mattx Posted June 30, 2007 Posted June 30, 2007 I was just watching the BBC report on the iPhone - have to laugh, the reporter tried to load up the map function - did not load. Then he tried to launch a U-tube video - again, did not work. Ok it was trying to use the Apple stores Wi Fi link - still had me laughing though. $600 for a phone ? Errrrr no thanks. Yet another bit of over rated Apple tosh..... I'll stick with my trusty Nokia 6310i.

Ok, the phone is missing a few features (video recording, mp3's as ringtones etc...) but there is nothing to stop new firmware releases fixing that. Still, I wouldn't spend £300 on a phone.

And the first thing to break / crack when it gets dropped or sat on when someone leaves it in their back pocket... I've lost count how many times I've dropped my Nokia and it still works....

kingswood Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 Yes, Nokia's are good and reliable/strong things (i've yet to manage to break one) but then this is still innovative. I have been using a Nokia E61 for over a year now with no problems. It's a fantastic phone and lets me do all the other bits I need to- PIM, documents to go etc., that Windows Mobile is so good at (without having to use Windows Mobile). Before that I used a Dell Axim and a phone. I'm still skeptical about the iPhone. It's beautiful, has some very innovative features, and that's only the 1st gen version...but business will be hard pressed to integrate it into their systems without support for Exchange and other things. Whereas my lowly E61 lets me use the BlackBerry Push service, Exchange, and IMAP (or all three at once). I don't know. I probably will buy one, but it depends on the price of the thing when released.

Would that have nothing to do with the fact we are living in a material world, where many people don't care how many stars their car got in the ncap safety tests, as long as it looked shit hot?! You can't blame Apple for trying to get in on a piece of this 'stylish' market a certain percentage of the world goes for!

Especially at the prices they are charging If you so desperately want an ipod and a phone, you could buy an 8GB Nano and a decent phone for half the price of the iphone. It wouldnt take up much more pocket space either

Halfmad Posted July 1, 2007 Posted July 1, 2007 I don't mean to be nasty but I have never seen the point in many of the "features" that are added onto mobiles, menu systems could be improved (iPhone might do this) but cameras, mp3 players, data storage, video calling etc are things I have never really used on any of mine. I have a SE W810i at the moment, I've used the camera twice, the rest of the time I use it for recieving calls and texting. I just plain do not understand people who need everything on a mobile. I want a TINY mobile phone, I'd love one I could wear as a watch and of a similar size but I don't need these "features" which frankly I'd call gimmicks. If I want to take pictures I'll use a digital camera, if I want to listen to MP3s I'll use my MP3 player and if I want to video call, I'll jus speak to them face to face!! My best mate always has the latest GPS mobile, no doubt he'll be given an iPhone free by the local mobile shop that he does tech support for. He always ties to show them off to me and sighs in frustration because I'm just never, ever impressed

Just becuase you dont use them doesnt mean other poeple dont use them, thats why there are many different mobile phone models for different people and market positions. Its a bit sad but the 5mp camera on my N95 is currently the best dc I own , its handy becuase it fits in my pocket and is always good to go as I wouldnt normally carry a digital camera around with me. I don't need these "features" which frankly I'd call gimmicks. then you dont need a smart phone then, there is nothing wrong or right about this its just what meets your requirements. I'm looking forward to using skype on my phone in the near future so I could make calls to taiwan / europe for nothing which would be handy. Also make good use of Pico drive mega drive emulator and scumm vm as well as countless other software all of which make the train a little more comfortable. All these products will fit some kind of market position, I'm sure a company like apple would have done thier homework on this and made decisions based from this etc. Apple tends to have very good marketing so I'm sure thye wont struggle to sell the iPhone.

For me, this is the key point. The camera on my Razr isn't brilliant, neither is the video recording. But, its always with me wherever i go incase i need to quickly snap something. Its just handy to always have a camera on you without actually having to carry around yet another device. I wouldn't use it as a replacement for my digital camera with any serious photography but when i'm out and spot a good shot its handy to be able to just take it.

I don't want to carry two devices in my pocket when I can just have one. I wouldn't buy an iPhone as I don't have use for one, but I can see that Apple have hit the market exactly for certain customers.
