Firefox 10 is out! This version also happens to be the first of the ESRs. :)

Firefox 10 will also be the first version under Mozilla’s Extended Support Release (ESR) programme. ESR evolved from feedback Mozilla received from exasperated administrators and corporate IT managers, who were growing increasingly frustrated at the six-week browser update cycle that Mozilla switched to last year. Under ESR, essential security updates are pushed to the browser, but full version updates will only come once a year or so. (Source)

This shouldn't be a problem now...

I agree that it was really annoying and one of the many reasons I switched to Chrome. :)

I have installed Firefox 10 on my PC but I don't expect i'l use it, I have been using Chrome for over 12 months now and find it's the best. I also have IE9 but that don't get used.

It's difficult as I've been with FF since the year dot. But it's getting daft the amount of resources it eats. Now using Chrome.......[ for my slower kit !! ]

Bring back Netscape...

Bring back Netscape...

I was trying to think of the other browsers name along side IE in the old days, good old netscape :D

258MB with 6 tabs, one of them Flash video via 4OD (Time Team if you're interested!)

Still I have 16GB, can't really moan about the memory footprint!

They released a new version again!!

Like Firefox, Chrome is on a six week release schedule. It is interesting that people complain about how many updates there are to Firefox, yet don't mind Chrome which is updated just as often. Is it due to the fact that you don't notice the updates with Google's browser?

Me too. It seems Google has benefited greatly from starting with a clean slate and making better decisions when initially designing Chrome 4-5 years ago. I don't think Mozilla could have imagined what PCs and the web would be like today way back in 2002.

Perhaps Mozilla should use some of the $900 million they received from Google and either hire better developers or start again and create a brand new browser (this time without using any of the old Netscape code and with Group Policy support built-in)?

But it's getting daft the amount of resources it eats.

Chrome can get a bit out of control if you leave it running for a few days...

^ That's with just 60 tabs. I think it's time I need to upgrade my home PC to 32GB RAM! :D

Chrome does its updates silently, and for the most part, nobody notices unless it is a massive change.

By v13, we should have silent updates for Firefox (way overdue IMO). Perhaps Mozilla should also add some Courgette too?

Firefox just bang out minuscule updates and call it a new release

It depends on how you define minuscule, but Firefox 10 has over 1,400 bugs fixed since the last release if you check out the full changelog linked above. By most people's definition, that is quite a lot.

If you look at the new features added to Chrome in each release, you may notice some versions have hardly any. e.g. v11.0 added support for the HTML5 Speech Input API and an updated icon. That's it!

Do you not remember having to code for Netscape 4.x's box model? /shudder

Between that and IE 4/5/5.5, they were dark days for web development.

I'm too entrenched with FF as well I fear :( been using it since it was Phoenix back at version 0.6 I think, anything else just feels unnatural to me. But gods, how I wish I could shrink that memory footprint.

Still on Firefox, have been since version 1.0 or so. I just prefer it, its add-ons, and the feel of it. The memory footprint is huge (and that doesn't include the plug-ins process!) but I have plenty of RAM.

With HTML5 can we go back to basic browsers without all the c*** thrown in (i.e. mr Flash, Shockwave etc.), just a basic program to translate the html pages :-) . Just the ability to view web pages, save bookmarks/favourites etc.

Since June las year we have gone from version 4 of firefox to now version 10.

Anyone had any luck with Safari, Chrome (or any other web browsers) on an active directory? bearing in mind they need to be locked down so students can't change the proxy settings.

We could have more HTML5 sites and dump Flash now, but businesses don't want to. Flash only on YouTube videos with ads or forcing people to pay extra to use HTML5 on Escapist Magazine seems to be their preferred route.

In other news... *Prods @PhilNeal and his SLG team towards FF10 ESR compatability* ;)
