Apple TV and Class Set of Ipads

We have just been delivered 35 iPad's for a class set in our school, along with 5 apple TV's and a Mac Mini Server. But as soon as we connected the apple tv to a projector and two ipads to the network we realised that there was a problem, how do you manage which ipad is displayed on screen if we are using a class set. For example if a teacher was using the ipad on screen for a lesson and the class figure out how to mirror the ipad, in turn taking over the projector with there screen. Is there an app or a way of stopping children from doing this until a password is entered? or is it a case of disabling airplay with a configuration utility. Hope to hear peoples input as soon as. You can add a connection password to the Apple TV. If they know that password, there isn't much more you can do at present, I think..

Nope there isn't, Apple TVs were never really designed to work like that. It comes down to the now age old problem with Apple products, they are great for home but problems crop up when in a school. Anyone with the password can connect and I don't think there is any obvious way to see who is streaming to the TV, which means you can't tell who is doing what.

 

What you could do is have a teachers ipad on one VLAN and then the other iPads on another VLAN then they couldn't see the Apple TV (if you plug the Apple Tv into the network and don't connect it via the wireless)

Connection password and only let the teacher know it is likely the only way around this I think

I agree with the above - the easiest solution is a password on AppleTV. You could setup a VLAN in theory, but then it may open up other problems.

You might as well give the password to the students as give it to the teacher as without a doubt the students will get to know it, either the teacher will give it out without thinking or a student will see the teacher putting it in.

if that's really the concern, then that's where it'd be useful to have some sort of security in discovering such devices via a wireless VLAN'ed environment where students are on a different vlan to staff/apple tv vlan(s) and therefore cannot see the bonjour/mdns broadcasts.
