Yes there is, you can restrict students through papercut in the one of the menu's (cant remember which). First create an AD group that will have all the students in eg. MFD_No_Copy then under filters and restrictions, restrict that group to copy. I only have experience with Ricoh MFD and the settings seem different when i tried to create a toshiba model in devices. so the settings appear to be different depending on the manufacturer. alternatively if you want to be tight you could set copier charging for students at £1 per page. they will soon get the hint

We made a workaround where we created 3 links on our website one for each of the sites (students, parents and teachers) eg one of the links is domain.com/slg/students another is domain.com/slg/parents. This will pass you through to the correct site. To choose a homepage on sharepoint 2013 for each slg site log in as admin select the student site then choose the page you want as it's homepage then click on assign as homepage from the top navigation. Repeat for the other slg sites.

I bought a unifi UAP outdoor standard for less than £100 to cover the all weather pitch, outdoor netball court and the running track. It has an epic spread. 100m away clear line of sight and my wireless only dropped one bar. I considered throttling the power on it as neighbours of the school approx. minimum 70m away from the AP complained to the school as they were told by their ISP we were affecting their domestic wireless signal.

sorry for the late Update: Turns out that I didn't have anything really to worry about and in fact WJEC software is better than other onscreen testers we have. The mock exam went perfectly however my only gripe is that the on load updater fails not only on students all the time which i imagine is just a permission issue either on the computer or through smoothwall somewhere but even as an admin it fails a number of times before it eventually successfully updates. The students can only access the software if it is fully patched. WJEC say its a network issue but the onscreen tester will complete one whilst fails on another randomly. Given the frequency of the updates from wjec (once a year - quoted by wjec phone operator) and the students not being able to update is not much of a worry as we do a pre exam service on all the test machines the night before anyway and we just run the software initialising the onload updater anyway to ensure it work but for admins to intermittently receive update errors would suggest something is not right. I have whitelisted the site in no authentication and logs do not suggest any blocks are impeding the updater to run. Like I said this is just an annoying glitch and appears miles better than the pearson on screen tester we have. roll on the live exams hopefully it will be as seemless as the mocks

We had a similar issue Whats the total cable length between Computer and smartboard. Not the distance between computer and smartboard. I replaced the cable between trunking and projector with a 20m (I thought) usb cable with an inline active booster however Vision don't seem to have them on their website anymore. the longest they do is 15m USB Cable and Adaptors TC 15MUSB+ [sAP:3004953] 15 metres (49.2 feet) *10+ and 15+ models have an in-line active booster (48 mm / 1.9″ long x 25 mm / 0.98″ wide) integrated half way along cable. When used with Vision’s Techconnect modular faceplate recommends using with the TC2 USB+ active booster module with all cables longer than 5m (16.4 ft).

OP what is the reason for the restriction? I agree with imullings. This sounds like you will create more of a headache for yourself over a problem which is not really a problem. I assume your Group policy is set up correctly restricting access to staff software and other network permissions are set up properly. Lessons are engineered now that students use interactive features to aid learning from teaching workstations. By restricting that access you will be hindering modern teaching techniques in getting the students involved.

Hi all I have just been handed the task of installing WJEC onscreen testing platform before our trial exams next week. Before posting this I have not had much time to actually problem solve yet and some issues may be very straight forward but given my extremely short turn around I am open to opinions and suggestions. The software comes with an MSI package which makes easy deployment however have come across small issues when coming to use the software. I am open to other peoples experiences that may help with this poorly written software Regards

This may not be any help in your case what so ever but I have found FMS generates all sorts of weird and wonderful errors that seem to fixed simply by changing the default printer and then changing it back again. I assume it has something to do with reporting and PCL 6 drivers. Very rarely do we experience FMS errors but when I do this fixes it everytime. Worth a try

i feel your pain and i am sure many IT techs will agree, I too am responsible for a network which is accessed 24/7 and i have often thought whether i am the only one that constantly monitors the network whether that is through email/txt alerts, the occasional log on etc. i had to set up a social networking group to stop staff who i have friended on many occasions private message me on weekends, holidays etc. i generally work to a rule where i assess the issue on and depending on the answers to my own questions would determine whether i fixed the issue straight away or wait till next day of work a) did the head log the issue? b) how bad is the problem c) how much heat would i get if i left it d) how much have i had to drink. you learn to live with the heat, it comes as an occupational hazard working in IT. just think if you are not getting heat for not fixing an issue in your own time then you would be getting heat for something else when you return to work. its an endless cycle.

we have 1 x site engineer/senior tech (me) and 1 x junior tech supporting all things that have a circuit board (feels like that sometimes) 1400 students and their parents. We offer advice and support to the students parents following a number of parental engagement schemes being launched and the likes of O365 and SLG. we have also been known to offer remote assistance to home pc's 150 staff 650 computers spread across 120 odd rooms fully AV kitted 300 laptops/tablets BYOD scheme for sixth formers although we have been stretched for a while, i don't complain to much in this economical climate. too much work keeps you in a job and makes the day fly by

We had a case of this on a single TS Server and unfortunately to cut a long story short we reinstalled it as it was easier and we had planned to upgrade it anyway. I cant remember what we actually found prior to reinstalling it but suspect the server vhd had run out of space and in a attempt to make space by removing old profiles, the default profile had been deleted and/or corrupt.

