I took mine with me two years ago, no problems as a visitor. Taking my 30D and the 10-20 down to get some shots of our stand too - should be fine as an exhibitor too.

Server cleanup is going well, that f-secure thing did the trick. Need to work out what we're going to do site wide now. Making sure sophos is set up properly on the servers with full on-access scanning set up. Going to work out a way to run that app on login and we'll just log everything in (quicker than re-imaging - just). Maybe re-image the registration machines that will need a sims update on them anyway.

Thanks again mate. Problem we've got is the Sims share and apps share are mapped for all staff. We're trying to nail it down but from looking at the Sophos log (something I don't do enough), its showing infections on the sims server from 14/5/08 - the infected files are in the setups folder and it was the night I was trying to do the sims may update (before it was pulled) after it had already failed for our sims administrator due to a signature mis-match. The signature didn't match because it was infected with a virus evidently. The may update didn't get pulled because it was infected with a virus did it? I presume now that the infected machine is a registration workstation and that the may update has now infected all registration machines if not all classroom machines. We're going to be pulling a late one. Basically disconnecting everything at 3pm, clean the servers, make sure sophos is activated fully on them, start working through the 900 workstations we have and go from there. I really can't believe this has happened.

Bugger. I really had hoped it was a false positive. Recieved this back from Sophos. First time I've had a virus infection on the network in five years. Gutted. Guess I'd better not put the overtime sheets in just yet.

Right, chosen a random exe on the apps server and done an on-demand scan on there. Its infected "apparently". Modified date of 20/07/2007 Surely if it was infected by this virus it would have changed the modified date?

Its possible, but its detectable by sophos, on-access scanning was turned on which is how its caught it, if the virus infects exes by sitting in memory all of the infected exes would have had to have been run to be infected - theres too many apps that just haven't been used for eons for that to have happened. Still looking into it...

ARGH! Good job I updated the policy to not delete, I have over 800 alerts on my apps server showing this virus as having infected every exe going. wtf is going on?! A phonecall to sophos is required methinks.

I'm not sure if its a false positive or whether something has infected the sims directory this morning but we've had the setups directory completely annilihated by Sophos on access scanning. Was detecting W32/Parite-B Win32 executable file virus (W32.Pinfi, W32/Pate-B, PE_PARITE.A, W32/Pate.b, W95/Parite.B, Win32.Parite.b) - Sophos security analysis All over the place. It couldn't clean the files and I've got it set to delete uncleanable files (as they're generally purely virus exes - obviously not in this case) Am restoring from tape now but wanted to make anyone else aware. I'm sure its a false positive which makes it even scarier. Stupid Sophos. I've changed my policies now to "do nothing" if unable to clean the files Matt

I think the initial schools are due to open sometime next year. The handover is June for the Buildings and sometime in July for Networks with a start up in September I think, so we should know a lot more by this time next year.

I work in a secondary school in Bradford which is in phase 2 of BSF. We were in phase 5 but lucky us were moved to phase 2, apparently building work is starting sometime next year and we'll be fully up and running in 2009/10. Just over 2000 students, currently around 900 workstations (including staff/admin ones). Just migrated to Windows 2003/Windows XP from a Netware/Windows 2000 scenario over the Summer which was rather good fun. Currently 5 of us in the team, my boss who deals with sims and some of the websites and school admin type stuff, me, network manager who deals with servers, network infrastructure and probably 3rd line tech support, two other people who are considered network technicians, do helpdesk and various jobs. Anything they can't handle gets escalated to me and another guy who provides primary schools with a managed support service. I'm rather concerned, have been since I first heard about BSF nearly 2 years ago now. Its my understanding that if I get TUPEd across my terms and conditions are kept intact - as in, I might be doing the same job as one of my technicians is at the moment but my pay will remain the same? Its just something else to worry about if I'm honest, I'm not happy with the provider, what we have is going to be replaced with Sun kit and thin clients. Teachers have a habit of purchasing software and it landing on my desk with a note to "please install asap" - that'll stop. I take pride in what I do, real pride and I'm really proud of what we've managed to achieve here over the last 4 years. I'm just worried that its all going to come crashing down around us and we'll get left with a service that is sub standard to what we're used to. (Plus theres a hint of self preservation in there )

I was doing it using Netware 5 at the time Group Policy wasn't nearly as advanced as it is now. Thanks for that though, I'll write that down somewhere.

The biggest problem I had when I tried to do this (a few years ago mind you) was that the kids soon cottoned on to the problem and figured out if they renamed their exe to winword.exe they could run anything they wanted to. One of the sixth formers coded me something in VB that had a database of exe names and their filesize which stopped that but it was a pain in the backside to run and look after. We're rebuilding the network here at the moment, we have a massive problem with flash games, some of the kids have even embedded them/downloaded them as excel files. sonic1.xls was the original name, basically the original sonic the hedgehog game in flash but protected by the xls filename. Produced a fairly large xls file though iirc. We've bought disknet which will scan usb sticks (and anything else you can plug into the pc for that matter), users can initiate a scan (if you let them) and any filetypes you disallow have to be deleted before the stick can be accessed. Should be great fun come September

Hi guys, My name is Matt (no way!) and I'm 26. Currently working at Hanson School in Bradford as their Network Manager - been here for almost 4 years now. We're just in the process of a rather large network migration where we're moving from two seperate windows 2003/netware (sob) networks to a single windows 2003 mega network. I've worked in education ICT support since leaving school at 18 - Dixons CTC (as it was then) employed me for a year as an ICT techie before I moved on to Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College, had a 6 month stint at Provident Financial in an attempt to see how things worked in the private sector, went back to Yorkshire Martyrs for a couple of years after being headhunted and now I'm at Hanson. In terms of certifcation, Im A+ and N+, keep looking at the MCSE but now MS have said its on its way out I don't know whether to bother going down that track or waiting for the new one to come about. Skillsets, like I'm sure is the same with most of you - know bits about lots and lots about bits. I look forward to being able to get help on things I get stuck with as well as hopefully lending a hand to people who are stuck with problems I've come across before/know something about. Didn't know this place existed until the reg story was posted up re sophos, glad I've found it. Matt
