Fair enough, but with all due respect without the multi-million pound backing like companies like ESS (equity funded), Arbor (TES) BromCom etc and decades of intimate knowledge of what's involved and all the little intricacies, legal requirements, reporting requirements, interopability requirements with local authority systems which are usually themselves from the stoneage, timetabling, options, exams, often finance, communication, behaviour, attendance.... It takes huge teams years to get as close to they have to the old market leader SIMS and even then arguably only because SIMS stopped bothering. Honestly, it's not worth the thought or effort. Feel free to mock me in 5 years time with your market leader however - competition is GOOD.

Quality street (and other brands of similar sweets) tins were probably a lesser issue. The mantra has always been reduce, reuse, recycle, and that would certainly have fallen into "reuse" more often than not. Great storage containers that last for years and years, longer than items designed for that very purpose. Case in point - who's ever seen a tin of Danish Cookies/Biscuits/Shortbreads that actually had any cookies in? Exactly - it was always mums/grans sewing kit, and the Quality Street tin often had nuts, bolts washers and other items Dad found that might be useful one day in the distant future Regardless, I applaud the idea. Like for like, SIMS always came out more expensive than the better two - but when you factored in everything else like communications, payments, parental apps etc which were all 3rd party paid for bolt ons, it was massively more expensive overall.

Indeed, it'd be the PERC driver you need, but even then as the above point out you will need to create a RAID array first. I didn't even think about RAID in my first post, sorry! If it's replacing a single drive then you'd create a "JBOD" typically but please be very careful in the RAID bios, in case you have another storage array you can cause all sorts of horribleness. Once the array is created it should show in the windows setup - if not, you'll need the perc driver download from the dell site (it'll be under raid, perc or HBA drivers)

Chipset or SAS controller drivers needed, stick them on a USB and when it asks to find the drive select install driver and browse to whats on the USB. You may need to install/extract them first.

We just moved away from Iris as it was also diabolical. Support was non awful until we started kicking up a fuss, hardware was poor and the software even worse. Moved to Cunninghams, and even with having to re-enrol an entire school's biometrics, new year glitching etc it's been spot on. For the couple of teething issues we had their support was good.

To a point yes - any DSL worth their salt would be pumping the brakes regardless even if it's for their own protection. Anything properly serious would be above and beyond their remit, and if they need involvement then they'll be able to do so with the proper authorities with them.

I still think you need to raise this with your SLT - all the training I've seen and received specifically says that you shouldn't provide unfiltered access to *anyone* in a school, regardless of who they are and the context. You can mitigate it a little by having them log why and what they've searched for (which you should anyway) but even the DSL and Head are at risk of complications that may arise through this.

Age old argument again - in some places yes, but in some places you must. If everyone on our street or any of the surrounding streets parked all 4 wheels on the road, no vehicles larger than a hatchback are getting through (and I wouldn't trust some people to successfully navigate an e-scooter through). Don't. Period. Your DSL needs to pay more attention to their training. If they need to do it, do it outside of a school or use tools available to investigate context. Just because they are the DSL does not make them above the rules.

Well yes, but when you can pick any number of the smaller MIS' that fall into the "Other" category in the MIS lists and they all clearly have a better system and plans from the outset, it's easy to see SIMS falling before it even got to the full tender process. Obviously that's easier to say from an unbiased perspective, does/should being the current provider automatically include it in the process?

As long as you're aware initials do not magically make something disappear from an SAR (and fairly moot in a WA group anyway) then that should be fine. Most of that is more common sense than anything else, and the only difference between saying that in a WA chat as opposed to having a Friday night pint with colleagues is it being in writing.
