Server name idea's

I prefer to use boring names like (SCHOOLNAME)-DC01 for the first domain controller, (SCHOOLNAME)-EX01 for the first exchange server (SCHOOLNAME)-FS01, for the first file server etc etc.

 

There is nothing worse than going to a clients site and having to remember which aircraft or bird of prey you need to log on to in order to perform a task.

 

It also make more sense to new techies or a new NM if you decide to leave the school.

We call our servers after their function. Although my home network is made up of safari animals. PC's with names like zebra and giraffe...

Bit geeky but how about after famous computer scientists?

 

Babbage, Turing, Rivest, Shamir, Adleman, Dijkstra, Hellman, Diffie, Merkle, Knuth, von Neumann, Shannon, Hamming, and one especially for all the lady geeks: Lovelace;

Whenever I'm doing development work, I tend name things after the Discworld characters or places. Example, I had a domain called Unseen, the servers and workstations were named after the wizards

 

Of course, production servers had more practical names such as appsrv, filesrv, terminalserver etc.

O dear, when i put 2 new DC's in i called one Titanic and the other Olympic, if i had enough cash for a 3rd it would have been Britannic. Titanic has not gone down yet. But then again she's not even a month old.

We had a testing box called Jane. I forget why it was called jane, i think we found a machine and it as called jane so it stayed jane from there on in.

 

The problem is the innuendo that can come from it.

 

"Jane's gone down again"

"Turn jane on"

 

A suggestion for a new server was that it got called Jenna Jaimeson. That didn't happen of course. Functional names are what i prefer for production servers. But for my home boxes my LAMP server is called lampy, my 2U rackmount is called behemoth and the old RM box is called frankenbox

I would go functional - in school anyway! - as it will make it easier for other people who might come in and use the network. Also remember that the print server name is visible in MS Word, so don't call your server anything which you wouldn't want staff and students to see (although I do like the vomit synonyms which Plexar suggests!).

 

Our server name was thrust on us by RM with no consultation with me, and it bugs me no end - SJC-SR-001 is just daft! I can see where they're coming from, but the name is just too long and when am I likely to have more than 99 servers to merit the 3-digit numbering?!?! SJC1 would seem to have sufficed, or maybe with one letter to denote function, e.g. SJCE1 for an email server.

 

I used to work in a place where they were named after key IT people, as Lee suggested, but it was a nightmare as we couldn't spell some of the weirder ones!
