Just wondered if you had and thoughts on how to get around this.

None of our teaching machines or pupil machines have dvd drives. This morning I have been handed a DVD that they want putting on the system its of a trip. However the dvd is in propper dvd format?? if i open it up theres an Audio_ts and a Video_ts. How would you go about putting this on a shared area so that the teachers can view it in windows media player?#

TIA

Do you have virtual DVD drives on your network computers? You could get an iso image of the DVD and then the teachers can mount it when they need to, to the virtual drive?

Your other option would be to shove it in a DVD Drive on a server temporarily and share this drive out, that way they should be able to access the DVD drive. Not sure how it would cope with multiple access.

Your only other option would be to rip the DVD to a network share so that they can watch it from that instead.

Use a DVD ripper like Handbrake (many others are available), though IIRC the files in the video folder may well just play (I think they're MPEGs) - so if there is just one that may be easier.

OTH, you may be opening yourself up to a world of pain when they start asking you to put their DVD of Happy Feet 2 etc on the system.

Legally: you wouldn't. You are only allowed to play the content from the disc itself unless explicitly licensed to otherwise from the copyright holder.

Good luck explaining copyright to teachers though... a lot of them seem to think "but I want to" overrides any objections to anything!

The only reason I suggested ripping it (just to clarify as I can feel like a copyright nazi here at times) is because it's of a trip which I assumed they meant a school trip, so they would probably be a lot better off this way, instead of doing it for something like Happy Feet 2 .. lol .. :)

Thats how I read it as a personally created DVD - I do not advocate piracy (although sometimes the law is an ass)

VLC will play from the Video_TS folder btw, if you've that installed :-)

But then you come into the issues that VLC is a violation itself for some of the decoders (unless that has changed recently) lol .. see .. copyright nazi .. *salutes*

Actually, as VLC is very modular, you can just remove the offending components dlls on install ...

1. What about windows media home cinema ( Media Player Classic - Home Cinema - Video Player ) with regards to codecs etc that can playback dvd's etc ? Is this also not legitimate ?

2. As far as I was aware if it is only a dvd of a school trip and it does not have any encryption on it then format shifting this is not illegal as you are not breaking any encryption like you would for an actual movie ie happy feet 2 or otherwise so there is no copyright to be broken etc

3. I would use handbrake or another util to extract the video_ts folder and put this somewhere for to play said video_ts or video footage

4. Make said staff aware that you only do this for none copyrighted dvd's / blu ray etc

Cheers fokes.

Is there a way of doing something on the server to make all the client machines open up a .vob open up in media player.

TIA

Ah, my brain somehow mangled that to be "for a trip" so I thought they wanted 4 copies of Harry Potter to watch elsewhere when on the trip, not that it was a DVD of the trip... in which case, all is fine :) and +1 for Handbrake being dead simple.

Buy a cheap DVD player which can be used instead of a computer? Let them make as many copies as they want and pass them to each teacher. So long as it's their own videos copyright shouldn't be a problem. Edited by penfold

I'm pretty sure that you can just rename the extension of the .vob files in the ts_video folder to .mpeg as thats all they are i think. Im sure the AV Tech here did it for a DVD of a some school dance competion. Then you could just drop it into a shared folder and create a shortcut to it? Not sure how well it works but will ask him to confirm it when he's back in the office.

Hi

If you want to save space on your file server, which in a school is always handy. I would suggest sharing a folder called something like "media" mapping a drive for all teachers. The on your machine download Any Video Converter (free) and convert the files to AVI using an xvid codec (part of the AVC install) with original frame sets. Then copy this to the media folder and setup permissions so that they can only read it. This will save you lots of space without losing the quality.

Hope this helps.
