bwestlake Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 making a new home server and need ideas on what to call it
twin--turbo Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Home servers, laptops and equipment all get girls names. Work servers all boring... We did in the old days name the work servers after planets. the Sims Server was Uranus, Oh the fun. We often got a Tape stuck in Uranus, and logging out of uranus always caused a wry smile. We then ran out of planets, fortunatly it was a natural leap to GODS and other Classical entities. Our two Currciuclum servers were an identical pair of PE2800's Romulus and Remus, Cerberus was the main internet Filter/Firewall... Rob
dhicks Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 making a new home server and need ideas on what to call it I run multiple virtual machines on my home servers, so I tend to stick to a simple naming/numbering system to avoid having to remember names for everything - DHXEN001 / DHXEN002 for the physical servers, DHROUTER001, DHFILES001, etc for the virtual machines.
rich_tech Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Monolith is my home machine, because of the black aluminium thermaltake case I used on it. Had logins with thunderbirds names where I worked previously for one of the customers servers, I was Virgil for some reason that I cant remember now.
sjatkn Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 I started using Muppet characters for machine names. I skipped Miss Piggy just in case it took on her trait of hitting back!
GCB Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 How very systematic of you, David Our servers at school used to be named after the legend of King Arthur: Arthur was the DC Merlin was the apps and file server It then got tricky as spelling errors in Guinevere, Lancelot, Tristan, Percivale etc. when trying to script things in a hurry was a big source of frustration. So it got shelved for something a little simpler/boring. The staff used to like it though.
elsiegee40 Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Ours are quite boring. Random Name School has two servers: RNSERVER01 and RNSERVER02
synaesthesia Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Holly, Queeg, Kryten and Hudzen. Gwan, have a guess
synaesthesia Posted September 23, 2012 Posted September 23, 2012 Jupiter and Ganymede here To Ganymede and Titan, Yes sir, I've been around. But there aint no place in the whole of space, Like the good ol' toddlin town...
Andthomson Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Holly, Queeg, Kryten and Hudzen. Gwan, have a guess Ah the Crimson Short one, My home WI-FI SSID is Lister :-)
Garacesh Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 My mum's husband uses Morpheus for his home server. I'd probably go with a nerd game/movie reference. Maybe I'd go with 'Emmett' ('Doc' from BTtF). Maybe 'Freeman'. Maybe 'Doctor'. I'm sure I can think of others, but not first-thing on a Monday morning. I personally don't havea home server, though, just standalone machines.
synaesthesia Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 My brothers systems are "Freeman" "Eli" "Kleiner" and "Alyx" 1
bladedanny Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 I run two schools, one follows Greek Gods and the other Roman Gods. SIMSSERVER was Roman God right?
tb2571989 Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Work server have functional names, school initals and role, then number. So Domain Controllers are SCHDC01, SCHDC02, etc. Home machines used to be called after precious gems, i.e. Diamond, Ruby, Crystal, etc, but now they are [owner name]-[type]-[role] so tb-svr-fs or tb-vmsvr-apps, for physical file server and virtual applications server respectively.
Rawns Posted September 24, 2012 Posted September 24, 2012 Think I need to be more original with mine. MEDIA-CENTRE, RAWNS-DESKTOP & RAWNS-NETBOOK.
fairm010 Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Server1, Server2 and Server3 as as good as it gets here!
Garacesh Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Got 3 servers? Ought to name 'em 'Bulbasaur', 'Charmander' and 'Squirtle'
fairm010 Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 We have four to be honest, but I dont think the LA would be impressed if I renamed their server to Pikachu!
X-13 Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 (edited) We have four to be honest, but I dont think the LA would be impressed if I renamed their server to Pikachu! Ah, if it's their server, best to leave it be. I've always named computers/servers/APs after psychotic robots. Skynet, HAL-9000, TX-1000 [and over terminators], GLaDOS... I also, unsucessfully, tried to get every error message on HAL-9000 to read "I'm sorry, $username. I can't let you do that." Edited September 25, 2012 by X-13
Danp Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 The last lot I named were, Diamond, Ruby, Gemstone, Amethyst, Sapphire and one other that I can't remember.
british_government Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Mine is called localhost. Just spent a good 5 minutes laughing at what could actually happen "I can ping it, but why arent my shares showing?????"
Fleetwood Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 Work ones are Mercury & Venus - we're cutting down to one 'big' server however, that's been conveniently named Jupiter . I've already decided that if I ever get to deal with a servers on my own, I'll be using Star Wars references!
hardtailstar Posted September 25, 2012 Posted September 25, 2012 my routers at home are called 'Internet Elders' and 'Renholm Industries' In process of renaming servers and pcs at home.
