Wordpress for main school website

Hi All,

 

Is anyone here using Wordpress as a cms for your main school website. I love using Wordpress but a few people have said it does not had all the features you would need. I completely disagree just curious to see what others think.

 

I have been playing with page line framework and i have found it very easy was able to make a functioning site.

I also think the edugeek moola package is going into a Wordpress package instead.

Our schools website is done via wordpress;

St. Matthew's Primary School, Luton

 

The long blog-like list on the main page is one of many things I don't really like tbh, but it's all run by the ICT Co-ord as I really don't have time to run it myself!

Hi Rozzer, I use Wordpress as a CMS for our school site. The great thing about it is if there is a feature missing, there is more than likely a plugin for it.

 

Bookings | Zingiri (parents evenings) & WordPress › The Events Calendar « WordPress Plugins keep the boss happy, really recommend these!

 

The only thing that really bugs me is our County hosts are shocking, no mod_rewrite or anything you'd expect from a basic web hosting company. I use the index.php/link trick to get around it, but still 'cmon! Though we'd have this issue with any modern CMS. I find I have to use a lot of workarounds if experimenting with plugins.

 

I think it's also very easy to get to grips with if you're not the only one updating it.

 

Also a big fan of this as a starting point for any wordpress project - HTML5 Reset :: A simple set of templates for any project

I'm not a fan of how the breadcrumb is at the very top of the site then the main navigation is so far down the page.

 

If I'm completely honest though I prefer your current website at Home » Ashton Park School.

Ignore the breadcrumb thats a test at the mo.

 

Our current website is managed externally and running on jshop and offers no way of customising it ourself.

 

Also the navigation is terrible on our current website. Compared to the new one its a lot easier to get to where you want to go.

@DSapseid I dont know if its just me but IMO the scrolling images move way too fast. I was trying to read the text and about 3 words in, it went to the next picture.

Ours is Wordpress Brighouse High School » Official Website of Brighouse High School Find it really easy to use and the CMS is brilliant, however still lacking information off some of the departments so information isnt always up to date.

Harsh, but you're right - it is a fail.

 

If you're developing for the web, everything should be browser-agnostic.

Even if IE is all you use in-school, making a website compatible for other browsers is absolutely essential, the only exception I'd understand is for an intranet, where it's only viewed within the building and so the only *necessary* browser is the one you primarily use and support internally.

 

You have to consider that internally, your audience is likely to be very small indeed. I know that here, the website is visited only a handful of times during the day from within the school itself. Our primary audience are parents and potential students, of which use a variety of browsers. My web stats for last month show that IE accounts for 53.7% of visitors' browsers. While that's high, it's only half of everyone who visits. That means it's essential for me to ensure that our website is viewable on as many browsers as possible.

The time that the most visits occur are around 8am and 6pm.

 

We only use IE within school, too, but it's a severe oversight to limit yourself just to it because you "don't support" others internally. Your potential customers are likely to be put off if they can't even access your website for information. Considering that pupils = money, that should be something to consider indeed.
