Jake Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 During the summer, along with the other work we have to do, we are planning to rename all our servers to something a little more uniform. In total, to allow for any future expansion we are looking for 20 names. Just wondering what everyone is using for their names at the moment, and if anyone has suggestions. At the moment we are considering characters from the film Aliens, so...Apone, Hicks, Hudson, Ripley, Bishop etc etc.
DMcCoy Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Greek Mythology here, excluding the ones that killed their children etc

Jake Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Cheers for those Webman, I should really use the search function more often but I am just too lazy
Jake Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 I like the Discworld idea, but sadly I am the only one here who reads Discworld and would know the names. Yeah I know !! The other techs dont read Pratchett...blasphemy I tell you !
Geoff Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Start with something subtle Jake, label up your server room with a 'The Dungeon Dimensions' Plaque.
Domino Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I like the aliens idea.. I assume apone would be your mac daddy DC, Hudson the flaky kit thats always falling over and Bishop your auto-update server.....
Jake Posted June 21, 2007 Author Posted June 21, 2007 Start with something subtle Jake, label up your server room with a 'The Dungeon Dimensions' Plaque. Hehe, I must admit, the temptation to have a server called BloodyStupidJohnson is pretty strong I like the aliens idea.. I assume apone would be your mac daddy DC, Hudson the flaky kit thats always falling over and Bishop your auto-update server..... yeah, Vasquez would be our newest and sexiest server, Burke would be our ISA server that watches communication traffic, then falls over when the going gets rough and Hicks would be our NAS server, which sits around looking good but doesnt really do all that much
t_guest Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 we use ,gold, silver, copper, titanium ,bronze all our names
marco84 Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I remember when i was at college they called the servers after characters in the simpsons. I think the DC was Homer!!!
philjones2000 Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 We have Byron, Shakespeare, Orwell etc. Makes me feel interlectual except when we come to name a new one and can only think of "Grisham" or "King"
plexer Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 God I'm boring then. serverXX for file servers and DC's wserverXX for web servers eserverXX for online testing servers tserverXX for test servers vserverXX for servers running virtual machines Ben
witch Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 or CutMyOwnThroat Dibbler! the data server would be called 'the Librarian (ook) and the archive server - 'Death' I think I woud call my main server Rincewind. All pie in the sky, as apart from the odd caching server I only have one in each school!
gwendes Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 srv1 srv2 srv3 srv4 srv5 Oh yes, we rock. At Novatech they were from Greek mythology I think, maybe that was somewhere else...
Butuz Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 lgs-sr-001 and up for domain controllers lgs-sr-apps1 and up for application member servers lgs-sr-ts1 and up for terminal member servers lgs-sr-nas1 and up for NAS member servers LGS being school initials. Andrew
jumpinjamez Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Used to have majic Roundabout characters then planets but the new NM has gone boring "Mainserver" Dougal is still the proxy thou
pete Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 of the non-boring names: Jeff Bunyip Hoopsnake Sputnik .... whatever we feel like calling the next server. but mostly their true names are hidden, with cnames to services provided, so proxy goes to hoopsnake, patchserver goes to bunyip. We were tempted to use Dictators as our naming convention, but thought the head might get upset to discover his files were held on PolPot.
fooby Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 tcc-share tcc-print tcc-proxy tccx1 tccx2 tccx3 tcc-sharepoint tcc-comms2 tcc-ts-01 tcc-web01 hmm - boring really. fooby
Wizzer Posted June 22, 2007 Posted June 22, 2007 At school, dull (initials of the school)SRV01, 02, 03 etc. Although one is called surfcontrol (wonder what that does) At home I used to use Lord of the Rings characters, but I use Toy Story characters now, Woody, Buzz, Rex I'm looking forward to my kids being older and having PC's so I can use MrPotato
Hybrid Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 We use alcohol names :-) Corona Stella Bacardi Taboo Sol to name a few
GrumbleDook Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Further to the list of precious and semi-precious metals ... we now have Zirconium as our VMWare box ... which hosts Scandium (hosting ePO and a few other applications), Curium (emergency DC in case everything goes down), Hassium (test Sharepoint 2007 server), Tantalum (WAMP for trying things with Moodle and Joomla), and Yttrium (Vista machine to allow us to play with Vista based policies within the domain). We have also added a few Terminal Servers ... boringly called TS01, TS02, etc ... and the sun kit is SGD1 and SGD2 ... Support workstations include copper, nickel, tungsten, zinc ... and mine is hydrogen.
john Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 Support workstations include copper, nickel, tungsten, zinc ... and mine is hydrogen. hehe, I don't want to be coming near you with a naked flame otherwise Boom!
kearton Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 I used to work for a company called Saturn, and the servers were named after some of Saturn's moons (Pan, Pheobe, Titan, Hyperion, Atlas, Pandora, etc)
Guest kerrymoralee9280 Posted June 25, 2007 Posted June 25, 2007 We use S1, S2, S3, S4, NAS1, NAS2 etc. The TS and MIS are still called DST-TS/MIS-001 from the old CC3 network as the old network manager was too lazy to change them. The other boxes are named after things that are suitable i.e. our Proxy is called the GUARDIAN.
