sqdge Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 It must be Wednesday, I must have too much time on my hands, so here is this week's PQOTW. Today is our school sports day. When I was child I hated sports day. It wasn't that I was bad at sports, I was just average - so I never won a race, nor did I lose one. I was rarely picked to do anything, so I spent the entire afternoon getting sunburn on the school field wondering if anyone would notice if I just went home. However, I do remember once winning a 4 mile run and being talked about for about, ooh, 3 hours. It was quite nice. And it leads me on to this week's question: What is your greatest sporting achievement? It doesn't have to be from your school days.
bishopsgarthstockton Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 completed a 24hr endurance x country cycle race. Just got in to Kite surfing, so will probably have a go at a competition in couple of years time, if i dont get eaten by a bloody seal
Guest richard Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Catching a 36lb pike when I was a teenager. My heaviest coarse fish to date. Apart from that I can't think of anything.
PageZ Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 My name was put forward to the England selectors to play darts for England against Scotland and Wlaes. I didn't get picked.... Cheers Mr B
webman Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Nope Like yourself I was a middle-of-the-road kid and didn't win anything. I got hit in the eye with a tennis ball (at quite some speed) though, if that counts

ConTheITGuy Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 While at primary school, we entered 2 teams into my (future) high school's summer fair 5 aside comp. I have always been useless at football, but a few of us went down to watch, and because it was just a laugh, the teacher let us play. The two teams got swapped around a fair bit throughout the day. The last match for our 2 teams was against each other. A particular one would get placed if they beat the other. So, the strategic, and sportsman like instruction from our teacher was "Team A, stand still and let Team B win!" I was on Team A for that match, but because I had played for Team B during the day - I got a medal, my first and only medal for football - it is quite treasured! Andy
elsiegee40 Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I was at the top end of Ladies Division 2 for K1 Slalom (kayak)... And won the girls K1 event at the North Yorkshire Schools Slalom Championships I was rubbish at everything else! Although I vaguely remember coming 2nd in the 800m at Sports Day aged about 15 as I was one of the few fit enough not to drop dead by 400m!
Jake Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Ladies....sports....kits......... *faints* (I played squash in a hampshire league, back in my younger, and CONSIDERABLY fitter days)
Norphy Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Realising that I didn't have to participate in sports days and never bothering again Does completely mullering everyone in a Midtown Madness 2 tournament at a LAN party count as sport?
witch Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 CAGE, Jake! I was the second reserve for the Netball team when I was 13 I never did anything with sport at my high school (a girl's grammar). You were either good at sport, very very academic or good at music. Guess which one I am!! I do a lot more exercise now but nothing competitive - I can't help thinking that knocking a ball back and forth is a bit pointless.
kearton Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Getting picked for my Primary school's first XI cricket team back in NZ in the early 80's by opening the bowling at the "trials", and taking 4 wickets in the first over (including a hat-trick).
Scotmk Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 When I was about 14, I won a cracker eating competition, I ate 2 cream crackers the quickest, no water. Very dry, but I won a selection of taped and posters. Does this count?
localzuk Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I think it would be completing my Duke of Edinburgh hiking things without killing anyone in my group - that took restraint!! Other than that, it would be figuring out how to get out of all sporting stuff in year 11
Friez Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Me + Sport = don't mix. Most memorable moment was being taken on a school trip and having to do an assault course race that included shuffling across a rope that spanned a river and falling into a river. Oh and I can't swim. The PE staff had a fit. Was awesome. Thankfully I managed to drag myself out of the riverbank (which was pretty much a deep trench, so it was like climbing a cliff), it was pretty difficult because I wasn't a particularly strong lad and was weighed down by heavy wet clothes. We lost the race because of it, but I was more talked about than the winners
Pottsey Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 I did a 30 ish mile endurance ride and another time I spent over 6 hours in the saddle but didn’t cover any where near as many miles. That was a fun day started of with a 6 riders ended up with 2 riders by the end. One of the horse’s thought it would be fun to throw the rider off in the middle of nowhere where, cars couldn’t get to us.
steve Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Playing basketball for my high school team (we never won a match though). A hat trick of medals at high school on sports day. Javalin - Gold, Shot put - Silver, Discus - Bronze.
Andrew_C Posted June 13, 2007 Posted June 13, 2007 Pretty rubbish at sports but... In my 5th year we could choose some more "esoteric" sports, one term each. I fenced for a term, and once disarmed the teacher, who wasn't sure whether to be impressed, or not. Another term was 10 pin bowling. I just missed 300; stuffing the same teacher. This time he definitely wasn't impressed. I'm still faintly surprised I didn't have to walk home rather than ride in the minibus!
t_guest Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 my sports are running after the teachers with a large hammer shouting i will not fix your computer  only joking it has to be the egg and spoon race i won 4 times at that the good memories come back to me
gwendes Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 When my mum beat everyone else's mum in the 100m mums race at Primary school - I think she's still faster than any of us! I did a 'go round and round the field as many times as you can in half and hour at school and beat all the fast kids - mind over matter and all that jazz. Short distances I suck - but I'd beat them at Star Craft so swings and roundabouts, eh?
CHR1S Posted June 21, 2007 Posted June 21, 2007 Won a troutmaster after going fly fishing for the first time... was a big fish Played indoor 5 a side vs Birmingham City reserve team (or so I was told.. I was young and gullable). I managed to break my arm 10 mins into my first ever snowboarding lesson... now thats an acheivement
