All hail the man cave

This thread is entirely about me gloating. Sorry about that.

 

After about 4 months of my house being upside down and being refurbed almost entirely (only two rooms untouched... because we did them two years ago when we moved in) I've finally been able to unpack my rubbish and create my man cave in what was the garage, and is now a lovely and warm interior room.

 

In corner one we have my PC and comfy desk chair, along with books stacked on the shelves and the handful of Warhammer miniatures I ever bothered to paint (Eldar on top, Dwarves & Skaven below for the curious)...

 

There's also the TV, my beloved LG 42" plasma, which has connected into it, from left to right: PC, Xbox 360, Wii, N64, Dreamcast, Gamecube and DVD Player. The cupboard on the left is boxed PC games; the bottom drawer Wii games, middle drawer 360 games, top drawer is controllers, and the cupboard on the right has the Gamecube, Dreamcast, N64, DS and Gameboy games in it. And a couple more controllers that didn't fit in the drawer, for my life overfloweth with consoles now

 

And to enjoy all this from, a lovely reclining leather chair. And next to that, my 20+ year old Amiga 500, and boxes and boxes of floppies stashed away beneath.

It was only ever a glorified shed for us anyway, it was too small to get a car and lawnmower in together. So the old wood shed got knocked down and a 12' by 8' shed put up in its place for all the gardening bits.

 

Now I just need to build a shelter to keep my firewood dry. Which is to say, I'm allowed to build a badly designed and optimistically constructed piece of DIY that's not vital so I can indulge my awful handyman skills to my heart's content

They're vaguely tied together as much as they can be but there's just so many cables going in :/ the aerial cable alone goes from the aerial point at the wall -> N64 manual switcher -> Dreamcast automatic switcher -> TV.

 

If anyone has ideas for neatening it up, please, enlighten me!

I've got a 32" TV, Xbox 360, MegaDrive 1 & 2, Master System, NES, Dreamcast and BluRay player and even a small (albeit cheap and uncomfortable) sofa. Oh, and a wolf skin rug. And a big poster of Penelope Cruz in not a lot. But it's all crammed around our multiple fridges, freezers and washing machine in the far too hot for comfort conservatory...

Run the cables up inside the wall? Or run a length of trunking up - not as neat but easier to do :/

Run the cables up inside the wall? Or run a length of trunking up - not as neat but easier to do :/

 

Walls are stuffed full of insulation, and it'd make it even harder to swap cables around/diagnose dodgy connections than cable ties do I may have to see if I can get a cable sleeve to tidy it all into, just to look neater.

I'm just planning to make the most of it while I can; with a new 'un on the way at the end of the summer, and strong hints of another already being dropped, I'm still scared that I might lose it to being a children's playroom, in the way that you worry about losing anything you love.

 

My planned defence is just to get even more crap until I become so entrenched in the room it's easier to build a new extension on the house somewhere than it is to box up and move all my stuff

idd it is at the moment, though I keep adjusting the man/woman ratio by storing "computer stuff" around there ! I also prefer things that the wife hates, like Black shelving from Ikea for my various models/games and DVDs

First of all, cables are an integral part of any kind of 'man' activity. Don't try to hide them.......enjoy them, decorate them, make them a feature, buy different coloured cables for each device, get electrofluorescent if you can. A multitude of cables, to the UNTRAINED eye, looks like a mess. We have trained eyes. We know they're essential, and that each cable has it's place on the Great Patch Panel of Life.

 

Second......is the wife allowed in there, and if so, why?

 

Third......where's the fridge/drinks cabinet/beer cupboard?

 

When I wanted to convert a room to 'Mine', the wife gave me an ultimatum. 'Me or your work-room', she said........the rest is, as they say, history.
