There are similar files in SIMs that grind things to an almost halt due to AV software. We are advised to add them to SAVs exclusion list in our LA - maybe something similar in this case would help? Andy

Was any prompting required for that? Or did they just send you one? We have exclusively Promethean (well... apart from one "Clever" board that we got cheap) but they haven't sent me one Andy

I would say Flash. Shockwave material is created in another Macromedia (Adobe?) package called Director, which in my day was used (amongst other things I'm sure) to author multimedia CDs. Flash is the popular one for online material (and all those damm games!) it produces (relatively) tiny files and even the player is microscopic. As with most things its quite straightforward when you know how!! Flash is part of the Studio suite which is available on an Educationally priced site license available on ELCs which may be of interest particularly if you're going to do DiDa (we bought ours because we were, now we're not!) When I bought mine we got a subscription to the Macromedia University which has loads of getting started guides and tutorials etc. for all the packages. Andy

Exactly. But the students don't think like this. My point is that I wouldn't base the final decision on student input, because they will go with what is easiest for them and not what is best for them. I think you might not be giving credit it's possibly due. I would think it would be the teachers who be most resistant due to "change". In the recent KS3 testing, I'm not sure that many of the students even noticed they weren't using Microsoft. Unfortunately they struggled with the rest of the test(!) but I'm quite certain it wasn't the interface that put them off. Andy

These are upgrade licenses - no good for new machines. Oem licenses are not available under any volume licensing agreement. The £5 Win 98 licenses were from Computer Commodities. They were in the last catalogue/little flyer they sent me but seem to have disappeared from the website - maybe they've run out. Andy

I'm pretty sure I've seen "new" Win 98/95 licenses OEM for approx. a fiver. May be an avenue to explore... Andy

I was thinking the exact same thing over the weekend! We're just moving rooms and moved a notice board to uncover the yukkiest pink bit of wall you've ever seen. Here's one (a request, not a solution I'm afraid) - not sure if I've mentioned this before... Rather than limiting the kids printing to so many sheets per week etc., like most of the software solutions seem to offer, I, in an ideal world, would like to bill the department for which the kid is printing. Not necessarily homework, but certainly while in that lesson. If they're using machines within the dept., then that's easy - obviously - but how about in the ICT suites which are booked by every man and his dog - and sometimes they don;t even book - they just turn up. Does anyone have any ideas for solutions to this? Andy

I'm fairly certain you can share an Access database to allow more than one person access to it at a time - though it's quite a while (years even) since I've done it. Have a look through the help files for share or shared or similar. I must agree with... what was your name again? ( ) ... SQL or even MySQL might be better suited to a 'proper' application. Andy

Have it installed here for the very same reason!!! Spent a lot of time in days gone looking at various flavours of it - will look again, but fairly certain you can use Enterprise edition. You can also download and use the encoders and Helix servers. I understand the paid for version (which incidently, at the time, Thomas Telford subscribers got a discount for) includes the managment software for the enterprise edition and "more complete" servery bits i.e. variable bit rate streams, and more connections to the server. That is how I understood it, and of course not guaranteed fact Andy

Our SIMs upgrades are pretty much, no, completely spoon fed to us from our LA SIMs support guys, so I'm not too sure about what SOLUS 2, or 1 for that matter is. However, I gather we've recently moved to SOLUS 2, it didn't work for May's upgrade, so I was instructed on how to use SOLUS 1 If you know how to, or indeed are able to, use SOLUS 1 - maybe that'll work for you Andy.

Improvement number 1: "The title bar now shows your school name" - erm... in case you forget? What tickles me is the "favourite students". You just know, any students for whom you may wish to bookmark their details, are not going to be your "favourite" student!! Andy
