answer file for use with WDS 2012 R2
dapaulio replied to Badaz52's topic in Windows 10
Just registering my interest in this thread as I am building my 10 image and may hit this stumbling block when I get to it. -
We had to do both as we found certain hardware types still failed to pxe boot

Over the last two years (ish) we have been overhauling our server room we have got 3 x DL380 G7, G8 and G9 with 2 x 8 core 90-110GB RAM and 4 port HBA card in each connected multipath to MSA2040 san with 10TB of storage setup in 3 RAID 5 with hot spare volumes (with spare bays to play with) 18 VM's spread evenly across all 3 hosts with plenty of redundancy for failover All servers and switches connected back to a HP 5406Rzl2, redundant management, 4 x modular 20 gig-t + 4 SFP switch and 1 modular 24 sfp switch (+1 spare module bay for expansion) 1Gig fibre to all our edge switches (planning for 10Gig fibre in the works to future proof - doubt implementation will be a while off yet) our core and servers are good. just have to work on the edge switches now. all running ok but are getting old and have a few cascading room switches which I want to pull back to the nearest edge switch cab. 95% of computers are within 5 years of age on an active 5 to 6 year rolling upgrade plan

I agree I liked the idea of sims being pulled by the client when needed rather than pushed from the server when complete. but S2 had its quirks like S3 does. impatient teachers who use to quit the update before it complete which completely killed sims on that computer caused me so many issues despite numerous email asking staff to be patient. they never listened. In hindsight with S3 I admit I feel more in control with knowing with a single button press FMS, Discover and SIMS will deploy to all my devices I have registered, and gives me a detailed after upgrade report so you can pre-empt complaints and possibly rectify before the end users notice rather than wait for them to arise. although it has its own quirks with a little more work lets hope capita improve on this feature in subsequent updates. although it seems more of a hassle for the little extra work you feel more at ease knowing what to expect. I want to add I was not paid by capita to say any of those things.

not ideal I know but the best we got so far.

That is a question which frustrates a lot of technicians and answers are few and far between. make reimaging workstations very difficult as you have to remember to go back and redeploy the agent manually. I have seen somewhere on edugeek someone published a cool looking piece of script which deploys the agent but couldn't tell you first hand whether it works and how well it works however it is third party scripted, not capita approved. (is my understanding) the way i understand s3 is unfortunately the way S3 deploys and links to the management console is based on its own unique id in SQL database and this script looks up the ID in SQL and is deployed with the agent. As for the laptops i admit it is not easy the first s3 update was a nightmare with sims on laptops complaints for days however that allowed me to install the s3 agent on the laptops which needed it. the autumn update was easier as the update queued on the laptops that were not online. once the laptop became online it takes roughly 5 mins for the updater to run or the staff can force the update using the agent instruction sent in the email. like I said I had 0 complaints after the autumn update regarding laptops and sims Good luck

I too find it difficult to say no. it is programmed inside us to help out as much as possible but having said that I have had to use the word no when it involves braking the law. you would be surprised of how many times a week I am asked to rip a youtube, bbc iplayer video. When you are held responsible for the advice you give you find saying no relatively easy, that is if you know yourself and understand the reason you are saying no

may not be necessary with your configuration but had me scratching my head for an hour or so after migrating ours over to a new server when you migrate your server we had to add the IP helper address on our vlans on our core switch and also change DHCP scope options 66 and 67.
-
in solus 3 you have the option to extract the update. never had to use it. When I first deployed Sims through S3 (summer 2015) it was busy with laptops obviously as you are experiencing not being able to deployed to but now I have managed to deploy the solus 3 agent to all laptops with SIMS, its a lot easier. I made a simple instruction email to all staff in the event of an incompatible database error occurring teaching them how to use the agent. My Autumn 2015 release went a lot smoother after with a grand total of 0 complaints
-
check that it is not toggle disabled... one of the fn + F# keys. we had a laptop that toggled wireless and Bluetooth together
-
We experienced this when we first migrated to Solus 3 during the summer 2015 update and as you experienced the connect.ini did not copy across during the update. We have since updated to autumn 2015 and had no issue afterwards but I wrote a script that checks for connect.ini being present and if not copies the connect.ini to the relevant path on the computer and created a GPO to run on shutdown. Connect.ini [sIMSConnection] Redirect=S:\sims
SimsINICheck.cmd
if exist "c:\Program Files\Sims\SIMS .net\connect.ini" goto End :Install if exist "c:\Program Files\Sims\SIMS .net" goto Step2 md "c:\Program Files\Sims\SIMS .net" :Step2 copy "\\server\share\SIMS\connect.ini" "c:\Program Files\Sims\SIMS .net\connect.ini" Echo.Sims Connect INI installed :END

normally I would agree. for a member of staff that is left logged in where the possibility is they are likely to return, but a student who has a set timetable and is likely never to return until their next lesson in a couple days or weeks, you are just tying up resources on a computer for a user that is never going to return until the computer is next shutdown at the end of the day where they are likely still to lose work if they have any unsaved. your just prolonging the inevitable. I am curious though how does it work as you can only have two simultaneous connections only (by default). a single computer could be logged onto on average by 6-8 different users a day. if two of those lock their sessions then you will have to reboot or disconnect the users anyway
-
this works also however can I advise also using the -f (force) and -t (time delay) switch for a more effective remote reboot. eg. shutdown -r -m \\computername -t 0 -f

