We're just moving away from them - but that isn't for any bad reason at all. Their service has been second to none, support has always been spot on and never had to be passed around for anything - one call/email has always resolved everything, and that's usually changes we've requested rather than any problems. Reliability was excellent but obviously will depend on your carrier as much as anything else, and I love the Sophos XG. Do however make sure you go for the FastVue reporting on top as that is still the XG's weak point, HOWEVER they did contact me just towards the end of us using our XG to ask if I'd trial a new reporting setup, so they may already have that taken care of I've given plenty of positive references for them over the phone and in writing and will continue to do so - they still provide a line to us temporarily, as we've had delay after delay with our new gigabit line (thanks Openreach!). They've been able to extend and cope with us chopping and changing constantly

Although the location of the device that ultimately hosts the database/software/service shouldn't alter the responsibility (well it does, dependent on the combined local and remote data protection regulations involved, but the school would still be the owner of said data), my confusion stems from any processing done by the 3rd party - or does that not matter as it's still done on your/the school's behalf? (and again, covered by the DPA). I could very well be over-thinking it

Whatever you do, make sure you include the cost of a new server in any renewal costings - suprised anyone would be sticking with SIMS long enough to warrant replacing a physical server, rather than going with something modern and suitable for the task at hand.

A good point raised here - indeed this feels like nothing short than a single DPO's opinion of whether this constitutes acceptable risk via said DPIA but is there any further context to it? As it stands, just a standard school hosted SIMS setup would surely make ESS a supplier and nothing more - certainly not a processor, but when "cloud hosted" surely that line moves towards the school being controller and ESS (or whatever 3rd party) being processor? I'm new to the DPO role so don't shoot me if there's something obvious I've missed!

This is our only real bugbear - to be honest, with Arbor we should be able to do away with a lot of the need for Edulink - however at the same time, Edulink/Overnet is bloody wonderful! They say you can't polish a turd, but they've managed to make one smell like roses from the outside at least! ( @OvernetData feel free to use that as a testimonial! ) Hopefully in the near future they'll be able to hook into other setups though for the various wonderful comms, booking facilities, parents evening bits etc

I did look at that, however couldn't see if it would likely be non-destructive, particularly where plastics and LCD panels are concerned. Might just order some and see how it goes, I expect to get a few more of these! (did one but managed, somehow to keep the original stuff intact!)

Hi all, Getting a few screen repairs on Lenovo laptops where the screen is attached to the back via rubberised adhesive strips - you pull out a tab at the bottom to release the adhesive. Now, I have literally paid less for FHD LCD panels than the cost of those strips (usually 20-25 quid!) and refuse on principal to pay that for the sake of adhesive. Naturally I could use some standard 3m rubberised double sided adhesive, but ideally need to keep it removable again in case of further repairs. Anyone have any ideas? Nearest I can find are picture hanging adhesive strips!

Indeed, how bad can it be that FMS, a product lifted from, and still firmly planted in the 1990s, is a "preferred product"? Sounds like the SBM in that instance is more scared of the idea change than the problems they believe it could cause. This is very much why it's a decision process that can't be led by one person; it must be a group of involved people. The vast majority of intelligent and/or people not resistant to change for (insert reason here) would be relishing the opportunity to ditch that.

Red Notice - very enjoyable. Usually when critics say "Ryan Reynolds is exceptionally irritating in this" it means he's just himself and is a blast. Not as good as Hitmans Bodyguard but enjoyable still. Shang Chi - Also enjoyable. Some of the CGI seemed a little bit small screen (refer to Blade 2 for a good, bad example of this) which was a bit jarring in places but particularly liked the Katy character. Although looking up the actress online afterwards and stumbling across her first major music video release, I wonder what Disney thought upon viewing it? Idiocracy - Just had to watch it at last after a couple of failed attempts. So bad it's good, and a little close to the bone!

I strongly suggest looking at Fastvue - that and Sophos will likely be cheaper than the other offerings and other than not having live content aware filtering like Smoothwall does (Barra doesn't from what I recall), XG is the superior of the two products IMO. Reporting was the one thing that let the XG down but Fastvue nails it. Hopefully Sophos one day realise they shouldn't have to rely on 3rd parties to fix their mistakes and get that sorted though!

From a personal standpoint, 1 is defective enough to return under sale of goods act (or modern equivalent) - in fact it doesn't need any fault at all.

A PITA indeed but forward planning helps prevent this, especially if a change of MIS is on the cards anyway. New schools coming in would give the opportunity to have a couple of live tests.

This; there is a significant amount of time and resource involved in installing a new MIS so a 3 year contract for starters would be reasonable. Renewal however, not so much.
