Hi all. We're currently having discussions about screen-lock times (a discussion as old as time!) and the balances between security and convenience. I thought the wisdom of crowds might be useful for everyone on this discussion. So I thought I'd put a poll together and see what people have set at their schools (for staff/teaching staff in particular) It's an age old debate, and we want to balance the needs of the users against the needs to protect the data.

So, let me get this straight... SIMS/ESS require you to pay for SQL Server licensing yourself, and not provide that process as part of the purchasing... and the data in the databases is the schools in it's own right... but they want to claim that they own the database infrastructure? Cool, so you can license the database software as well then can't you ESS? *insert every facepalm gif you can imagine here*

This could all be mitigated by the DfE requiring a standardised export and transfer feature for all MIS providers as part of their framework agreements, which would make it possible to have a single click export and import functionality for data (that would obviously be hidden away by providers until required). Though remember when BECTA existed, and attempted to make Promethean and SMART play nice and have a standardised format or a way to export between each other's formats? Then BECTA was shut down... I can't imagine the idea of true data portability will cross the minds of anyone during the next framework being put together...

I don't think it's mistaken, I think it's plainly wrong! If Chrome and Workspace and other Google solutions are good enough for Randstad, Village Hotels, Morissons, DFS, McLaren, PWC, BBVA, Ocado, Roche, Rentokil etc then who are we to suggest all of those massive companies are wrong?

Blockchain, yes. I'll give you that... and those that jumped on it are definitely jumping on AI. It's definitely a buzzword with a hazy end product (thanks to OpenAI bolting before the product was mature) But AI is definitely a real thing and it isn't going anywhere. Buzzword that it might be. Just like the cloud is (never a buzzword - just a matter of fact, it's here and its ubiquitous) Also, Meta actually turned up for the first time, with Quest 3 headsets and practical demos. It wasn't just ClassVR or a company that built it's entire product on Google Cardboard with fingers crossed and a hope.

I get the feeling that TES believe that a breach can only occur if it's malicious. That isn't the case, and it was quite clearly a breach. I hope schools have complained to the ICO, because the attitude of TES has not been great.

The two things I'm always feeding back to them are "Wrong time of year" and "Wrong location" The location is slightly easier now we have the Elizabeth Line running finally - but moving it back to January from March isn't great for me. I know why, budgets in schools wise - but it was so much nicer in March, finishing just as the sun was setting... Lush.

Progressive Web Apps is the industry term, though I'm sure Microsoft have their own unique phrasing.

Yes, they are formerly known as Live Kitchen. They were very good when I used them several years ago. Entirely cloud based from what I remember.

I've booked a few on-stand meetings but only with those I want to have a longer form discussion with. TableTalks had no interest for me, and the Tech User Labs felt limited as to choice, and none of it personally relevant. I'll take to browsing mostly.

The initial account ultimately doesn't matter. In a perfect world, you'd do it all on work accounts and work devices though. However...

Oh the hell I've had when suggesting you shouldn't be giving work provided devices to students, or your own family to use!

This is one of those pieces of software where I have the exact opposite argument to the "but it isn't industry standard" argument I have every time we suggest alternative software. I've yet to find a true cloud alternative though, if anyone is aware of one? I am loathed to attempt a lift-and-move to the cloud with 2D Design or its follow ups.