+1 for this solution. we have had this in place for as long as I can remember and works really well. my only gripe is it can take two or three seconds to acknowledge a staff member credentials where in that time you question whether it has worked. may not sound long but it is long enough to confuse staff. I think if I recall it requires staff to have local admin priveleges on the computers. this may be a deal breaker for you if you are not convinced on this fix then you could rdp on to the client and log off the user manually using task manager. however this would require doing work and we all know we don't like additional work

We still have onsite exchange so couldnot tell you whether you are one of many people suffering this problem however O365 currently has an incident number that engineers are currently investigating relating to exchange online services and features. It was only raised within the last hour but may be related. It may be worth holding back trying anything until they resolve their issue. Things you could check are Is the ou checked in connectors in sync service manager where your year 7 pupils reside If you change another pupils password that you know that works in ad and force a sync. Can you log on to that account with that reset password I assume if you reset the password on the yr 7 account in O365 it works then?

What does the log file say? Any event logs on the server? Is the service manager in services.msc running? Have you got a proxy? If so you will need to enter these details in to the setting in ssm

Another thought is have you got a trunk set up on the switch which includes port 28. If so you won't/shouldn't be tagging the port you would need to tag the trunk. Sh run will confirm what port/trunk the other vlans use. And also what the trunk Id is for you to tag Although one fibre is plugged in I have seen switch trunks set up on both fibres ports and multiple gig up links and not all of them are utilised. You can also check your switches higher in the network. Eg core switch. confirm the fibre is not set up in a trunk there also.
-
Was it originally config through the browser or telnet? Can you post your running config. Type Sh run in to telnet then copy paste out. Try removing the vlan from the switch Config t no vlan # Wr mem Reboot ( you shouldn't have to do this to commit changes) Telnet on again Config t Vlan # Name useful name Tagged 28 Untagged 1-24 (example) Wr mem Sh run (show running config to confirm the setting is there) Reboot

Not too familiar whether our setup will have different symptoms as to your setup as we only have a single 2008 r2 as a gw/host. Did you install the programs using the install application for remote desktop wizard through the control panel? other than that, that is all I have to offer on this topic good luck

HP regularly do a "trade up to HP" where you can get cashback on laptops, computers, printers etc. this involves having any working laptop (if you buy a laptop) and by working meaning gets past POST. You buy a new qualifying laptop, printer, computer and in exchange you send any old laptop, printer, computer back to them. https://tradeuptohp.com/gb/en/pages/tradein/home my own case study I bought 100 x Prodesk 400 G1 for £380 per unit (ex VAT). I returned a mixture of 100 dx2300, dx2200 and 500B mini tower pc. I know in my case study I am swapping HP for HP but it really doesn't matter. I received £150 per unit cashback approximately 3 months later. you have to organise everything from the collection, the palleting and make sure all the computers are in a reasonable state, but definitely worth the money.

Other than viewing them in task manager under the users tab? or Remote Desktop Service Manager... RD gateway Manager also reports the same thing. if you want to automate logging off disconnected users there are settings you can change where you can set a disconnected timeout where a user will be auto logged off once the disconnected time expires. this can be found in RD session Manager > click on the RD session host configuration > right click on connection you have configured and properties > under sessions tab configure the time out of the disconnected users hope this helps

When we had these scripts running we ran logon and logoff scripts using with kix32.exe. at the time they supported our xp machines. these scripts have not been used or tested on any workstation later than xp. there are references to more recent OS support and I assume that the environment variables are related to kix but I you can easily throw something similar together using cmd scripting, or vbs if you don't want to or cant use kix. like i said not used this since our xp days but have a play. it may still be useable goodluck Logon.kix script ? "######################################" ? "Logging" ? "######################################" $a = RedirectOutput ("\\server\logs$\By_Day\@mdayno-@",0) ?"LOGON,"@USERID","@WKSTA","@TIME","@DATE","@LSERVER $a = RedirectOutput ("\\server\logs$\By_Workstation\@WKSTA.csv",0) ?"LOGON,"@USERID","@TIME","@DATE $a = RedirectOutput ("\\server\logs$\By_User\@USERID.csv",0) ?"LOGON,"@WKSTA","@TIME","@DATE
Logoff.kix Script
? "######################################" ? "Logging" ? "######################################" $a = RedirectOutput ("\\server\logs$\By_Day\@mdayno-@",0) ?"LOGOFF,"@USERID","@WKSTA","@TIME","@DATE","@LSERVER $a = RedirectOutput ("\\server\logs$\By_Workstation\@WKSTA.csv",0) ?"LOGOFF,"@USERID","@TIME","@DATE $a = RedirectOutput ("\\server\logs$\By_User\@USERID.csv",0) ?"LOGOFF,"@WKSTA","@TIME","@DATE
Sound suspiciously like gpo timeout How random is it? To a specific model computer (could be driver). Does it consistently delay on every logon? Specific user group? We had a case of certain computers Tring to install a print driver by mapping a printer via gpo and failing. Try disabling gpo one by one in a test ou group

For What purpose is it you are trying to achieve? We use to have a log file script that writes an entry on login and logoff to a csv. The intention was with a couple of formulas inserted into the csv we could determine who was logged in at a certain point but we removed it to clean up our scripts to speed up log on times as we realised we never used it to report anything in the years it was active. As an alternative smooth wall has a feature whereby it reports active users but not sure how accurate that would be.
