The USA is just looking to cover up their own stupidity and embarrassment. $800k damages? Nonsense. That's the cost of actually having to secure your systems I reckon. From what I saw of the extradition stuff, he had connected to systems using PC Anywhere, using default passwords. Ooh, such a terrorist...

 

Also, people saying he should be sent - you are obviously soulless. The guy has been judged to be a suicide risk by, I think, 5 separate medical professionals. He has asperger's, which any psychologist will be able to tell you means that much of his behaviour is simply an extension of the obsessive aspect of that.

 

So, in the end, yes he broke laws, but at the same time he has diminished responsibility and is a suicide risk!

The UK and the USA have *very* different justice systems. The USA is a lot more brutal than here, with a lot less attention paid to the accused's well-being than we do in the UK.

couldnt a compramise of been to try him over here physically but with an american court (and whatever other parafanellia needed) so ship a judge and jury etc over from the states? probabl cheaper than all the hassle so far as well and i doubt this is the end of it

Too many people read the Daily Mail? Too few people go off to check facts?

 

Well I read the same thing in the Guardian and the Telegraph, so shame on me for not going off and 'checking facts'.

 

Honestly this 'Daily Mail' shit got old about 5 years ago.

I'm glad he's been able to stay; as others have pointed out, he didn't really crack any security as there was naff-all security in place to stop him. The cracking consisted solely of "lets try this account name with 'password' then" and he got in, because senior US military can't grasp the concept of computer security.

 

Extradition should be for "crime commited on foreign soil, perpetrator then flees to another country". So if he had been sat at a computer in the US when he did this, realised his number was up and fled back here, then fair enough. But he was here when he commited the crime, so local law should apply. The US should be able to request his prosecution (and bring it privately should they wish to, as is possible in our legal system) and work with our law enforcement to provide evidence, but he should be tried here.

 

Just a shame it took so long for reason to prevail.

I find it ironic that Theresa May uses the Human Rights Act to stop Mckinnon from being sent. This being the same Human Rights Act the tories want to get rid of..... A fine example of Tory double standards..... Edited October 18, 2012 by mattx
