This time the lucky Dept are English, Maths & Tech we want to get the same if Possible but we will probably get a better video card for the Tech lot. We have little space (like most people) & they need a bit of a kick but at a fair cost (again like most) Last year we got DELL Optiplex GX520 which are ok but DELL Support is a pain. Ashers Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 What problems have you had with Dell, at my old school we had the next business day support and appart from some time in the que we never had a unit down for more that 24 hrs.
eastlondon Posted June 13, 2007 Author Posted June 13, 2007 We have had a few of the PSU go and when we call Dell to say “the PSU has blown there is no power getting to the PC†and they keep asking about what lights are on & can we try different cable/PSU it can get a bit annoying, but that aside the DVD RW are not very reliable & there is the "feature" (as Dell call it) of the PC going into a coma if it gets too near to a mobile phone. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2693154430071088233

starscream Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 We got a batch of Optiplex machines 2 years ago and all the CMOS batteries have died! All credit to dell for getting replacement batteries out but it was a drawn out process and if we bought batteries ourselves it would void the warranty apparently. I like the dells but haven't got any other 2 so can't really commenton reliability other than they are working great at the moment!

The SX270 and GX270 capacitor issue is a well documented problem. I have had a SX270 mobo replaced under warranty within 24hrs, and the same with one GX270 which was out of warranty.

sidewinder Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 I would have to say try and avoid the all-in-ones Not saying anything is wrong with those ones in particular but we had some from another company that look like they use a nearly identical chassis and they have been a nightmare - Extremely loud as there is not much room for cooling (although ours did have P4's so these new ones are most likely much cooler) - The problem of the screen dying means you have to swap the entire PC out, whereas with a conventional PC its easy to swap screens - Quite hard to get cables in and out, and looks quite messy if you use a VGA splitter for a projector The ones we have do have quite poor build quality but to be fair those ones do look a newer model so you should be OK Again this is nothing against SCL, its just my problems with the design in general
mrforgetful Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 We were on HP dx2200 but are now getting HP dx2300. Originally been all Fujitsu-Siemens but were highly vandalisable, the HPs are pretty robust.
john Posted June 23, 2007 Posted June 23, 2007 I feel that that new range of HPs are not as robust as the old range, the new all black fluted fronts look naff comapired to the black / silver older range IMHO that is. Also the 2000 series is not that brill, if your budget will stretch a bit try getting something in the 5000 range as I was once told that HP have no care or thought with the 2000 range and just make them as cheap and nasty as possible.

For example a Latitude D820 which would cost £850.00 according to their Educational site cost £500.00 after speaking to a sales person direct. Go figure.

Maybe I'll just stick to HP then, I hate having to fight for prices. I know it's the way of the world but I'd rather pay slightly more (as it's not my money) and go on a website and click a few buttons, than go on a website to look at things then have to ring someone and tell them what I've just looked at to get the actual price. Especially when it ends up that you ring, their not there, you go out the office when they ring back, you ring them back on your return and find they're talking to someone else. Email, it's the way forward!

I can't recommended them as I'm just getting some quotes at the moment, and have not used them before, but I'm sure someone on here has...
