  1. I agree with all of this. iWorks is a joy to use.
  2. Hi, just wanted to let you know, I've been in the same boat with an old xserve, I've just got off the phone from Apple after about an hour, they are shipping me a physical copy of 10.7 Server for £14.00. It took a lot of explaining what I was after to various people, back and forth from technical support to sales support but it finally happened!
  3. You just need to set them as mobile accounts - Server Admin 10.6 Help: Setting Up Mobile User Accounts in Active Directory
  4. do they boot in safe mode? (shift at startup)
  5. Hi Rozzer, I use Wordpress as a CMS for our school site. The great thing about it is if there is a feature missing, there is more than likely a plugin for it. Bookings | Zingiri (parents evenings) & WordPress › The Events Calendar « WordPress Plugins keep the boss happy, really recommend these! The only thing that really bugs me is our County hosts are shocking, no mod_rewrite or anything you'd expect from a basic web hosting company. I use the index.php/link trick to get around it, but still 'cmon! Though we'd have this issue with any modern CMS. I find I have to use a lot of workarounds if experimenting with plugins. I think it's also very easy to get to grips with if you're not the only one updating it. Also a big fan of this as a starting point for any wordpress project - HTML5 Reset :: A simple set of templates for any project
  6. The School I work for hired me specifically to deal with Macs, the Window's Technicians still see them as a bit of a novelty!, just to reiterate a lot of what @JR-PCS said when a Mac network is setup correctly it runs well and minimal support is needed, most do with a support contract. The advantage for us of having someone in-house is that the Students have support for the great bundled software. When I arrived in my current position they were badly configured and it's been a fun journey bringing them back up to scratch, and educating students and staff as to what the platform's capable of. Technicians find them easy to grasp once they get over the differences but to most Students and Staff they are completely alien and it's easy to forget this aspect of the support sometimes.
  7. Sorry for third post lol, quite passionate about this subject! There is also Rapidweaver Web Design Software for Mac - RapidWeaver - Overview which is good for sites with multiple pages. But personally I would try HYPE.
  8. Just had a look, and it's recently had a very dramatic hike in price, but I would say it's very much still worth it.
  9. Tumult Hype we use this, it's simple, stable and beautiful. The support is great and they offer education pricing. Our students have made everything from basic websites to 'app' layouts etc with this. It doesn't automatically link pages like iweb, it's more a html5 animation tool, but imo it's what iweb should be. You can even combine with iweb. HYPE IS AWESOME.
  10. So you mean the home directories mount but just don't show in the finder? you can press cmd+up when in documents to see home directory, press cmd+up one more time to drag the home directory to the sidebar. Or go finder > preferences > general to set home folder as default view for new finder windows. finder > preferences > sidebar to choose what displays in sidebar WGM will allow you to push a modified com.apple.sidebarlists.plist to all users
  11. You can also access Disk Utility from the Admin user account to repair permissions. You can also put the Macs into target disk mode (cmd+t at startup) and mount via firewire on a working mac and repair the disk that way.
  12. I'm not sure what you've tried already but Onyx Titanium's Software • Home is a great maintenance utility, have you tried repairing permissions etc from Disk Utility once you're in? Have you run an update recently that may have caused this, seems strange that all 6 would start slowing down at the same time? Or has it occurred over time? Try re-applying the 10.6.8 combo update? Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
  13. Are they bound to AD? If so try re-binding. edit: completely remove ad then re-bind

    Mac Tracking

Selectamark | Selectamark Security Systems plc On aluminium they kind of blend in, they look kind of engraved and metallic white from a certain angle

    Mac Tracking

Hi, that's sad to hear, we also had a lot of iMacs stolen a month or so ago. It was a targeted attack I think as they took only the i3/i5 iMacs from a room of mixed identical looking c2ds and i series. Prey standalone is free and open source, it's their CMS which is closed. (I might be wrong please correct me) We also started using Selectamark aluminium stencils with our name and postcode, they look nice and blend in with the Mac aesthetic - I was nervous at first but I can't recommend them enough as a possible deterrent. We marked every surface as the bezel is easily removed. (I'm in no way affiliated with selectamark lol) But every cloud has a silver lining, do you have insurance!?
  16. iLife is separate from the OS. You do not need to purchase new iLife licences unless upgrading to a later version of iPhoto, Garageband or iMovie. If your 10.6 Macs came with iLife 09 then you are licensed for iLife 09 for those machines, if you want 11 you need to pay to upgrade for each Mac on 09. Your 10.7 Macs if new will include iLife 11, the only issue that may occur if you don't upgrade the 10.6 clients to match the iLife version on the 10.7 clients is projects may not open in an older version. We run iLife 09 just fine on Macs upgraded to 10.7. iLife 11 has some cool new features, but unfortunately a lot of bloat IMO, but it gets better with every update.
  17. We upgraded our 10.6 clients to 10.7 using the app store package pushed out through ARD. All the computer policies set in WGM apply as normal - I manually added each one to WGM whilst on 10.6. When we upgraded to 10.7 they remained and so did the policies (after re-boot). I haven't tried removing a Mac from WGM and re-adding as a clean lion install, I have one that needs a replacement HDD so I will remove this and re-add as a test after our half-term and report back, I was planning on building a new image anyway. In all honesty I haven't experienced software update through the server on our 10.7 Macs, I've always downloaded the pkgs and pushed them through ARD (don't ask, the mac clients were a mess when I took over my current position, nothing was set up correctly, they didn't even have computer groups!) Just to add I would be hesitant to install 10.7.3 through software update at the moment as people have been experiencing problems as opposed to the combo update. ( I imagine this has been sorted now )
  18. Hi this is my first post on this site, I lurk a lot! Just wanted to confirm this works great for our School, I find the 10.7.2 clients take slightly longer to reach the desktop than 10.6 - but we're talking seconds. They also carry across all our preferences from 10.6.8 Server WGM - I personally don't see much point in upgrading server unless integrating lots of iOS devices. My main gripe is an aesthetic one, question marks in the docks on the 10.6 machines in place of launchpad and mission control. (I choose to manage docks by groups rather than Macs, and want to make sure launchpad stays in place, I'm not a fan but it's great for our less experienced users) - There's easy fixes for this but there is always something more important to do! The only issues I've seen are keychain errors related to iCloud, but these are rare, like the odd 1 in 200 users and creating a new keychain is an easy fix.