Hi Some advice please on evicting a clustered HV server We are planning to upgrade our Hyper V servers from 2008R2 to 2012R2 as part of a SAN upgrade. Current configuration is have 5 x Clustered 2008R2 Nodes of various ages with p2000 SAN. We aim to reduce the number of hosts on the current cluster from 5 to 3 and use two of the better hosts with a fresh 2012r2 install as well as a brand new 2012r2 host in a new cluster and new SAN. Once we have migrated all VM's off the old San on to the new, the old cluster will be destroyed and all servers will be decommissioned Although It looks straight forward I always have that nagging doubt and I wondered if anyone has experience and words of wisdom evicting a node. is it as straight forward as they make it sound Steps in Failover Cluster Manager, migrate all Services and Applications off the proposed evicted node right click node Evict node remove HV role remove from domain turn off thanks in advance

I hate doing WU on servers. it is the most boring job ever. it is the first thing I do every school holidays just to get it out the way. All servers are installed normally within a couple hours including all clustered HV nodes. i think people are very brave allowing auto restart on their essential servers

I was told Support for s2 is up with the spring 16 release. We moved to s3 with the summer 15 release whilst we migrate our server to sql 2012 so not had a lot of time to play with s3 but from what I have notice my Opinion is rubbish 1 - no supported solution for automated deployment via gpo 2 - after update, all agents have to be online to push a update to clients otherwise it fails on the client and the user log a support request to have sums fixed on their computer 3 - you reimage or rename the computer after an agent is deployed it you have to delete the record in the console and readd it 4 - if your computer clients have not been switched on for a while eg over summer hols. dhcp issues a new address creating a new dns record there is a period where dns hasn't caught up and removed the stale records causing false online/offline reports in the s3 console. The workaround I found is creating a dhcp reservation for all clients with sins installed I would be interested in any comments or advice on the annoyances I have come to encounter with s3

I'm new to solus 3 and I have come across the same frustrations when deploying the agent. There doesnt seem to be any gpo support. If you manually install the agent it doesn't add it to the console which is rubbish if you buy new computers to replace old stock that you want to have the same computer names. You have to remove it and then reinstall from the console.

Did you install any windows updates around the time, or any updates for that matter. We had a wu break a part of sims once. Not something you would normally expect. Now it is one of the first things I check if the problem is not obvious Funny really because the only time I experience problems is registration and first time sync. checking in is fine through my proxy after the initial sync. For some reason meraki doesn't like my clients proxy configured by wpad Togo through my smoothwall. However connect them through a transparent proxy on the same smooth wall they are fine they sync and check in fine.

Sounds suspiciously like firewall ports have been changed at some point. i had a nightmare with meraki ports. although the documented ports were there we found others needed to be open also. Mainly port ranges were a lot larger than documented and the amazon servers are integral in deployment as apparently their servers hold the configuration info for the client when you run the client installer. Unblocking *.amazon.com didnt help and we had to unblock their IPaddresses. Be careful with the amazon servers as their IP addresses are different geographically. we had to ping and tracert amazon to get their ip address then use a online tool called ARIN to acquire the CIDR to unblock the whole ip range and the port associated in the documentation. if i recall it was only 993 that was additional to 80 and 443. believe me it is not for the faint hearted especially if you have a third party to get involved. We had to ask or our LEA to also unblock the ports and you always suspected whether they were actually doing it (correctly). As our LEA had to repeat what we were doing it took me 6 months off and on and one of our LEA third tier network engineers and hosting services engineer to get sorted so good luck. if you have to deal with a third party firewall then i recommend you escalate that call soon as possible

What SQL version you using and pardon my bluntness but why are you essentially cloning the server? to answer your question, i assume you had spaces after the switches and the database switch uses the -d switch eg sqlcmd -s server\instance -u sa -p password -d sims -q "exec sims.db_p_transfer_login" never using the cmd line myself i would try running it in SQL Management Studio? I did the same task migrating sims from server and sql 2008 to server and sql 2012 r2 just last week and I hit the same hurdle but I had forgot to run the transfer login procedure before deattaching the db. I performed the migration manually in the same way you did but didn't use the cmd line. Can I assume you have cloned your simsroot and docstorage on to your new server, if so check your connect.ini on the computer and the server. most clients connecting to sims will have a redirect to the s: which will point to your new server but in some cases I have seen the main connect.ini on the client with the server instance named, this will take precedence over the connect.ini on the server. let me know how you get on Also an alternative would be to use capitas migration tool?

We are currently in a transition of migrating our sims from Server 2008 with SQL 2008 to a new Server and SQL server 2012 r2 designed to be a switch off switch on upgrade for reasons mainly due to the users complaining its not the time to be doing an upgrade because of their own deadlines I am yet to complete the transition. figuring that my LA has released the summer update to my Solus 2, the upgrade will be ok on my server 2008? Although capita no longer support SQL2008 for the summer release my intention would be to upgrade now, see out the next week then migrate the database on to my new server your Opinions are welcome

Hi all I have managed to last this long without having to migrate to solus 3. Which I am pretty proud of as hopefully by know s3 is a bit more reliable then it was in previous versions This however makes me a newbie. I have found the solus 3 install exe in setups however it gives a phase 1 error - cannot find sims infrastructure exe. It is definately there but I cannot get past it. Apologies for gaps in filenames and possible autocorrect. I wrote this on my phone so I hope it makes sense

I didnt think SIMS relied on the S: other than for shared files. I don't know whether this would help you or whether you have actually done this already but can you not install Sims server installation on a test machine and copy the newly created simsroot files in to you live s: environment. it will just then be a matter of recovering certain files as the end users report any issues which I cannot see being that many. At least your s: will be nice and tidy again
